GREEN BUILDINGS The way forward

09.30 AM, 9th August 2010 Hotel The LaLiT Ashok, Bangaluru

Introduction

orld over, today the major thrust and focus is on constructing environment friendly buildings. The concept is slowly spreading across various other countries across the globe, including India. The growth of the construction industry is crucial to the economic, social and human development of our country. If this growth is to be sustainable, adoption of energy efficient housing sector is a necessity. This would go a long way in addressing the national priorities of green-house gas mitigation and energy efficiency. It is estimated that two-thirds of the world population would be living in cities by 2050. India is already witnessing a process of rapid urbanization. This will lead to tremendous energy demand in urban areas. While this is a healthy trend, it is putting enormous pressure on the industry that has a vital role to play in preserving the environment. More than 70% of the infrastructure needed for a developed India is yet to be built and that gives great opportunity to build green. The scale and pace of construction in India is unparalleled and at this stage, awareness about green building materials, renewable energy systems and design services would play a significant role in sustainable development across the construction sector. India has emerged as one of the world's top destinations for green buildings and has implemented a number of home-rating schemes and building codes, which open up a wide range of opportunities in construction, architecture and engineering design, building materials and equipment manufacture. In the present context, ASSOCHAM with the support of Ministry of New & Renewable Energy and Government of Karnataka is organizing a Conference on Green Buildings- The way forward on 9th August 2010 at Hotel The LaLiT Ashok , Bengaluru.
