Chapter 1
Introduction to the project
1.1Basics of Projects:
The university website is the University`s Iront door` and oIten the Iirst point oI contact
Ior those looking Ior a range oI inIormation about the University.
A number oI student surveys cite the web as the most important inIormation tool Ior
students, particularly Ior national graduate and postgraduate students. Not only should the
web provide Iactual inIormation about the University, it should also provide a Ieel oI
what liIe is like at Leeds and bring our ambitions and level oI aspiration alive, through the
way inIormation is presented, how content is written and how new technologies are
innovatively used.
Our vision is to be amongst the top 50 world-class institutions by 2015 and our websites
should reIlect these aspirations. The improving our eIIectiveness (on the strategy map)
provides the strategic context Ior this project to create a website that has a purpose, which
reIlects our status and personality and to achieve consistency in our approach in
undertaking web development across the organization.
University websites have to deal with a large range oI visitors and a large amount oI
content. Because oI these two Iactors, the home page design needs to strike a delicate
balance oI Iunctionality and attraction: enough content to be interesting, but not too much
so that the visitor will be overwhelmed; a user-Iriendly layout that accommodates Iirst
time visitors and regular users alike. On top oI this, the home page (like that oI any
website) has to eIIiciently communicate the kind oI institution the university is (or would
like to appear to be). This in itselI is a tricky objective, as universities combine a range oI
roles (education, business, community, etc).
The home age is centered around the Hull's history through the dominant image oI the old
university building
2

!erhaps unsurprisingly, Harvard University is also is also keen to emphasis its traditional
reputation and the website secures this through its use oI the university's colours in the
design. Interestingly enough the design choices oI the home pages oI RTU and other
educational do not indicate a desire to base their appeal on tradition
The striking use oI a limited colour palette Ior LSE ensures visual impact, while the
prominence oI up-to-the-minute political news and debate make it seem highly relevant
and dynamic.
1.2 Understanding of Web:
1.2.1 Overview:
Are you new to Web design? Not sure how to update your Web site? Join your
peers in this introductory workshop that explains the Web design process at State and
contains useIul tips to guide you as you create and implement your Web pages. Topics
include: how browsers display Web pages, the Web guidelines and process at
Sacramento State, how to organize your Web site, ways to evaluate your Web site, and
resources available to you.
1.2.2 Prerequisites:
Individuals taking this workshop should have basic computer skills, knowledge
oI the Web, basic Web browser skills, and the ability to eIIectively work in the
windows or OS environments.

1.2.3 Understanding the World Wide Web (WWW):

3

The Internet is a collection oI computers around the world connected to each
other via a high-speed series oI networks. The World Wide Web or 0- consists
oI a vast assortment oI Iiles and documents that are stored on these computers and
written in some Iorm oI Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) that tells browsers
how to display the inIormation The computers that store the Iiles are called servers
because they can serve requests Irom many users at the same time. Users access these
HTML Iiles and documents via applications called browsers

(Fig 1.1 World wide web)
The Language of the Web: HTML
HTML, or Hypertext Markup Language, is the authoring language that describes how
a Web page should be displayed by a Web browser. It has two essential Ieatures:
hypertext and universality. Hypertext means when a visitor clicks a link on a Web
page, the visitor is led to another Web page or document. Universality means that
because HTML documents are saved as text Iiles, virtually any computer can read a
Web page.1 For increased accessibility to your Web pages, we recommend using
XHTML (extensible Hypertext Markup Language) when creating your Web pages.

The Aim oI University website is to provide suitable the registration Iacility to its
member who is going to register Ior the diIIerent categories.
Member are required to Registered by Iilling a Iorm which contains the various
inIormation regarding to the categories like Member Detail & its Family Detail,
and in diIIerent Service classes.
Individual member is given a unique identiIication number conventionally knows
Registration number. In Iurther Ior communication with the University this
reIerence oI the registration number will act as key Ior the candidate and the
establishment as well.
It is also required that search Iacility provided by the University must be reliable
accurate and eIIicience.

4.4 Disadvantages of the Projects:
1. In this university site we want to store the result oI all the semester or yearly exam so
load are very high because oI large database which are use in the university.
2. II internet connection is Iast all users are accessible easily otherwise not.
3. iI Load is high then result display is taken long time.

21

Conclusion and Future work

The website is just one oI the university communication channels between many areas.
