DescriptionofProcedure: Aspeakerisconnectedtotheoutputofadigitalfunctiongeneratorsoastocreateasoundsourcewith anadjustablefrequencyandintensity.Thefrequencyoutputisadjustedtoaverylowpitch.Thehollow tubeisheldverticallyabovethespeakerwithoneofitsopenendsaninchorsoabovethespeaker.The intensityofthespeakerisloweredsothatitisjustbarelyaudible.Thefrequencyisslowlyincreasedand thesoundisobserved.Theincreaseinfrequencycontinues;asthefrequencyofthesourcebeginsto approachthenaturalfrequencyofthehollowtube,anoticeableincreaseinintensityisobserved.This increasereachesamaximumwhenthefrequencyofthespeakermatchesthenaturalfrequencyofthe columnofair.Toinsureanaccuratereadingoftheresonantfrequency,thefrequencyoutputisadjusted untiltheloudestsoundisobserved.Thetemperatureoftheroomismeasuredforthepurposeof calculatingatheoreticalvalueforthespeedofsound.
