Business Unit Manager Primary Objective: Responsible for managing a business unit to successfully achieve personal and business

objectives and success measurements. Partners with Senior Management to define strategic direction and business unit specific objectives. Major Areas of Accountability:

Develop and communicate vision and expectation levels to unit members; relating them to corporate vision and strategic direction. Manage the successful integration of multi-disciplined team functions including Underwriting, Loss Prevention, Premium Audit, Customer Service and Administration. Define and develop unit member roles, responsibilities and accountabilities. Provide tools needed for the business unit to accomplish stated objectives. Consistently provide feedback and communication to unit members related to company and business unit performance. Empower unit members to make decisions based on established criteria. Select, coach, and retain qualified staff. Assess individual business and technical performance using results-based measures. Provide training and development opportunities where needed. Coordinate best practices compliance activities with the Insurance Operations Manager. Ensure operational compliance with best practices and quality assurance standards. Provide coordination between business unit members and technical specialists to remove obstacles to effective performance and success and provide feedback to technical specialists. Participate in corporate strategic planning. Develop and execute related business unit plans to retain and grow the book of business and to achieve profit and loss financial results. Partner with other business unit managers to address outstanding issues and achieve overall company business goals and objectives. Develop and execute strategies to integrate policy and claim objectives.

Measure overall business unit results against defined success measurements. Apply business unit policies, practices and procedures. Make operating decisions needed to achieve business results. Place and retain business and service policyholder accounts. Present business results and initiatives to the Board of Directors. Meet with policyholders and/or agents as needed. Respond to general service calls. Develop and manage the budget process.

Education Required: Bachelors degree in business or a related field; CPCU or other insurance designations desirable. Experience Required: Eight to ten years experience preferred in commercial insurance with emphasis on workers compensation and/or casualty experience. Some supervisory/management level experience required, preferably in a team environment. Suitable experience includes, but is not limited to, the following: 1. Managing, leading or supervising a work unit. 2. Responsible for business performance and financial results. 3. Responsible for achieving customer service standards. Skills Required: Specific and demonstrated ability includes, but is not limited to: 1. Ability to lead, direct and manage the results of a diverse, multifunctional work unit. 2. Ability to manage multiple tasks, set priorities and make decisions. 3. Understand and demonstrate a competent level of knowledge of the Underwriting, Premium Audit, Loss Prevention, Customer Service and Policy Administration functions of business unit.

4. Understand and possess a competent level of knowledge of the Workers' Compensation Industry. 5. Exceptional oral and written communication skills in both informal settings and formal presentations. 6. Possess a working knowledge of the claim administration functions. 7. Ability to understand and analyze various financial models. 8. Coach and guide staff toward improved performance. 9. Encourage decision making at the lowest competent level. 10. Inspire innovation and continuous quality improvement. 11. Serve as a positive role model to business unit members.
