Introduction
Introduction
Logos and Corporate Design (CD) Elements are a part of our
everyday-life; you cannot walk down a supermarket aisle, open
a magazine, drive down the highway or turn on television with-
out being pummelled with graphic IDs that send you various
messages. We have through time become increasingly aware of
the importance of acorporate design. With the growing globali-
sation, we fnd an increasing competition in all areas of busi-
ness, even when it comes to associations. It is therefore becom-
ing more and more important to be able to identify the diferent
products and using a logo and a specifc design is one of the best
ways of doing that.
Te ELSA CD should be identifed with a certain level of qual-
ity and image, no matter where a person is on the ELSA map.
Tey have to be able to fnd our products by our CD. Tis is
what is expected of us, pass the message just by glancing at the
ELSA logo, and just associate ELSA as synonymous of success.
When a sponsor is fnding the co-operation with one ELSA
group so satisfying that they are willing to sponsor another
ELSA group, it is vital that the other ELSA groups appear to
be from the same organisation and do not work with their own
ELSA style, structure or products of ELSA.
It is in everybodys interest to use and maintain the same and
correct ELSA design in every country, in every Local and Na-
tional Group, as well as in all marketing materials.

Logo
ELSAlogo
ELSA becomes visible with the help of a multitude of publica-
tions. What they all have in common is the display of the word/
fgurative mark the organisations most important identifca-
tion marking.
Te even and straight composition of the word/fgurative mark
represents the values ELSA members expect from their organi-
zation: credibility, confdence and representation.
In this scope, the assembly and organization of the fgurative
mark (1) and the word mark (2) is fxed and predetermined.
Te position of the individual elements of the word/fgurative
mark is defned by the width of the bar in the letter L (A).
Te arrangement of the word mark towards the fgurative mark
is always centred below.
Te name of National and Local ELSA groups stands centered
below the word mark wiht an interspace of A.
In both printed and electronic publications, the logo may not
be printed or displayed in two colors or in diferent screens of
one color. It should remain in the approved formats and pro-
portions.

ELSA-Logocolourversions
Te colour versions of the word/fgurative marks are specifed
diferently for the felds internet, ofce and print. In addition
to this, there is a variation of diferent shades of grey for single-
colour printing as well as versions in black and white for faxes
and special applications.
For printed publications it is imperative to use the EPS-format
of the Logo, as it guarantees a clear printing.
Tere might be a need for further fle formats depending on the
production technique and the employed ofce technology.
Logostandardblue
Te logo in ELSA blue is the standard
logo and is to be used for all coloured
publications
Logoinverted
Te inverted, white version of the
logo is used when the logo is to be
placed against dark backgrounds.
Logogrey
Te grey logo is used in order to place
emphasis on something or not to dis-
tract from important content.
Logoblack
Te black logo is used on faxes or
master copies (that are to be photo-
copied).

Protectedzoneanddeformation
A logo needs to be surrounded by an area that is left clear.
To be representative, the ELSA logo also needs an expansion
space. Tis clearly defned protected zone is to be respected in
all applications. Te size of this protected zone is determined
by the cap height of the letter L in the ELSA logo and is to be
respected for all directions.
All modifcations lead to the distortion of the character of the
word/fgurative mark and are therefore illegitimate. Tese in-
clude in particular irregularities in the typefaces, the omittance
of individual parts, the turning and deforming of the word/
fgurative mark as well as variations in terms of colour.
Te logo shall neither be used in connection with any state or
national symbols of any country nor be animated in any way.

Colours
Basicbrandcolours
Colours are essential components of a corporate design. Te
ELSA colours are derived from the logo and its allowed varia-
tions in colour. Furthermore, accents can be set by the econom-
ical use of orange. Only the pictured defnitions are permitted
due to their exposed valency.
As a principle, it is recommended to use CMYK (cyan-magen-
ta-yellow-black) shades for all print productions. Te full tone
colours (spot colours) of the HKS palette should only be used if
the entire print production could be achieved with fewer than
four colours and would thus result in cost savings.
RGB-colours (red-green-blue) are used for all screen and projec-
tor presentations. Te system of hexadecimal colour defnitions
was created especially for internet applications. Tree consecu-
tive, two digit hexadecimal numbers each represent one colour
of the RGB colour space.

Typeface
Onlytwofontfamiliesarebeingused
Te ELSA corporate design uses fonts with prominent profles.
Te choice of Garamond, an Antiqua-type of fonts that clearly
difers from the widely spread Times fonts, conveys power, el-
egance and generosity. In order to intensify this impression, the
line spacing for the standard body text has been increased to
14 pt.
For headings and prominent paragraphs another ELSA corpo-
rate design font, the sans-serif linear Antiqua font Helvetica
New is used. In this context, the word ELSA is always in bold
and in majuscules.

Youngbutambitiouspeopleinafreshfashion
Pictures convey messages on a subconscious level. Tey talk to
the observer on an emotional basis. Terefore it is of utmost
importance that the pictures are selected with meticulous care.
Te pictures need to be perceived as credible. One should be
able to clearly associate the people and situations shown in the
picture with the ELSA members reality.

TeELSAgrid
A distinctive corporate design not only consists of individual
basic elements but also of their combination and assembly. Fur-
thermore, an organized and consistent positioning of the dif-
ferent design elements allows for an economic production of
prints as well as their further processing and use.
A grid has been developed for the ELSA corporate design pro-
viding an organising principle: for every section of the docu-
ment there is an underlying basic grid. Te organisation of the
latter results from the edge distance. All graphic elements, im-
ages and texts have their own, defned position in this grid.

LetterheadandBusinessCard
Te set-up of the letterhead, with the word/fgurative mark cen-
tred on the top of the page, allows for a generous layout also
with regard to the address feld at the bottom right of the page.
Te corporate design ofers both a representative coloured ver-
sion and one in shades of grey which can also be used as master
copy. Furthermore one could use Times New Roman instead
of Garamond and Arial instead of Helvetica for correspond-
ence utilizing the letterhead, note paper, memo and fax sheets.
One should however note that Times and Arial typefaces show
bigger variances in their positioning and therefore convey a less
organized picture than Garamond and Helvetica.
Te business cards are organized according to a consistent grid
with reference to the print space in two columns. Tey are the
size of bank cards (85x55 mm).
Te word/fgurative mark is to be found at the right bottom,
with however the entire right space of the card remaining clear.
On the left side of the card one can fnd the contact persons
contact data. Te data of the organization is at the same height
as the word/fgurative mark. At the top, quite prominently, one
can fnd the persons name and function (two lines maximum).

e NEWInternational Focus Programme
e idea behind the International Focus
Programme (IFP) is to have a specic theme for
the whole ELSA Network to focus its eorts on
over a xed term.
e theme covering a hot legal topic should
give ELSA the chance on Local, National and
International Level to have an impact on law
students and young lawyers, society and the
international community.
In ICMPrague, Intellectual Property Law
was chosen as the new IFP topic. e duration
of the new IFP is between 1st November 2007
and Spring ICM2009 and the nal result of the
IFP will be a conference and a publication. e
preparations for the implementation of the new
IFP will be presented in ICMReggio di Calabria.
Should you have any contributions about the
implementation of the New IFP, please do not
hesitate to contact ELSA International:

Editorialdeisgn
Ofering Synergy, ELSA provides a magazine to its members
which clearly outclasses comparable products from student en-
vironments. Terefore, this publication deserves particular at-
tention in the scope of the development of a new corporate de-
sign as it also addresses interested non-members. Te generous
design of the cover and the inside as well as the clear separation
of the cover story and additional articles is to be emphasized.
