The hospitality industry has become so competitive that if customers and employees are dissatisfied, they will go elsewhere.

We want to be able to trust the people we do business with, but life has become more difficult and expensive, and ethical shortcuts have become the norm. adopted from Josephson Institute of Ethics Core Ethical Principles. They have served as the basis of ethics research coming out of Isbell Hospitality Ethics for the past 15 years importance of adhering to the Ethical Principles for Hospitality Managers during the decision-making process. Adherence to these principles will result in the best consequences for all parties involved.2

1. Honesty. Hospitality managers are honest and truthful. They do not mislead or deceive others by misrepresentations. 2. Integrity. Hospitality managers demonstrate the courage of their convictions by doing what they know is right even when there is pressure to do otherwise. 3. Trustworthiness. Hospitality managers are trustworthy and candid in supplyinginformation and in correcting misapprehensions of fact. They do not create justifications for escaping their promises and commitments. 4. Loyalty. Hospitality managers demonstrate loyalty to their companies in devotion to duty and loyalty to colleagues by friendship in adversity. They avoid conflicts of interest; do not use or disclose confidential information; and, should they accept other employment, they respect the proprietary information of their former employer. 5. Fairness. Hospitality managers are fair and equitable in all dealings; they neither arbitrarily abuse power nor take undue advantage of anothers mistakes or difficulties. They treat all individuals with equality, with toleranceand acceptance of diversity, and with an open mind. 6. Concern and respect for others. Hospitality managers are concerned, respectful,compassionate, and kind. They are sensitive to the personal concernsof their colleagues and live the Golden Rule. They respect the rightsand interests of all those who have a stake in their decisions. 7. Commitment to excellence. Hospitality managers pursue excellence in performing their duties and are willing to put more into their job than they can get out of it. 8. Leadership. Hospitality managers are conscious of the responsibility and opportunities of their position of leadership. They realize that the best way to instill ethical principles and ethical awareness in their organizations is by example. They walk their talk! 9. Reputation and morale. Hospitality managers seek to protect and build the companys reputation and the morale of its employees by engaging in conduct that builds respect. They also take whatever actions are necessaryto correct or prevent inappropriate conduct of others. 10. Accountability. Hospitality managers are personally accountable for the ethical quality of their decisions, as well as those of their subordinates.

Write Effectively Using Standard English and Correct Grammar Without good grammar and standard English skills, clear communication is nearly impossible. Proper grammar keeps you from being misunderstood while expressing your thoughts and ideas both written and spoken. Writing and speaking correctly gives you the appearance of credibility. If you're attempting to build a reputation as an expert in your profession, this is extremely important. Other people consider good grammar to be a mark of intelligence and education. Don't allow strangers to form a negative impression of you based on your poor communication skills. Comprehend a Variety of Texts Reading comprehension is the process of extracting and constructing meaning from text (Sweet & Snow, 2003). Comprehend a variety of texts including all forms of written material, communications, media, and other representations in words, numbers, and graphics and visual displays using traditional and technological formats. Some examples include literature, newspapers, news magazines, reference materials, textbooks, on-line information. Performance examples would be: follow multi-step instructions provided in a software manual, automobile owners manual or Internal Revenue Service instruction booklet. Create and Proofread Appropriate Professional Documents An employee may be expected to write business letters, memorandums and thank-you letters. View the business communication tools found on your computer word processing package. These standard forms make the details of completing written tasks much easier. Produce journals, essays, reflective writing, research reports, research papers, business, technical, or scientific writing. Performance examples would be: develop a set of instructions to operate a home media system, compose an email summarizing a meeting involving several people, develop a table comparing the positions of two political candidates on several issues, or prepare an editorial to publish online supporting a particular point-of-view. Calculate Correctly Using Numerical Concepts Such as Percentages and Reasonable Estimations Acquiring a solid foundation of mathematical concepts is critically important, because math proficiency relies heavily on cumulative understanding.

Infer How Scientific Principles are Used in the Hospitality and Tourism Industry "The scientific principle operates in the context of objective reality, which basically means two things: 1. The assumption that the observer and observed are completely separate. 2. The assumption that if many observers look at the same thing, it will still look/be the same thing. Within this context, the scientific method operates as follows:

First we create a set of axioms; things and rules which we will assume to be present, true and valid. Then we use these axioms on themselves, creating and unfolding a mental, abstract structure. When we're done unfolding, we have a comprehensive scientific theory. We now have the axioms and the theory, and two choices lie ahead of us: either we do nothing further with it (then it's mathematics) or we do something (then it's the rest of science). If it's not mathematics, we take a good look at our human world around us and see how well our theory fits the world we see. If our theory fits well enough, we apply and use it to achieve something we wish to achieve. If the theory doesn't fit well enough, we adjust the theory, fold it back, and try to find a new set of axioms which would unfold the abstract structure of the adjusted theory."
