Fellow members of the American Association: In the spirit of encouraging all of us in Christian service to all who need us and

d in keeping with the Boards commitment to providing more timely information we present the first quarterly issue of Hospitaller. This newsletter is designed to encourage and inspire you by highlighting the multitude of ways our members are defending the faith and serving our fellow man. We will also be recognizing members for their commitment and leadership and reporting on actions taken by the Board. In this issue, you will read about The St. Anthony Wellness Center, an innovative collaboration between the Order of Malta and the Order of Friars Minor, and the expansion of the Chapin Street Clinic. Both of these initiatives are great examples of caring for the sick and the poor. You will also read about The Church in the 21st Century, an outstanding approach to giving us the knowledge we need to defend our faith during difficult times. I am inspired by these stories and hope that you are too. But I know these stories dont begin to capture the breadth and depth of the Orders activities. To do that, we need your help. Please let us know about your activities and the activities of other members in your area. You can send stories and ideas for stories to our Executive Director, John Shine. Best regards, Daniel J. Kelly, K.M. President

Health and Healing Ministry Opens in Boston

The elderly, the lonely, the prosperous, the homeless, the immigrant . . . all are guests at St. Anthonys Wellness Center in Bostons Downtown Crossing. The center, which opened its doors on October 7, 2003, is a collaborative effort between members in the Boston Area Order of Malta and the Franciscan Community at St. Anthonys Shrine. Based on a holistic Franciscan philosophy of healthy, body, mind and spirit, the center is an outreach into the community. It offers tangible health services such as screening for blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol at no charge. In addition, we provide an open ear for the lonely, the marginal and the troubled, says Lynn Finn, RN, DM, Nursing Coordinator for the center. As access to affordable healthcare becomes more limited and physicians find themselves more rushed with their patients, the Wellness Center hopes to fill the gap by providing education, referral, affirmation, empowerment and compassionate listening, says Mrs. Finn. Many times, the nurses call physicians or make referrals for seniors with abnormal screening results. Other times, they help the homeless find shelter or pregnant and battered women find medical care. Still other times, they simply listen to business professionals who need to check their blood pressure and voice their anxieties. Since October, the center has provided more than 1,000 screenings and referred dozens to medical, psychiatric or homeless shelter care. In addition, the center has conducted health seminars on diabetes, arthritis, nutrition, stroke, heart attack, asthma and exercise for seniors. Mrs. Finn has been involved with the center since its inception, but she is quick to give credit for the concept to Fr. David Convertino, OFM, who started a similar center in Providence. Fr. Convertino, the Executive Director of the Shrine, is the visionary behind this ministry, she says.

Boston College Initiative Seeks to Restore Confidence in the Church

The Church in the 21st Century initiative launched by Boston College is designed to explore the issues emerging from the clerical sexual abuse crisis that has shaken the trust in the Catholic Church. The initiative provides a forum and the resources to help the Catholic community-- lay men and women, priests, and bishops-transform the current crisis into an opportunity for renewal. The Church in the 21st Century focuses on three major areas: Roles of lay men and women, priests and bishops Handing on the faith to the next generation Sexuality in the Catholic tradition and contemporary culture Project activities include conferences, public lectures, publications, video and audio streaming resources, reading lists, and programs for Boston College students, staff, faculty, alumni and the general public. To date, more than 20,000 people have attended various lectures and more than 40,000 have visited the website: www.bc.edu/ church21. It is important to note that the initiative is not intended to take the place of those in the Church ultimately responsible for resolving these issues Boston College is a highly selective, Jesuit, Catholic university enrolling 14,500 students in the arts and sciences, management, nursing, education, law, and social work. Founded in 1863, the University ranks 38th among national universities.

Boston Area Defends the Faith; Supports The Church in the 21st Century
Defense of the faith is one of the primary duties of the Order of Malta. By financially supporting an initiative called The Church in the 21st Century, the Boston Area knights and dames are doing just that. The initiative, launched by provide a forum to explore issues surrounding the sexual misconduct by Catholic clergy, particularly in the Archdiocese of Boston. The Boston Area is all too familiar with the sexual misconduct scandal, says Boston Area Chair James F. OConnor, KM Our Archdiocese has become ground zero for this crisis. By helping to bring resolution to the crisis, he continues, we can help restore the confidence of Catholics in the Church and revive their financial support for deserving agencies. Only a financially viable church can serve the sick and the poor.

To support the initiative, the Boston Area committed to raising $50,000 from its members. They raised $63,000, the largest grant for this initiative. The members of the committee raising the funds included: OConnor, John E. Joyce, KM, John H. MacKinnon, KM, Paul J. McNamara, KM, and Desmond D. McCarthy, KOB, Board of Councillors. In recognition of the grant, the Order of Malta will be listed as a major sponsor for the key events in September, 2004 including a three-day symposium on handing on the faith. In addition, every member of the American Association will receive materials published for the initiative, including a newspaper entitled, C21 Resources.

The Boston Area recently donated $63,000 to the Boston College initiative, The Church in the 21st Century. Pictured from left to right are: Dr. Robert Newton, Director of the initiative; James F. Malta Brings Smiles to Poor in South Bend

Many unemployed and working poor in South Bend, Ind. have a reason to smile. With the help of the Order of Malta, they can now obtain free dental care at the St Joseph Regional Medical Center on Chapin Street. Known as the Chapin Street Clinic, the Center recently received a $15,000-grant from the American Association. The funds helped equip the clinic which provides a full range of dental services, including extracting, filling and cleaning teeth and even fitting dentures for patients without medical insurance, Medicare or Medicaid. The clinic which serves nearly 500 dental patients each year is completely dependent upon volunteers. William Gitlin, DDS personally invites local dentists to volunteer and a partnership with Indiana University in South Bend encourages dental hygiene students to assist at the clinic. In addition, the clinic benefits from the time and talent of many Indiana Area Knights and Dames, including Michael Hammes, K.M., who led the effort to submit the grant application to the American Association and Marjorie Bycraft DM who has provided administrative support.
Malta representatives led by Indiana Area Chairperson and Association Board Member John Bycraft, present a $15,000 grant to the St. Joseph Medical Center for the new Chapin Street dental clinic. Pictured left to right are William Gitlin, DDS; Sister Maura Brannick, CSC; John Bycraft, KM; Marjorie Bycraft, DM; Michael Hammes, KM; Polly DeCicco, DM; Carla Bice, Clinical Director and Michael DeCicco, KM.

Chapin Street Clinic in Good Company

The Chapin Street Clinic is situated near two more Malta supported ministries in South Bend. Housed in the same strip mall is a Womens Care Center, one of their 10 crisis pregnancy centers in northern Indiana. Just two blocks away is the Christ Child Society which raises $180,000 each year to provide new winter clothing, shoes and layettes to more than 4,500 needy children.

This grant builds on a long-standing relationship with the St. Joseph Medical Center, says John Bycraft, KM, Indiana Area Chair. The Order of Malta provided two grants to help establish the medical clinic more than a decade ago. In addition, Dr. Leslie Bodnar, KM worked to make the clinic a reality and continues to volunteer his time and medical expertise. The medical clinic, which also receives more than 4,800 medical patient visits each year, was founded by Sr. Maura Brannick, CSC. The credit for this clinic rightly goes to Sister Maura, says Bycraft. She is the beloved leader, the glue that holds the clinic together.

Pat McCarthy Makes Promise of Obedience

Malta Members Celebrate with Grand Master Bertie

Investiture and Annual Dinner Slated for November

The Board of Councillors has moved the date for the Investiture and Annual Dinner from January to November. The new date is in response to our members, says Daniel Kelly, KM, President of the Association. Last November in an effort to increase participation in the events, Kelly appointed a committee chaired by John Bycraft to poll the membership regarding the timing and location of the Investiture and Annual Dinner.

On March 25, A. Patricia McCarthy made her Promise of Obedience at the Cathedral of St. Agnes in Rockville Centre before Fr James-Michael von Stroebel, Knight of Justice from the Federal Association, representing the Grand Master of the Order, Fr Andrew Bertie. McCarthy, a member of the Order since 1985, served as a member of the Board of Councillors from 1997 to 1999 and as the Area Chair in Nassau/ Suffolk, New York since 1999. McCarthys husband, Desmond, made his Promise of Obedience in the Lady Chapel at St. Patricks Cathedral, on December 8, 2001.

Grand Master Fr Andrew Bertie received an Honorary Doctorate from Saint Johns University in Collegeville, Minn. on Sunday, October12, 2003. Attending the ceremony were more than 40 Malta members representing 10 states, including Florida and California. In addition to attending the ceremony, the Malta members participated in a variety of specially planned events throughout the weekend, including Mass and Vespers in the magnificent church designed by Marcel Breuer, tours of the campus and the Malta Center, and dinner in the Great Hall. The Malta Center was all I imagined it would be and more, says Elaine Violyn Luzine of New York. Displays of books, clothing, maps, paintings and other artifacts were presented in special eyelevel cases. The bond between the college, the speakers, our Order, and those that founded the Malta Center was strongly felt by all. Luzine had the opportunity to meet His Highness, Fr Andrew Bertie. I found the conversation interesting, gracious and friendly, she says. That experience does not come to many, and we appreciated meeting this man of many talents. Luzine commends the Federal Association for arranging the cascade of events at Saint Johns University, and for including all.

Bycraft, along with committee members Fran Hardart and Tom Flood, crafted a brief survey and sent it to a representative sample of the members. Based on the survey responses, the committee recommended scheduling both events during warmer weather. More than one-third of the respondents favored a change in the time of year, says Bycraft. In addition, several written comments particularly from members who winter in warmer climates supported such a change. Kelly believes this change, along with the large number of candidates 1207 preparing for admission to the Order, will draw a significant number of members and guests to the Annual Dinner on November 12. It is the intention of the Board that these two events will be held during the month of November for the foreseeable future he says. Invitations and the Order of Events will mail in mid-September.

Promise of Obedience Marks Spiritual Growth

The Promise of Obedience, also known as the Second Class, is offered to members who desire to make an increased commitment to the spiritual life. The Second Class signifies the individuals strides toward spiritual development and at the same time recognizes his or her leadership whether spiritual, Hospitaller or administrative in the Order. A member who seeks admission to the Second Class must first receive approval from the Sovereign Council, upon recommendation from the President of the Association, to begin a year of preparation. During the year, which begins and ends with a five-day retreat, the candidate discerns the commitment under the guidance of a spiritual director. After the second retreat, the Sovereign Council again considers the candidate. Once approval is granted, the candidate publicly makes the Promise of Obedience during a formal ceremony.

Notre Dame Alumni Reunion

All Notre Dame alumni interested in a Malta gathering at the Notre Dame Reunion scheduled for June 3- 6, 2004 are asked to call Charles Carter, KM, member of the Federal Association at 202-362-7960.

The Beatitudes
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

The center, under the direction of Brother Alan Thomas, OFM, relies on a mostly volunteer staff. Funding comes in the form of grants from the Province of the Most Holy Name, (Franciscan Friars), the Order of Malta, (Boston area), as well as many generous contributions from private donors and organizations such as The Missionary Franciscan Sister of the Immaculate Conception, and Blue Cross/ Blue Shield of Mass. Many Boston Area dames and knights worked diligently to launch this ministry, says Mrs. Finn, and they continue to give generously of their time and talent. The Wellness Center has applied to the American Association of the Order of Malta for a grant for the upcoming year.

Prayer of the Order

Lord Jesus, Thou hast seen fit to enlist me for Thy service among the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem. I humbly entreat Thee through the intercession of the most holy virgin of Philermo, of saint John the Baptist, Blessed gerard and all the saints and blessed of our Order, to kee me faithful to the tradition of our Order. Be it mine to practice and defend the Catholic, the Apostolic, the roman faith against the enemies of religion; be it mine to practice charity towards my neighbors, especially the poor and sick, Give me the strength I need to carry out this my resolve, forgetful of myself, learning ever from The Holy Gospel a spirit of deep and generous christian devotion, striving ever to promote Gods glory, the worlds peace, and all that may benefit the Order of saint John of Jerusalem. Amen.
