One of my favorite Christmases was 2008. I had breast cancer
surgery in June of 2008 and was half way through chemo treatment,
which lasted 53 weeks. My family decided we needed to do some-
thing fun to meet half way between [Mineral Wells] and Colorado.
We rented a cabin in Ruidoso [New Mexico] for one week.
For a Christmas tree, we found a branch from one of the fur trees
and stuck it in a wine bottle. I was bald as a doorknob and everyone
wore hats because I had to wear a hat. My grandsons fed the wild
reindeer from the porch. They wanted to pick up the reindeer poop
to show their friends back home Santa found them in Ruidoso.
It was old-fashioned, with no shopping, and that was our treat
being together, she said. It brought to mind how very fortunate we
are to spend time together with family. It was the best Christmas gift
of all.

"We were at my grandmother's house, a big Victorian home there
in Mineral Wells, and she had 10-foot ceilings so the Christmas tree
was ... all the way to the ceiling. There's about 40 of us and we're
in this living room and there's wrapping paper everywhere and it's
really the only Christmas that we all got together and did Christmas,
Thanksgiving being our bigger holiday. Just a fond memory of us all
being together, I think she made 12, maybe 15 dozen yeast rolls.
They were rising everywhere in the sunroom; just pans and pans and
pans of rolls rising everywhere. It was the rst time I gured out
what a bourbon ball was, candy; I didn't realize it was going to be
