Thermodynamics (science of energy)

1st Law of Thermodynamics (Chapter 2) Increase in internal energy of a system = heat supplied to the system - work done by the system 2nd Law of Thermodynamics (Chapter 5) Entropy of an isolated system never decreases

Description of the systems

Macroscopic Thermodynamics - Gross or overall behavior Microscopic Thermodynamics - Also known as statistical thermodynamics - Understand the structure of the matter and relate to macro-view Property - Macroscopic characteristics; mass, volume, energy, pressure, temperature State -condition of systems as described by its properties Process - Property change-> state change-> called process

16

Extensive & Intensive Properties

Extensive value for overall system is the sum of its values for parts function of time Intensive non-additive; independent property; function of position and time

Mass = sum of cubes Volume = sum of cubes Temp sum of cubes

17

Equilibrium
States : condition of a system described by its properties Equilibrium : a state of balance; Thermodynamic equilibrium : no change in properties in isolated system Ein F2
