A dessecularizao do mundo: uma viso global Peter Berger

Neste texto, que serve de introduo a uma coletnea recentemente publicada nos Estados Unidos, Berger reavalia a tese da secularizao da qual foi um dos principais propositores. Segundo o autor, os processos de secularizao vieram acompanhados de movimentos de contra-secularizao, e o mais indicado seria analisar a relao entre eles. Dentre os ressurgimentos religiosos recentes, d-se destaque ao islamismo e ao protestantismo, explorando semelhanas e diferenas. Especula-se ainda sobre as causas e prospectos da ressurgncia religiosa. O autor conclui procurando relacionar a atual efervescncia religiosa com assuntos tais como os conflitos mundiais, desenvolvimento econmico e direitos humanos.

In this paper, which is an introduction to a collection recently published in the USA, Berger takes a second look at the theory of desecularization of which he was one of the founders. The secularization processes came together with counter-secularization movements, and the best fit is to evaluate the relation between both tendencies. Evangelical, and the author shows similarities and differences between them. He also discusses the causes and prospects of the religious resurgence, and ends by attempting to relate the present religious revival with themes such as world conflicts, economic development and human rights.

Resumo: Secularizao e dessecularizao: comentrios a um texto de Peter Berger Ceclia Mariz

Este artigo comenta o texto Dessecularizao do mundo: uma viso global de Peter Berger. Argumenta que, apesar do ttulo e de algumas afirmativas contundentes, o autor no desmente totalmente a teoria da secularizao, mas apenas chama ateno para o fato de que a secularizao tem por vezes gerado o seu oposto. Nesse texto, Berger d continuidade a muitas idias desenvolvidas em trabalhos anteriores, especialmente no seu livro The Homeless Mind. Claramente direcionado a um pblico no acadmico, o texto comentado evita elaborao de conceitos e discusso com a literatura. Sendo propositadamente breve, apresenta certas lacunas. No entanto, oferece insights interessantes para o estudo da religio no mundo contemporneo, dentre esses se destaca a hiptese que relaciona surtos fundamentalistas a um processo de guerra cultural.

Abstract: Secularization and desecularization: comments on a Bergers text Ceclia Mariz

The article comments on The Desecularization of the World: A Global Overview, by Peter Berger. In spite of its title and in spite of some cutting arguments, the author does not deny completely the theory of secularization, but only underlines that secularization has sometimes produced its opposite. Berger follows many ideas previously developed in his works, specially in his book The Homeless Mind. Bergers article is clearly addressed to non-scholar readers and it avoids elaboration of concepts and to discuss on literature. Being intentionally short, it shows some gaps, but has interesting insights concerning the state of religion in the contemporary world, such as a possible relation between fundamentalists explosions and a process of cultural war.

Resumo: Novos paradigmas e estudo da religio: uma reflexo anti-essencialista Joanildo Burity
Nos ltimos anos os cientistas sociais da religio tm se debatido entre a questo do retorno do sagrado ou de sua radical secularizao. Se o que temos um ou outro processo e quais as consequncias disso. Isto no pode ser respondido sem que se lance um novo olhar sobre a religio. Um olhar que d ateno lgica interna dos grupos e ao carter disseminativo de elementos imaginrios e ticos de cunho religioso atravs do cenrio social. preciso questionar os enfoques integracionistas e classistas, bem como o seu paradigma mais amplo a teoria da modernizao e da secularizao. Um novo olhar que no simplesmente abandone ou substitua estas teorias, mas que se coloque nas margens, ora em confronto ora articulando verses modificadas destas vises mais tradicionais, suplementando-as de forma a no deix-las intocadas. Tratase de um enfoque inter- ou talvez ps-disciplinar, que explora as fronteiras das narrativas dominantes, definindo assim novos e velhos praticantes, zonas hbridas entre a secularizao e as teorias da diferena e do multiculturalismo. Este artigo discute a emergncia de novos paradigmas no estudo da religio contempornea, num dilogo entre a experincia brasileira e o background mais amplo de anlises acadmicas feitas em outros contextos sociais.

Abstract: New paradigms and the study of religion: an anti-essencialist reflection Joanildo Burity
Over the last few years, there has been a heated debate among social scientists of religion whether we are going through a return of the sacred or an even deeper process of secularization. But this dilemma cannot be approached properly without a new gaze into religion, that may give more room to the internal logic of groups and to the disseminative character of religious-based imaginary and ethical elements across the social scenario. One must question integrationist and class-centred views, as well as their more encompassing paradigm modernization and secularization theory. A new gaze that will not simply abandon or replace those theories, but will place itself at the margins, sometimes confronting, sometimes articulating modified versions of those more traditional views, so as to supplement them and not leave them untouched. It is a question of an inter- or perhaps post-disciplinary approach, that explores the frontiers of dominant narratives, thus defining new and old practitioners of the academic study of religion, hybrid zones between secularization and the theories of difference and multiculturalism, for example. This article discusses the emergence of new paradigms in the study of contemporary religion, through a dialogue between the recent Brazilian experience and the broader background of analyses produced in other social contexts.

Resumo: Da boa e da m vontade para com a religio nos cientistas sociais da religio brasileiros Marcelo Camura
O artigo busca fazer um comentrio geral do balano realizado por Antnio Flvio Pierucci sobre a literatura acadmica das cincias sociais da religio nos ltimos 25 anos, publicado na srie O que ler na Cincia Social Brasileira (1970-1995) da ANPOCS. Ao apresentar a argumentao central do autor a qual pode ser resumida na sua crtica ao que considera os interesses religiosos dos cientistas sociais da religio, que torna esta rea de estudos impuramente acadmica o artigo passa a problematizar esta perspectiva como via principal para o entendimento das questes do campo. Por fim, o artigo traz baila conceitos de Pierre Bourdieu autor de referncia para Pierucci fundamentar seu argumento no sentido de relativizar a centralidade dos ditos interesses religiosos, que podem ser ampliados para interesses em geral, inclusive anti-religiosos.

Abstract: On good and ill will regarding religion among Brazilian social scientists of religion Marcelo Camura
The article aims to comment on an evaluation elaborated by Antnio Flvio Pierucci about the references on religious studies, published by ANPOCS in the collection What to read in Brazilian Social Sciences (1970-1995). Pieruccis central argument can be summarised in his criticism of what he considers to be the religious interests of social scientists. The article asks if this view is the more adequate way to understand the problems in the field of religious studies. It ends by reminding concepts by Pierre Bourdieu on which Pierucci bases his argument pointing that the centrality of the so-called religious interests should be relativised, and could be called interests in general, including anti-religious interests.

e tipologias institucionais. Esses textos esto divididos em dois blocos: o primeiro toma como referncia a marca de preocupaes religiosas; o segundo, a insero em discusses acadmicas. O objetivo demonstrar a existncia de certas continuidades entre esses dois conjuntos de elaboraes, estabelecidas em torno de critrios e frmulas de classificao do protestantismo. Ao final, o artigo procura explorar as implicaes e os problemas colocados por essas formas de classificao compartilhadas por religiosos e acadmicos.

Abstract: The will of the knowledge: terminologies and classifications on Brazilian Protestantism Emerson Giumbelli
The paper evaluates part of the existing bibliography on Protestantism in Brazil, including texts which develop discussions and suggestions on institutional terminologies and classifications. These texts are divided in two sections, the first one taking as reference religious interests and the second one an insertion in scholarly discussions. The aim is to demonstrate the existence of a certain continuity between both sets of arguments, around criteria and formulas of classification of Protestantism. The paper ends by attempting to explore the implications and problems put forward by these sorts of classifications shared both by the religious and the scholar.
