Inaddition,policydevelopmentisnotalinear(stepbystep)processandyoumayneedtomakesome adjustmentstothepolicydevelopmentprocesstosuityourneeds.Forexample,ifyoumayalreadyhave policyoptionsdevelopedandarereadytobuildsupportforthepolicy,youmaystartbyreviewingStep4 or5ofthepolicydevelopmentprocess.Moreover,itisadvisedthatyouworkwithappropriate stakeholderswhenmovingforwardonpolicies. Publicpolicyisthebroadframeworkofideasandvalueswithinwhich decisionsaretakenandaction,orinaction,ispursuedbygovernmentsin relationtosomeissueorproblem.Brieflystated,publicpolicyisachoiceor 6decisionmadebygovernmentthatguidessubsequentactionsinsimilar circumstances.Brooks,1989 TheRoleofHealthyPublicPoliciesandCommunityPartnershipinCreatingHealthierCommunities Policydevelopmentisawellplanneddecisionmakingprocessthatseekstoaddresscertainobjectivesor concernsforthepublicgood.Goodpolicyisinformedbyevidenceandbringsaboutanimportantchange throughavarietyofpolicytools(e.g.legislation,regulation,bylaws,andorganizationalpolicies).Asnoted intheOttawaCharterforHealthPromotion,healthpromotionpolicymustmakehealthychoiceseasier. Ideally,healthpromotionpolicydecisionmakersweighthevariouspolicyoptionsandchoosethemost appropriatepolicy.Iftherightpolicyischosenandimplementedwell,itcanleadtohealthierindividuals andcommunities. Healthypublicpoliciescanleadtoahealthiercommunityinmanyways.Thisincludesaddressingchronic diseaseriskfactorsandsocialdeterminantsthatnegativelyimpactacommunityshealth. Healthypublicpolicyischaracterizedbyanexplicitconcernforhealthand equityinallareasofpolicyandbyaccountabilityforhealthimpact.The mainaimofhealthpublicpolicyistocreateasupportiveenvironmentto enablepeopletoleadhealthylives.Suchapolicymakeshealthchoices possibleoreasierforcitizens.Itmakessocialandphysicalenvironments healthenhancing.WHO,1988 Apolicycancreateorenhanceanenvironmentthatpromotesgoodmentalhealth,addressessafety,and supportshealthybehaviourssuchasphysicalactivityandhealthyeating.Itcanalsodiscourageunhealthy behaviourssuchassmokingandexcessivealcoholconsumption.Therefore,healthypublicpoliciescan increasetheavailabilityofandaccessibilitytohealthylivingconditionsforcommunitymembers,leadingto abetterqualityoflifeforall.
