Question 1: [10points] (a) [4points] Consider the extended LAN topology shown in Figure 1 where each thick line indicates a LAN segment. Bridges are IEEE802.1D compliant running the spanning tree algorithm and are indicated by squares with bridge IDs written in the center and port numbers as indicated. As shown, some ports may not be connected to any LAN segment. Stations are indicated by circles and their unique labels are written within the circles. You need to ll out the following tables which show the forwarding database entries of the bridges on this extended LAN after steady state has been achieved. (NOTE: steady state means that spanning tree algorithm has converged and all stations have transmitted at least one packet for all other stations).

Question 2:[5points] (a) [3points] Consider an extended LAN in which the bridges are transparent having distinct bridge IDs and are all running the spanning tree algorithm. Is it true that all the ports of a bridge elected as the root are designated? If yes, why? If not, give counter example? Solution: A root bridge has no root port. The root bridge has one designated port for each of the LAN segments to which it is connected. However, if two or more ports of the root bridge are connected to a LAN segment (or to LAN segments connected through a repeater or hub), only one of those ports will be designated while the others will be blocked. (b) [2points] Each enabled port of an IEEE802.1D bridge can either be root (RP), blocked (BP), or designated (DP). Of these three, what states a port can be such that the bridge transmits conguration BPDU on that port? Solution: Under normal circumstances, a bridge will transmit conguration BPDU only on the designated ports. Under topology change, a conguration BPDU will be transmitted on the root port too (topology change notication!). 2
