One of the most common and useful voltage regulators ever is the LM7805.

It is a versatile linear regulator where in its TO-220 package can provide up to one amp of current at 5V. The only support circuitry needing to be a couple of capacitors to prevent high frequency oscillations on the outputs.

It is an absolute necessity for any TTL logic design and a great regulated voltage source for a wide assortment of projects.

Electronics
Well most of you must be wondering that this is going to be a hub about all those electronics stuffs that we have in our home, yes its kindly related to that but with a difference that this hub brings you the inside of all these gadgets that is there electronic circuits. In this hub I will give you the most basic cricuit electronic circuit for hobbists and students. So lets join the world of electronics.

Power Supply
To make things really simple lets start with a simple power supply, and it is also the one they usually give you in your first electronics project.Well the reason is quite obvious because all electronis circuits require a DC power supply to work. You really do plug in the wires of your

electronic items in AC mains supply but they do have AC to DC converters to to provide DC to the circuits. All this is done with a power supply in the right place.

This circuit is a small +5V power supply. The circuit will provide a regulated voltage to the external circuit which may also I am required in any part of the external circuit or the whole external circuit. The best part is that you can also use it to convert AC voltage to DC and then regulate it ,simlpy You need a transformer to make the AC main drop down to a safe value i.e 12-15 volts and then us a rectifier to convert AC into DC. This circuit can give +5V output at about 150 mA current, but it can be increased to 1 A when good cooling is added to 7805 regulator chip. The circuit has over overload and therminal protection. The capacitors must have enough high voltage rating to safely handle the input voltage feed to circuit. The circuit is very easy to build for example into a piece of veroboard. If you need other voltages than +5V, you can modify the circuit by replacing the 7805 chips with another regulator with different output voltage from regulator 78xx chip family. The last numbers in the the chip code tells the output voltage. Remember that the input voltage muts be at least 3V greater than regulator output voltage ot otherwise the regulator does not work well. Dont forget to check the pin diagram before connecting the IC.

7805 is a voltage regulator integrated circuit. It is a member of 78xx series of fixed linear voltage regulator ICs. The voltage source in a circuit may have fluctuations and would not give the fixed voltage output. The voltage regulator IC maintains the output voltage at a constant value. The xx in 78xx indicates the fixed output voltage it is designed to provide. 7805 provides +5V regulated power supply. Capacitors of suitable values can be connected at input and output pins depending upon the respective voltage levels.

Voltage Regulator (regulator), usually having three legs, converts varying input voltage and produces a constant regulated output voltage. They are available in a variety of outputs. The most common part numbers start with the numbers 78 or 79 and finish with two digits indicating the output voltage. The number 78 represents positive voltage and 79 negative one. The 78XX series of voltage regulators are designed for positive input. And the 79XX series is designed for negative input. Examples: 5V DC Regulator Name: LM7805 or MC7805 -5V DC Regulator Name: LM7905 or MC7905 6V DC Regulator Name: LM7806 or MC7806 -9V DC Regulator Name: LM7909 or MC7909 The LM78XX series typically has the ability to drive current up to 1A. For application requirements up to 150mA, 78LXX can be used. As mentioned above, the component has three legs: Input leg which can hold up to 36VDC Common leg (GND) and an output leg with the regulator's voltage. For maximum voltage regulation, adding a capacitor in parallel between the common leg and the output is usually recommended. Typically a 0.1MF capacitor is used. This eliminates any high frequency AC voltage that could otherwise combine with the output voltage. See below circuit diagram which represents a typical use of a voltage regulator.

Introduction

In earlier work you will have met the idea that the current flowing through each of several resistors connected in series with a power supply is the same, even if their individual resistances are different.

By applying Ohm's Law to the type of circuit shown above, we can show that different resistances connected in series will have different p.d.s across them and that the sum of the individual p.d.s gives the voltage of the supply connected to the circuit. In this unit we will see how two resistors in series with a power supply can be treated as a voltage divider and can be used as the basis for environmental sensors. (Note that some texts refer to such circuits as potential dividers.)
