President Obama promised to restore the international image of the United States, but the recent NATO airstrike that killed Pakistani soldiers comes as a historic setback, at least in Pakistan, to judge from remarks made by Army Gen. Martin. E. Dempsey to British media today.
Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that the average Pakistanis respect for the United States is lower than ever. [The average Pakistani who] doesnt know the United States, doesnt read about the United States or just watches something on television about the United States, at that level, [the relations] are probably the worst theyve ever been, he explained, according to the American Forces Press Service. He added that the relationship between the U.S. government and Pakistans government is on about as rocky a road as Ive seen. The general expressed limited optimism for rebuilding that relationship. I think if we understand the seriousness with which this event is being viewed in Pakistan, and they understand we are taking it seriously, then I think we will have at least the beginnings of a opportunity to find our way through it, he suggested.

I'm so conflicted. I hate the idea of supporting terrorism by continuing the "aide" to Pakistan, but they burned an effigy of Obama, so they can't be all bad...

They are not all that bad. Remember, Obama has been sending drones into their territory for many months now WITHOUT asking permission. That's invading another nation's sovereign territory. They're getting tired of Obama's careless attitude and are starting to fight back. How can you blame them?

In other news, my opinion of Pakistan is also at an all-time low. Every time they support or turn a blind eye to the very terrorism they are supposedly help us combat, they lose credibility. Don't harbor people such as Osama in your country (you are either with us, or against us). Don't allow terrorists (or whatever euphemism you choose) to launch attacks on our troops or allies from nearby your bases. Instead locate and eliminate them. Don't send money, supplies or any other type of support to said enemies. Pick a side and deal with the consequences of your actions.

In case you don't realize it, the Pakistan government has been fighting the Taliban far longer than we have. They have lost 10X the number of troops and civilians due to the Taliban. So it makes no sense for them to protect the Taliban. Think about it.
3 hours ago in reply to Man Cave Like Reply
Then they should simply work together with dignity and respect for each other and erradicate the Taliban with our superior forces while they are still there. Then we can solve the Taliban issue once and for all and come home.

ManCave raises a very good point. This is a society where the overwhelming population is illiterate, that lacks trustworthiness - remember where Bin Ladin was housed for so long and is essentially backward. This mistake would have happened under any other President's watch and is part of the risk that we take. We cannot win over an illiterate population that hates us but doesn't see who their real enemies are - a lot more Pakistanis have been killed by the Taliban/Al Qaeda than by U.S./NATO forces. And the former did so deliberately. Our choice is to walk away or live with this problem of identification...Think about that...

The real reason we have to stay engaged with Pakistan is the fact they have 0ver 50 nukes in pieces scattered around their country. This, in the least stable of all Islamic countries, should scare the living s#!t out of any thinking person.

Pakistan's problem is that they are more worried about not appearing to be a Western puppet, than they are in interdicting the terrorism that makes them an object of our interest ... that is, when they are not simply trying to get some geopolitical-level baksheesh from some deep-pocketed nations. Mr. Obama's problem is that he believes too much in humble talk, and not enough in decisively acting according to those self-evident truths this nation was founded upon ... he wants us to be liked, more than respected. And as a result of all of the above ... world peace, and our security, continues to erode.

The war on terror has always been about energy and nothing to do with terrorism, so your argument is not valid. Do your research rather then watching fox news/MSM. It's no coincidence that Cheney's Halliburton is the largest government contractor in this war.

Tell it to the people of New York troll wannabe. I guess your tinfoil hat blocked out all the images of the World Trade Center towers collapsing. Oh yeah the "blah blah no blood for oil blah blah blah" spin was old years ago. Better find a new wingnut talking point to regurgitate.

You said that this war is a war for oil It's greed at the point of a gun ... But I say if we wanted to take that oil We'd have stayed there in 1991 ... But I guess that you'll just have to deal with the fact It was returned to the people of Iraq Your protest, my friend, sounds much like breaking wind ... Your protest sounds much like breaking wind ... Put down the Kool-Aid, and stop blaming America first ...

Ritchie, can I suggest looking for a translated copy of the Pakistani constitution and reading it? It might explain just a whole lot to you if you then bone up a little more on Islam and its practices. {^_^}
9 hours ago in reply to Ritchie The Riveter Like Reply
I'll take up your suggestion, JBD (already read the Wikipedia synopsis)... but at least for now, I think that more than fanatical Islam is involved here; otherwise, they'd be exporting their nukes to their "brothers" already. My view is that there are many in Pakistan who want to stay in power peacefully, and are willing to dance with fanatical devils at arms' length, like a bashful kid at a junior-high dance to do so ... yet chafe at what they see as a return of Western dominance over their nation if they cooperate with us. Ironic, since their actions are a by-product of British influence in times past. Others there, have no problem with dancing closer to a devil ...

Why is the solution the U.S. must take Pakistan seriously and work to improve the relationship? Haven't the Pakis ever wondered why the last 3 or 4 military events with Paki deaths have happened inside Paikistan's borders?

So now they fess up that they started this, after raising all the stink and having their citizens go ape. Nothing more difficult that keeping a ignorant, primitive third-world ally with nuclear weapons acting like they are a modern nation.

US needs to take control of Paki nuclear weapons and then teach them a lesson about who and who not to consort with.

Notice that we downplayed the 2-3 of our guys that were killed coming out of a meeting with Paksitani soldiers several months ago...they were ambushed by the people they were meeting with, not some sort of "accident" but this is not mentioned in any of these stories for some reason.

Doesn't Pakistan know our great leader has a Nobel Peace Prize? Should we send Obama out again on another worldwide apology tour? Maybe we should just blame Bush instead.

I prefer the old days when the Western way to win the hearts and minds of medieval savages was at the point of the sword. It's sad that we must actually contort ourselves and our beliefs to accommodate these barbaric practitioners of a nilhilistic death cult because of geography. But then geography pretty much explains our relationship with all these tribal fiefdoms sharing the Religion of Perpetual Rage.

Obama, GET OVER TO PAKISTAN and APPOLOGIZE for our low image. (Gee! Some presidents just NEVER get it figured out.)

The Paki's image, as supporting the Taliban, who are killing our troops, is the worst it has ever been in the States. I think they have more to be concerned about how we feel about them than we have to be concerned about how they feel about us. This seems to be a situation that was instigated by the Taliban and and Taliban personnel that are infiltrated in the Pakistani armed forces, has been used by the Islamist Pakistani movement in concert with the Taliban, to gin up hatred against America and the NATO forces. This action was a power move by the Pakistaini Islamists against the more moderate festablishment forces that might not exist without American support.

Impossible, we elected Obama because HE SAID he was going to repair America's image around the world. Frankly, seems that our image was OK and Obama was trying to fix something that wasn't broke. Or am I mistaken.

I simply don't understand. Our great Islam-loving presidunce has done everything but lay face down in front of the various Islamic dictators, in submission ... yet he is still burned in efigy as a traitor - a puppet of the Infidels. Has he not sent enough of our $billions? What more do they want of this poor inept person?

Worst ever? Really? How about when, in 1979, a mob formed by the ISI burned the US embassy in Islamabad to the ground. Let's keep the current fracas in perspective.

Then he also warned you why the occupiers need to be confronted by the people and disbanded. Many claiming to be "conservative" called such testimony "shameful"...... Well here's to hoping those same pu$$ies now enjoy rampant disease coming to a neighborhood near them and here's to hoping their relatives contract it. AND the violence they'll also be bringing with them..... And by the way, enjoy the dictatorship. You were told that this imparting of wisdom would come to an end and the time has come. Reap what you have sown. So it is said, so it is written.
