2010 Kokoda Challenge - GPS and Distance Points Important Notes Regarding Use of These GPS Data

The Association does NOT recommend that these GPS points be used as the sole navigation aid for the Challenge (The notes and maps have been provided for that purpose) The waypoints use the UTM grid coordinate system (The alternative Latitude/Longitude system is not useful when used in conjunction with topographic maps) The waypoints use the AGD 1966 (AUS66) datum, NOT the WGS 1984 (GDA 1994) datum {Some of the maps covering the Challenge course have not yet been published under the newer datum. For uniformity, the older 1966 datum is used.)

Limitations of These GPS Data

The waypoints here have not been downloaded from a USB-enabled GPS receiver; they have been manually transcribed * Therefore, they may not necessarily capture the full range of directional changes throughout the course * Occasionally, change points may be absent or rounded off to 6-figure map references * Although care has been taken in the transcribing of these waypoints, they cannot be guaranteed to be free of errors The positional accuracy of the points will vary considerably, depending on the terrain and vegatation cover * Although GPS receivers may report accuracies to 5 m, the repeatable accuracy may be no better than 10 - 15 m. * In gullies or heavily forested terrain, accuracy may be no better than 40 - 60 m
