Topic: In many countries, more and more young people are leaving school but unable to find jobs. What problems do you think youth employment causes for individuals and the society? What measures should be taken to reduce the level of unemployment among youngsters?

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the rate of youth unemployment in the UK in 2011 has risen to over a million, the highest figure since 1996. A very similar trend has also been observed in underdeveloped countries like India or Senegal. Therefore, in order to understand more , we will start by outlining what are the main obstacles young people face when trying to access the job market as well as it causes. We will then follow and analyze how this negative phenomenon impacts on both individual and society levels and finally what solutions can be suggested to tackle this problem.

When talking about employment, one automatically recalls two main factors: education and experience. Business firms and government entities use these two elements when selecting candidates for potential job openings. Many young people who apply for jobs do not have sufficient work experience to respond to the job requirements and so, an experienced individual is selected instead. If employers were willing to employ youngsters based on educational level they will be more likely to select people who have pursued higher education studies. Unfortunately, more and more people drop out of schools for many reasons. Furthermore, some countries do not have the required education resources available or young

people are not able to fund the cost of tuition fees. In underdeveloped countries young people are sometimes required to work at very low wages salary in order to support their family. Another cause to youth employment is the lack of entry level positions proposed by business firms as these are costly and time consuming.

Youth unemployment has negative impact on both individual and society levels. On an individual level, a young person who isnt able to find a job will be discouraged and faced with lower chances to self-develop in his or her life. In many cases they will find themselves faced with financial problem and although some countries offer social allowances to cover for daily basic needs, the will find themselves living in very poor conditions. Unemployment can also lead to depression and health problem. On a society level, youth unemployment or unemployment in general has a very negative effect on the economic development of a country. Not only because active people are funding for these social allowances but also, there is a workforce which isnt being exploited. Labor is crucial to the development of any business firm and country. People are considered as one of the factors of production and without them business firms will find it difficult to respond to the countries economical needs.

In order to tackle this negative effect, governments should get more involved and create regulations that would encourage business firms to invest further in recruiting young jobless people. In terms of education, imposing mandatory education up to a certain age would also encourage young people to stay in schools or university and leave with a certificate which would open doors the jobs market.
