NATOs Role in the Liberation of Libya

Since March 23 2011, NATO commenced an operation called Operation Unified Protector to maintain peace in Libya and stabilize the conflict. Non-fly zone and arms embargo are the missions of this operation. Operation Unified Protector is mandated under Chapter Seven of the UN Charter. UN Security Council Resolutions 1970, 1973 and 2009 relate to NATOs mission. UNSCRs 1970 authorizes the taking of necessary measures to prevent the flow of arms, related materials and mercenaries to Libya. UNSCRs 1973 mandates all necessary measures to protect civilians and civilian-population areas under attack or threat of attack in Libya. From my point of view, I totally support NATOs role in the liberation of Libya to maintain the peace.

First thing first, lets take a look at the purposes of the operation . No-fly zone, the purposes of this mission are policing someone else's airspace without their permission and for reconnaissance purpose. This no-fly zone operation can do an air strike operation if necessary. There are 3 categories for terms of strike: pro, neutral, and anti. For example, NATO has conducted a precision air strike that disabled three ground-based Libyan state TV satellite transmission dishes in Tripoli. This air strike operation was necessary as TV was being used as an integral component of the regime apparatus designed to systematically oppress and threaten civilians and to incite attacks against them. Qadhafis increasing practice of inflammatory broadcasts illustrates his regimes policy to instill hatred amongst Libyans, to mobilize its supporters against civilians and to trigger bloodshed. This air strike categorized as the pro strike because it is purposed as the humanistic aids, peace protection and human rights protection. More over, this air strike was based on consideration and careful planning to minimize the risks of casualties or long-term damage to television transmission capabilities.

Arms embargo, this mission is to prevent the flow of arms, related materials and mercenaries to Libya. Supplying arms to either side would simply prolong the crisis, Its NATOs job to stop the arm supplies to Libya to make this crisis end earlier. Preventing mercenaries to Libya is necessary to decrease the amount of victims in Libya. By looking at the other case, NATOS intervention was needed to maintain the peace. For example, in Bosnian war. The Bosnian War began in 1992, as a result of the breakup of Yugoslavia. NATO intervention began on 12 April 1993 with operation deny flight enforcing a no-fly zone. In June 1993, operation sharp guard commenced. It provided maritime enforcement of the arms embargo and economic sanctions against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. On 28 February 1994, NATO took its first military action, shooting down four Bosnian Serb aircraft violating the no-fly zone. NATO air strikes that year helped bring the Bosnian war to an end, resulting in the Dayton Agreement. In conclusion, this is not their first try to maintain the peace around the world with the same methods. The need of NATOs role in many wars is still high in order to make this world peace and comfort for people to live. I absolutely support the NATOs role to maintain the peace in Libya. Resources :
