* Arroyo Seco hikers meet at BSLT office at 7:45 a.m. **Mitteldorf hikes include the option of a moderately strenuous or strenuous hike.

DAY

All day hikers meet with volunteer hike leaders at 8:45 a.m. (7:45 a.m. for Arroyo Seco hikers) at The Big Sur Land Trust office at 126 Clock Tower Place, Suite 101, Carmel. Please dress appropriately for hiking and weather conditions and be sure to bring ample water and a bag lunch or snacks. Hikes cancelled in the event of severe rain and/or weather. RSVP for all outings to 831.625.5523, ext 1. Visitors to Arroyo Seco Ranch will discover over 1,600 acres of stunning open grasslands, blue oak and sycamore habitats, and the propertys crown jewel, the Arroyo Seco River, one of the most pristine freeflowing rivers in the Salinas River system. A strenuous 4-mile hike with an elevation gain of 1,000 feet features rocky terrain and steep ascents and descents. Plan for an all-day excursion and bring ample food, water, and sunscreen. Located along Highway 68 southwest of Salinas, the 816-acre Marks Ranch offers visitors wildflower meadows, gently rolling hills, native grasslands and beautiful oak woodlands. The property also includes a 1920s-era Mexican style hacienda, and while at the Ranch visitors will learn about the inspiring legacy of the Marks family. The moderately strenuous 6-mile hike has an elevation gain of 800 feet. Plan for a 5-hour visit. Hikers at Glen Deven Ranch can enjoy two distinct Big Sur experiences. A moderate 2mile walk (round trip) atop Garrapata Ridge features breathtaking views of the Pacific. After a break for lunch, a more strenuous 4-mile hike descends 1,100 feet to the redwood-lined Garrapata Creek, then loops back up the Ridge. Plan for a 3 to 6-hour excursion, depending on whether you choose one or both of these hikes Mitteldorf Preserve is a magical sanctuary for some of Monterey Countys oldest redwood trees. Visitors have two options: a moderately strenuous hike (3 miles, with an elevation gain of 1,000 feet) that passes through old-growth redwood forest and includes panoramic vistas of coastal grasslands; or a more strenuous hike (5 miles, with an elevation gain of 1,900 feet) that features ancient stands of oak and magnificent madrone groves. Plan for a 5 to 6hour excursion and bring plenty of water. The easy 2-hour, 2-mile walk at Point Lobos Ranch follows the serene San Jose Creek, which travels through a deep canyon where pink rhododendrons bloom in the deep shade of the redwood forest. At the northern portion of the 10,000-acre Palo Corona Ranch, hikers pass through beautiful grasslands and stands of oak en route to Inspiration Point and its sweeping views of Odello Fields and the Carmel River opening up into the ocean beyond. Plan for a strenuous 4-mile hike (about 4 hours), with an elevation gain of 1,000 feet.
