LUKE 1:26-31 (NIV)
26
In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to
Nazareth, a town in Galilee,
27
to a virgin pledged to
be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant
of David. The virgins name was Mary.
28
The angel
went to her and said, Greengs, you who are
highly favored! The Lord is with you.
29
Mary was greatly troubled at his words and
wondered what kind of greeng this might be.
30
But the angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary,
you have found favor with God.
31
You will be with
child and give birth to a son, and you are to give
him the name Jesus.
11:00 a.m.
LUKE 1:26-31 (THE MESSAGE)
26-28
In the sixth month of Elizabeths pregnancy,
God sent the angel Gabriel to the Galilean village
of Nazareth to a virgin engaged to be married to a
man descended from David. His name was Joseph,
and the virgins name, Mary. Upon entering, Gabriel
greeted her: Good morning! Youre beauful with
Gods beauty, Beauful inside and out! God be
with you.
29-31
She was thoroughly shaken, wondering what
was behind a greeng like that. But the angel
assured her, Mary, you have nothing to fear. God
has a surprise for you: You will become pregnant
and give birth to a son and call his name Jesus.

Advent Meditation
THE NEARNESS OF GOD
Looking Outward
Does Advent call for an outward journey or an inward one? Dont answer too quickly! The inward
journey of reecon and soul searching is obvious, but there are also outward possibilies.
Magi, as they gazed upward, saw a promising star in the sky. Shepherds saw an angel, who
proclaimed good news. As we look for evidence of Gods nearness, are any visions open to us?
Some messages that come with outward vision are unnoced, because they seem commonplace.
But at mes a responding chord may sound in our hearts, as we hear the Psalmist say, The
heavens are telling the glory of God and the rmament shows Gods handiwork. (19:1) People
who do not aend worship in a Church somemes claim that they nd God in nature. This may
be only an excuse, but there is some truth in it. The gentle ight of a buery, the soaring of
an eagle, the intricacy of a ower petal, and the agetelling rings of a tree stump all point to a
wisdom and beauty that have their origin outside of human awareness. Even in hard mes God
is with us, just as the sun connues to be in the sky, even when storm clouds hide it.
We also nd God near in people, who reect Gods image. There are saints in the past, and also
right around us. Have you had a me of sadness or loneliness, when you found someone near
who spoke helpful words of loving concern? The author of I John says, God is love, and he who
abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. (4:16) God is within the nearest loving
person. When that person is gone, Gods Spirit is sll there.
God may appear to us in the midst of daily tasks, just as Jesus appeared to future disciples, while
they were busy shing. Jesus called them to be his followers and they readily found themselves
embarking on a new mission in his company. Many people come close to God, as they respond
to the divine calling of service to others: major calls or simply the call to be a special kind of
people. Walking with God in dedicated service makes Gods presence very real, an inmate,
rewarding closeness.
