are concentrated in the International Office. The International Office has 30 staff members in 3 units: International Policy, Development Cooperation and International Admission and Mobility. Several staff members from two units are in charge of the follow up on the EMECW projects in general and specifically for the Monesia project: International Policy and the International Admission and Mobility Unit. After their official acceptance by the University of Gttingen, the grantees received an official invitation/admission letter and scholarship attestation from the K.U.Leuven (required for their visa application, registration at the K.U.Leuven and registration at the city hall). They also received practical information concerning housing possibilities, prior to their travel to Leuven. Upon arrival in Leuven the grantees will be welcomed by their case administrator at the International Office. They will get general information on living and studying in Leuven, help with administration, information on how to open a bank account (within 2 days, exceptional for EMA2 students) and the payment of their scholarship. This is also an opportunity for them to ask questions. Then, their case administrator will accompany them to the Registrars Office to enrol. The grantee doesn't have to pay the tuition fee. After enrolment he/she will receive a proof of registration, student card, K.U.Leuven agenda, sport card, culture card, Living in Leuven booklet, city map & free bus pass. After arriving in Leuven EMECW students and guests also have access to the wide range of facilities of K.U.Leuven: The International Housing Office assists in finding suitable housing. The Social Service provides information and assistance to questions of a legal, financial or practical nature. The Student Employment Office provides students information concerning employment possibilities. Study Advisory Centre provides advice and support on study-related matters. The Medical Centre is staffed by a team of doctors with extensive experience in student-related health issues. Students dealing with personal or psychological problems can apply to the Psychotherapeutic Centre for professional help. There is an ombudsperson to deal with certain kinds of unacceptable behaviour within the university community and a Vice-President for Student Affairs to appeal against certain decisions. The K.U.Leuven provides a wide range of ICTS facilities (Kotnet, possibility of hiring computers, computer classes, etc) A University Parish open to inter religious dialogue International students are offered the possibility to upgrade their English language skills at the Language Centre (two types of courses are being offered: Academic English for Master/Doctoral students; Crash Course English) (at student-friendly tariffs). The Language Centre also provides courses in a range of other languages, open to all exchange students/visiting staff, including Dutch. Every international student can request a personal buddy, a Flemish student who can answer all his/her practical questions and show him/her around Leuven and its university.
More information on http://www.kuleuven.be/admissions and http://www.kuleuven.be/welcome Social activities arranged: The International Office will organize a welcome and information session for EMA2 students, staff and postdoc, probably at the beginning of October 2011 (date to be confirmed) To help new international students/guests during their first few days in Leuven and to learn them more about Belgium, the International Office organizes a special orientation programme with trips, tips, information, and lots of opportunities to meet fellow students. These Orientation Days are scheduled 15-24 September 2011. Programme can be consulted on http://www.kuleuven.be/orientationdays/september/index.html Pangaea is a lively meeting place where international and Belgian students can get together in an informal setting.
