Family Ministry
In July we taught a Parenting Seminar in Santos, Sao Paulo. This was an invitation that ocurred about six months before that left us both excited and scared at the same time. How were we going to teach on this subject, being our children are so young? By the pastors decision, it was done all in one day, which was very long and exhausting to us, but by Gods grace it went very well and we received many compliments. Unfortunately, family is a topic that is not very popular and it is hard to nd much material or ministries that deal with it. There are some wide doors being opened to us, and 2012 may be a year when we might see much work done in this area. Pray with us for guidance and wisdom to speak about this important topic. Topics covered in the Seminar: 1. God is a generational God. He cares about the next generations. 2. Correction. Why it is important and why our kids think it is good! 3. Relationship. No correction nor change will occur without cultivating a close relationship full of love and respect toward the children.
We see that the gospel is spreading fast in Brazil, but as a new church many What kind of material would we teach? lack a strong vision for their own As we prayed and talked it through with families. different pastors, we were encouraged As a result, most of drug addicts, that we did have something to give and prostitutes, transvestites and drug as we prayed we felt that this open dealers as well as homeless people door was from the Lord. weve met or ministered to are children of Christian families! So we spend a great amount of time seeking the Lord, studying the Word and inteviewing families to prepare the material. Finally we were there, teaching a three session seminar on parenting. There were a nearly 60 people and the pastor said, To my surprise, they all stayed till the end! So our hearts feel the heavy burden for families and even without speaking about it, the Lord has brought many to our door to minister to in this area. Besides the Seminar, weve had small chances to speak to couples that come to our house, as well as at a meeting for young married couples.
Summary of 2011
During our time in Brazil this year of 2011, we can say it was a very eventful year. Weve ministered in schools and also prepared material to be approved by the city council for the school ministry, and ministered to families. We have translated material to be used by Harvest Brazil, an organization that supports and equips churches nationwide to transform society with the principles found in the Word of God. We received 2 mission teams from America, were very blessed by the coming of Matt Barker from Living Word Church, who stayed with us for about 6 weeks. Besides the seminar on parenting in Santos, Sao Paulo, we were also able to reach out to many relatives there and strengthen the ones that had gotten saved in our prior trips. We gave support to Betesda, a local drug rehab center, helped at MANG Church as we were needed, interpreted in many churches for foreign speakers both from America and Argentina, helped young mothers with their pregnancies and births, and dealt with many Brazilian sicknesses and challenging situations that appear simply by being foreigners here. Although Fabio was born in Brazil, he left when was young and thus, acquired an accent speaking Portuguese and doesnt understand the local ways of doing many things. This causes a real challenge as he thought he was from here - but people dont think so! Elizabeth now speaks Portuguese very uently and has done very well dealing with the cultural differences and challenges. The children have been real troopers understanding well why they are in Brazil, and being the reason why so many doors are opened to us to minister to many families.
