A King After God’s Own Heart

Read 2 Samuel 5:1-7:29

Dee Dee Lee

David, a youngest son and a shepherd, was an unlikely candidate to become king of Israel.
But he was a godly role model and a great king. 2 Samuel 5:12 says, “And David realized that
the Lord had made him king over Israel and had made his kingdom great for the sake of his
people Israel.” God blessed David’s reign when he listened to and honored God and put his life
into God’s hands.

David’s early reign was filled with challenges as well as blessings. He had a heart filled with
great faith and love for God. He desired to please God and put him first. His exuberance and
joy during the celebration when the Ark of the Covenant arrived at Jerusalem, demonstrated
this. Even though his wife showed contempt for his dancing “before the Lord” that day, David
was willing to be a “fool” for God. What are the ways you show your love for God? Are you
willing be a “fool” for God and show others your love for Him? Lisa Bevier wrote, “We are
to leave an impression on all those we meet that communicates whose we are and what
kingdom we represent.”

God blessed David and promised him that his throne would be secure and his kingdom would
endure forever. The beautiful prayer of David in response to God’s promise reveals his great
love for God and his humility. “Who am I, O sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you
have brought me this far? …You know what I am really like, Sovereign Lord.”

David’s model of humility and his awe of God is an amazing legacy. In the first chapter of
the book of Matthew (Matt. 1:1-17), in the genealogy of Jesus, David is listed along with his
descendants. God kept His promise! God uses humble, Godly people throughout history to be
part of His legacy. David’s legacy shows us how to be a person after God’s own heart. He will
bless you when you put your life into His hands.

Dear God, I thank You for all the ways You’ve blessed me. I want to show others, through the
way I live my life, that I love You with all my heart. Continue to help me stay humble. All I am
becoming is only possible through Your unfailing love. I desire my legacy to show my love for
You, the God who loves even someone like me. In Christ’s name, Amen.
