Sam, Whats your favorite part of winter? -Sara Crowley

Ryan, With a new semester, what are you looking forward to the most? - David Devers

Ngoc, When should I start planning for Spring Break? - Whitney Swales

My favorite part about winter has got to be, without doubt, less sweating. I love being able to pile on the layers--scarves, tights, ponchos (dont judge)-without dripping, Shaq-like, within ve minutes of stepping outside. Guys somehow manage to look hotter (zing!) post-perspiration. Guys and I do not have that in common.

Catherine, What is the best way to stay warm during the winter in Columbia? - Marilyn Gullickson

2012 is going to bring a lot of new things. For starters Im really stoked to road trip to the East Coast this summer. Ill be checking out Washington DC and possibly traveling to Cambodia for a student internship credit. I also turn 21 in April. Ive already started a list of clubs and bars to explore when the clock strikes midnight. Cant wait to RAGE.

Its never too early to plan for Spring Break! Starting right now would give you plenty of time to research all the places you can go. At this time you can get the best prices for hotels and beach houses. Once you get your research on lock, you can start asking your friends to make the trip with you. By February you will have your trip planned rather than planning it all last minute! Have fun guys!

My best advice is to stay indoors. But if you must venture outdoors, or we have an awesome snow day again, I would say dress warm and get some hand warmers. ere is nothing better than a good hand warmer on a cold, Cola day.

WIDESPREAD PANIC
When Widespread Panic arrives in Atlanta, its as if theyre coming home. The rock band originated just down the road in Athens. Theyve become one of the most popular jam bands in the country, and hold the record for selling out Philips Arena more than any other band at 17 shows. Throughout their history, theyve toured with Phish and have often been compared to the Grateful Dead and Allman Brothers. As one of the longest-running rock acts today, Widespread Panic puts on a show you cant miss. Its definitely worth the roadtrip!

NURSING THE DRINKS
How did you get into bartending? Laura Harris, 24 Hometown: Panama City, FL Major: Nursing

I started o waiting tables and had a friend who was a bartender who said Id be great at bartending and helped get me a job.
What do you do when guys try to irt with you at the bar?

If theyre cute then I irt back, but if theyre ugly then Im a smart ass. Actually, Im usually just nice to everyone.
What is the craziest thing youve seen at the bar?

One time a guy did a Stuntman. Its where you squeeze limejuice in your eye, snort salt o the back of your hand, and then take a shot of tequila. Totally crazy.
What do you love most about bartending?

Besides the money? Id have to say being able to hang out with friends and having a fun time.
Do you have any favorite regulars? Tell us about them.

I have a lot of regulars and I love them all!

If you could have one super power what would it be?

I would want the ability to make anything appear just by thinking about it.
Favorite drink?

Jameson and Coke. Recipe: Cup of ice, 3 parts Jameson, 1 part coke.

NEW YEARS
OR

The ball has dropped and youwell, youve dropped the ball. You may have forgotten to partake in the most important (yet often overlooked due to hangovers and a lack of ambition) New Years tradition, but never fear its not too late. So here they are, our resolution recs. Better late than never, eh?

HOT
Losing That Last 5 Lbs
Well ignore the fact that this has been your New Years resolution every year since you hit puberty. Your unwavering ambition is still impressive (though clearly your success rate isnt).

HOT

Writing A Book (Or, You Know, Not.)

You know how youve been tossing around the idea of writing a memoir for years? Well, lets be realno one wants to read that shit. Buy a pair of glasses, take your MacBook to Starbucks and pretend to write a book. Thats hot too.

Writing A Tell-All Blog

Its the age of the Internet, and if the first Google result for your name is a blog chronicling your sexcapades and resulting walks of shame, you might want to consider developing an online alias. Well, only if you have any hopes for a career atlikeany point in your life.

HOT
Getting Tested
If you havent done this already and youre not exactly the Virgin Mary reincarnate, get it together. Go get yourself and your potential infections to a clinic ASAP, because while responsibility is a total turn-on Chlamydia? Ehhnot so much.

HOT

Ending Your Shitty Relationship

If youre fighting more than youre having fun, your friends have stopped taking your calls and youve dedicated Monday (and Tuesday and Wednesday) nights to rage-induced binge drinking, its time to kick that fool to the curb.

NOT

Testing Your Luck

Nothings sexier than safety. The Chinese may have dubbed 2012 the Year of the Dragon, but lets go ahead and revise that. Year of the Trojan, anyone?

NOT

Ending Your Relationship In A Shitty Way

Lets make this clear: There is nothing more cowardly than doing the deed via text, or worseFACEBOOK. Its not you, its me is douchey enough without the sad emoticon.

HOT

Quitting Smoking
Not only is it bad for you, its bad for everyone around you. Would you give a baby a beat down? Punt a puppy? Exactly, so stop sucking down cancer sticks in public. Your lungs and the general public will thank you.

HOT

HOTTER

NOT
Quitting Smoking And Taking Up Dipping
Because the one thing more offensive than secondhand smoke is watching someone hack tobacco-infused lugies into a Dasani bottle.

Learning To Speak A Different Language

You only need a few key phrases, really. There is no oneno one! who isnt at least mildly aroused by someone crooning sweet nothings in their ear in a romance language. And the best part? You cant be offensive if you dont even know what youre saying.

Learning To Cook Foreign Food

Lets be realthe way to everyones heart (and ergo into their pants) is through their stomach, so break out the apron and get your Gordon Ramsay on. Because really, whats hotter than hells kitchen? STUDYBREAKS.COM | JANUARY 2012 | 11

COVER GIRL WINNER
words: sam sumpter photos by: shelley godfrey

GOOD THINGS COME IN SMALL PACKAGES

Take one look at Amanda Wilson (she prefers Mandie), and you can see shes a bombshell. Listen to her speak, and you know shes an intellectual. Meet her in person and...well, prepare to fall in love.

Wilson

12 | JANUARY 2012 | STUDYBREAKS.COM

t rst glance, it would be easy for a stranger to stick Mandie in the bimbo box. Five feet tall, probably 95 lbs soaking wet, and blessed with classic blonde-haired, blue-eyed, all-American good looks, its understandable the jealousy the tiny beauty would inspire. But unfortunately for the haters, the second you were to meet her, youd be proved completely wrong. Not only is the 22-year-old Texas State student smart (shes majoring in psychology with a minor in biology and counts bio-engineering plants as one of her hobbies), but shes also irresistibly nice with a wicked sense of humor and a surprising tattoo collection. Oh, and she could probably kick your ass. (Yes, you heard that rightshe does martial arts.) Study in contrasts Spend ve minutes with the bundle of energy that is Mandie Wilson, and youll realize theres no simple way to describe our cover girl except, perhaps, to say just that: eres no easy way to describe her. Well, maybe you could say shes a walking contradiction: A Texas native and self-described country girl who has done barrel racing and used to ride horses, she also spent some time (in ve-inch heels, for the record) as a club promoter in downtown Houston. She was a high school cheerleader and also the captain of her high school wrestling team. (See aforementioned ass-kicking comment.) She cites her favorite book as Gerald N. Callahans Faith, Madness and Spontaneous Human Combustion: What Immunology Can Teach Us About Self-Perception and her favorite movie as Gremlins. She paints and sketches in her free time, but she also has a passion for neuroscience and botany. She loves chocolate and margaritas, but she runs at least seven miles most days. She uses (mild) profanity in one paragraph of her

emails, and casually tosses Latin phrases into the next. Shes down-to-earth, but she has big dreams. I dont see why you have to sacri ce your passions to t in an easily readable box, she says. Let that be a lesson to us all. Back in the day It seems redundant, but eclecticism is the theme of her story (which not only makes her interesting to talk to, but nearly impossible to write about, by the way), and its the perfect word to describe her past as well. As noted above, in high school she was both a varsity cheerleader and the captain of the wrestling team, which is especially interesting since most wouldnt imagine the small, peppy girl with the giant smile whose instructing you to Be aggressive, be, be aggressive would be the same one youd be circling with on the mat before a grapple that would most likely end up with her pinning you down for a one, two, three count. In addition to her athletic past in high school, she has also had quite an interesting employment history. Her entry photo, a picture she readily admits is head-on-boobs (and garnered her over ve thousand votes in the contest), can be explained by one of her past jobs. Im generally a good girl but I came o as pretty wild when I worked as a promoter for various clubs in Houston, she explains. And its true that its easy to imagine people ocking into clubs when approached by such a friendly and outgoing girl, but it wasnt the perfect scenario for Mandie. It was awesome when you had a good conversation with people you were meeting, but it was lousy when you bumped

into creeps. e hours were awful but the pay was good. All in all it wasnt really worth it, it was always downtown and its not exactly the most crime-free part. (Apparently even high school wrestling doesnt ensure safety on the dirty streets.) Alongside that job, Mandie had one at a tanning salon, a gig that illustrates her hardworking tendencies as she worked her way up from what was essentially cleaner of ass sweat to manager, even overseeing the ownership change. Her resume also demonstrates that she took the time to work in the unpaid arena (that would be something called philanthropy, kids) with her work as a hostess for Riders for Readers, an organization that pairs equestrian activities with fundraising for schools.

STUDYBREAKS.COM | JANUARY 2012 | 13

I really appreciated how it taught me about humility and charity, she says. Half the time I was dressed classy and the other half I was in rags getting horse poo and mud o things; it didnt really matter because I knew I was contributing to an important cause. Education is so important. And its not hard to imagine someone who waxes nostalgic about the times of celebrity scientists like Albert Einstein and Marie Curie and dreams of becoming a professor prioritizing education. Flower Child Let it be known that its not all work and no play for Mandie, but when she lists her hobbies, while all are interesting and some are understandable, somewell, some are just unexpectedbioengineering plants, for example. e reason Im into bio-engineering glowing plants isnt because Ive watched Avatar too many times, she promises. I want to make the world a beautiful place and make people smile who doesnt love owers?but I know how to make it a major economical enterprise that wouldnt hurt the environment. And the girl is pure encyclopedia on the subject, explaining patiently that there are several ways to generate luminosity in plants involving GFPs (thats green uorescent proteins), gold particles and gene insertion, and that when it hits marketable status it will make a huge mark on what she says is a 36 billion dollar ornamental plant industry. ere are several plants and plant-like organisms that already are luminescent; I think the key however will be gene-insertion and ampli cation of gene expression, she says con dently in a language well dub Braniac. Yeahjust go with it. And the winner is Like you wouldnt typically expect a cover girl to be able to read an EEG (thats Electroencephalographyobviously) report, you wouldnt typically expect someone who dabbles in neuroscience to enter a cover girl contest. To be honest, I entered the contest on a whim; I didnt have
14 | JANUARY 2012 | STUDYBREAKS.COM

any expectations, she says, explaining that she told a few friends about it sheepishly. But as votes came in slowly at rst, by the second day they were pouring in, and the cover girl dream became a potential reality as the idea that winning was achievable sunk in. I think I thought it would be neat, she explains. Im a pretty odd girl. Ive got some stories and characteristics you wouldnt expect to be in one person, and I kind of hope that makes someone else who feels atypical feel like theyre special too. On the Horizon With a million di erent things going on in the present and a past thats just as diversi ed, itd be difcult or nearly impossible to guess our cover girls plans for the future (WWE starNobel Prize-winnerrabbit trainer?), and when asked, Mandie seems to have about as vague an idea. Im just going to roll with the punches and see how my experiences mold me; I like general plans but I have a lot more living to do, she says. I just want to be happy and explore life. I aim to be successful but I wouldnt mind making the world a little more beautiful I want to help others by sharing knowledge. Her undergraduate degree just nished o , with grad school plans and countless aspirations, its hard to imagine where shell end up in ve, 10 or 15 years, but while she describes her dream job as professor of psychology or biology, there is one career she mentions that seems like the perfect t. I always thought it would be cool to have a TV show called Sexy Science, she reveals. It would talk about science news and how things work sort of like Bill Nye but more MANswers. I wouldnt mind being the hostess on that. But while she has big dreams for the future, as of press time she was perfectly content with enjoying the present. My brain is so fried from nals and the stress of graduating and starting a new job, she admits. I cant wait for New Years so I can let my hair down.

LAUREN COONEY
ECLECTIC PIECES THAT SPEAK A MILLION WORDS
Making a place feel like home can be a difcult taskespecially when youre busy trying to balance two majors, two jobs and time for yourself. But Lauren Cooney, a senior double majoring in English and Anthropology, has taken the time between class, work andas of recentlybouts of rock climbing, to truly personalize her space. With a National Geographic wallpaper job, funky antiques and a certain fat feline roaming around, her bedroom is anything but boring. Tell us about yourself: Lauren Cooney, 21 Major: Anthropology Hometown: Cedar Hill

I am a senior double majoring in English and Anthropology. I also work two jobs so my schedule can get pretty chaotic but in my spare time Im usually nding new things to try, lately Ive been getting into rock climbing. Like every other college student everywhere, I love living on my own. ough, since Ive moved out of my folks place I certainly have not felt alone. When I rst moved to Austin, I moved into the Pearl Street Cooperative and was surrounded by another 100 crazy students like me. Best decision I ever made!
What is one item in your room that best describes you? How do you like living on your own?

What is one thing you wouldnt live without in your apartment? What was your inspiration for decorating your room?

My obese kitty, Simon.

Ive always liked a vintage look, and I just try to nd eclectic pieces that speak to me. I love walking around antique shops like Uncommon Objects and getting inspired.
How do you like living with roommates?

MY PLACE

Ive had good roommates, and also not so good roommates. at doesnt discourage me though, living with di erent personalities requires learning patience and compromise. You pick your battles!
When setting boundaries, what are some you discussed with your roommates?

Mix and match painted frames all in one color Organize your books by color for an extra pop!

Im not sure any one item could be re ective of me, but if I had to choose my favorite thing in my room is the map I created out of old National Geographic magazines. It was the rst DIY project I ever attempted and it has turned my dreary dorm room walls into a place that feels more like home.
What do you like best about living away from your parents?

e only real issues Ive had with roommates have involved people not doing their dishes, or not re lling a Brita pitcher. Oddly enough, Ive heard those sentiments echoed by my friends with their roommates. Apparently the almighty Brita pitcher can be a real deal breaker for some people. Just take a look @ passiveaggressivenotes.com
How close are you to campus? How do you like that?

Having the complete freedom to come and go as I please.

I am the closest I have ever been to school right now. I live in Harris Park and nothing is better than a 30 second bike ride to campus or a minute walk to JPs Java. But it de nitely makes nding an excuse to not go to class a little more di cult!

The Edge West

730 W Magnolia Ave (334) 821-0212
If you want to live on the edge, then The Edge West is the place for you! Only a fifteen minute walk from campus, The Edge West is conveniently located on West Magnolia next to Old Row. Its pool and gym are favorites among residents, and both Tiger Transit and the Security Shuttle pick up right across the street. The Edge West has all the perks of campus living but with room to breathe!

Madisen Bugbee, 21 I like that its close to campus, and it has a really nice pool to hang out at. I live in a third floor unit, so our ceilings are vaulted, which makes it feel extra roomy.

WARM UP THIS SEASON WITH Pork &Sausage

Winter Soups &Stews

Tortilla Soup

Jambalaya

While I normally hate winter weather and shivering in my boots, one thing I do love is cozying up on the couch with a big bowl of hot soup to warm up. Whether your New Years resolution is to lose a few pounds or just saying To hell with resolution weight loss, these recipes will sure be able to keep you warm all season long.

INGREDIENTS: 3 tbs extra virgin olive oil 6 corn tortillas, diced 1 tbs minced garlic 4 tbs chopped cilantro 1 tbs cumin 2 tbs chili powder 8 cups chicken stock or broth 2 cans diced fire-roasted tomatoes 1 large onion, chopped Salt and pepper to taste
Optional Toppings: chopped avocado, cheese, sour cream, chopped cilantro, lime juice wedges, cooked chicken

INGREDIENTS: 1 pound ground pork 2 grilled chorizo sausages, sliced 2 tbs Creole seasoning 2 tbs olive oil cup chopped onion 1 small red bell pepper, finely chopped 2 celery stalk, finely chopped 2 cored tomatoes, finely chopped 4 bay leaves 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce 1 tsp hot sauce cup of brown rice 3 cups chicken stock DIRECTIONS: In a bowl, combine ground pork with a tablespoon of Creole seasoning, and work in seasoning well. Make small meat balls with the pork. In a large saucepan, heat oil over high heat with onion, pepper and celery for about three minutes. Add garlic, tomatoes, bay leaves, Worcestershire and hot sauces and meat balls. Cook for about 3-4 minutes. Stir in rice and slowly add broth and another 1 tablespoon Creole seasoning. Reduce heat to medium and cook until rice absorbs liquid and becomes tender, stirring occasionally, about 15 minutes. When rice is just tender, add sliced sausages. Cook until rice is done and liquid is almost all gone, about 10 minutes more. Season to taste with salt, pepper and Creole seasoning.

DIRECTIONS: Heat oil over medium-high heat in large pot until hot. Add diced tortillas and garlic and cook until soft. Add cilantro, cumin, chili powder and stir to evenly coat. Add broth. Process tomatoes and onion in a blender until smooth and stir into soup. Bring to boil, then simmer for about 30 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

CORN CHOWDER
INGREDIENTS: 8 cups corn kernels (or 8 ears corn, husks and silk removed) 3 tbs unsalted butter 1 onion, chopped fine 4 slices bacon, halved lengthwise and cut into inch pieces 2 tsp thyme 2 tsp salt 1 tsp pepper

cup all-purpose flour

5 cups water pound red potatoes, cut into inch pieces 1 cup half-and-half 1 tbs sugar 3 tbs chopped basil

Melt butter in Dutch oven over medium heat and add onion, bacon, thyme, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring frequently, until onion is softened and edges begin to brown, about 8-10 minutes. Stir in flour and cook, stirring constantly, for 2 minutes. Gradually add water, whisking constantly, and bring to a boil. Add corn kernels and potatoes. Return to simmer, reduce heat to medium-low and cook until potatoes have softened, 15-18 minutes. Transfer 2 cups of chowder to a blender and process until smooth. Return puree to chowder, add half-and-half and return to simmer. Remove pot from heat and stir in reserved corn juice. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

DIRECTIONS: Cut kernels from corn or transfer corn kernels from can to large bowl. Pour about 2/3 cup of corn pulp/ juice from can into bowl.

MANAGING
THE NEW YEARS

STRESS

A Few Tips For Starting Your Semester Off The Right Way.
Finals are over and you can nally put the fall semester behind you. You got everything you wanted for Christmas (or you bought it with the money Grandma gave you), rang in 2012 with your best friends, and snagged that kiss at midnight. Life seems to be oating along pretty smoothly, but with the holidays dragging behind you and a shiny new semester in front of you, stress is right around the corner. Managing stress is never easy, but with some tips and tricks you can avoid caffeine-induced panic attacks in the middle of the night over registration, papers and rst deadlines, etc. The rst set of exams is always the hardest (or at least the one you seem to be least-prepared for), so here are a few ways to keep your head level and your workload manageable so that you dont totally fail at accomplishing those New Years resolutions.

GET ORGANIZED AHEAD OF TIME

Everyone starts off the semester with the best intentions you buy the new binders and planner, you write everything from your syllabi on your calendar, your backpack is organized and perfect, and youre ready to take the semester by storm. But what happens by the twelth class day? Youve lost your planner, all your notes are in the same binder and your backpack has become a black hole for everything you never wanted to lose. DONT LET THIS HAPPEN.

SET ASIDE TIME FOR YOURSELF

Pampering yourself is a necessity, not a luxury. Even if its just a bubble bath before bed, remember to treat yourself every now and then to keep a smile on your face.

HAVE A DRINK OR TWO

Theres no shame in having a glass of wine before bed or maybe a mimosa before class. If youre really on edge, take a break, turn on the game, and throw back a couple beers. Just make sure youre not passed out before you write that paper.

TALK TO SOMEONE
Whether its stress, relationship problems or just a case of homesickness thats got you down, theres no doubt your campus has an entire staff devoted to your mental well-being and willing to help you outusually for free! Dont be afraid to go in and talk to someone; theyre paid to hear you vent about your problems. You know, unlike your friends.

STRETCH IT OUT
Yoga is not only a great way to get in shape, but it really helps support a healthy mind and destress your whole body. Yoga helps teach you how to have total control over your diaphragm and breathing so that you can handle any type of stress physical or emotional.

FINISH SMALL ASSIGNMENTS EARLY

Quizzes and homework are usually pretty simple and quick, so why not get them done ahead of time? This way, you can stress about the big things that really matter, not the little things you forgot to do along the way.

VOLUNTEER
Focusing on others will help you forget about whats driving you nuts and add some positive energy into your life. Volunteer at a local soup kitchen or animal shelter (because who doesnt relax when rolling around in puppies?) to give back to the community and take a break from the books. YOUR FACEBOOK PAGE

Weve all been warned by professors, bosses, and parents alike: drunken Facebook posts and booze-lled photos will earn you a one-way ticket to unemployment and hopelessness (ok, maybe thats a stretch). But while educational enrichment and a meaningful occupation are important goals for a college student, theres no way were giving up Thirsty Thursday or our digital cameras lled with memories we dont actually remember. Heres the Study Breaks guide to (semi-)censoring your social media.

HOW TO... CLEAN UP

words: michelle blam photos: press

BECOME HANDY WITH PHOTOSHOP

Many a priceless moment has been edited with a simple crop or iPhotos handy retouch button; whole beer can logos or infamous red Solo cups can be blurred or darkened if theyre simply in the background of a good picture. The emphasis here also rests on good picture editing skills dont stand up to you passed out on the oor or using the toilet seat as a headrest. Do your best not to overshare party picturesespecially of this nature.

BEWARE OF YOUR ENDORSEMENTS

I cant imagine much would be worse than an employer scrolling through an info page to check educational history and discovering that their job candidate likes 2,589 pages of things ranging from LOLCats to That moment when you wake up to a text from him and you know its meant to be This like feature can be especially helpful if you subscribe to volunteer organizations, local businesses, or general causes you believe in, but lets keep any obsessions with felines and romantic clichs to ourselves, shall we?

PRIVACY SETTINGS ARE YOUR FRIENDS

Have a Facebook horror story? Tweet us: @StudyBreaks

28 | JANUARY 2012 | STUDYBREAKS.COM

Thanks to the Web, the whole Big Brother is watching you thing is coming creepily close to the truth, so take precautions and use social media privacy settings to your advantage. New additions to Facebook allow you to screen certain parts of your page to specic people as a blanket rule, limiting visibility of tagged photos to any friends over the age of 30 might be a smart idea. Wall posts by friends can be good to eliminate as well; drunk posting always sounds especially entertaining in the hazy moment, but Aunt Mable and the guy interviewing you next week probably dont think so.

USE DISCRETION

You want to appear happy, social and reasonably levelheaded when it comes to your social media page and hopefully, in real life, you are! Granted, we have all had our bad days and denitely a moment or two when we partied too hard, but photos or posts displaying these kinds of things are most likely a no-no. That snap of you and your dad enjoying wine over the holidays? Probably okay. That picture of you from Spring Break, inebriated and showing off umm every tan line? Absolutely not okay.
