THE GREAT FLAVORED MILK
DEBATE
(NewsUSA) - A great debate has been building for
the past ve years in school districts across the country:
Is avored milk contributing to childhood obesity, and
should it be taken out of schools?
Facts, research and experts say no. Flavored milk
contains the same nine essential nutrients as white
milk, including calcium, vitamin D and potassium,
three nutrients that children arent getting enough
of, according to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for
Americans.
On average, avored milk accounts for only 2 percent
of total calories and 3 percent of all added sugars in
kids diets. But studies show that schools see a severe
drop in milk consumption when chocolate milk is taken
away, says Alyssa Greenstein, a registered dietitian
with the Dairy Council of Florida. And the nutrients
lost from not consuming enough milk arent easy or
affordable to replace.
Research nds that low-fat chocolate milk is the most
widely chosen milk option in schools, and despite the
availability of white milk, children will turn to sodas and
fruit drinks if avored milk is removed from cafeterias.
Sodas are the main source of added sugar in childrens
diets, and unlike milk, they offer no nutritional value.
Many nutrition and health organizations -- including
the American Heart Association, the American Academy
of Pediatrics, the American Dietetic Association and
the School Nutrition Association -- agree that avored
milk is a healthier alternative to soft drinks and a vital
part of meeting the dietary needs of youngsters.
If children dont drink milk with lunch, it becomes
almost impossible for them to consume the daily
intake of calcium, vitamin D and potassium, which are
nutrients of concern as it is, says Greenstein.
Drinking avored milk is a small but signicant
contributor to a childs total milk consumption, and it
doesnt mean youngsters neglect white milk. In fact,
avored milk makes up only 20-26 percent of kids
total milk intake.
A recent survey of 1,000 moms discovered more
than half opposed any school district decision to
eliminate chocolate milk from the menu. In the past
ve years, milk processors nationwide have made
signicant nutritional changes in milk formulations.
With 38 percent less added sugar, avored milk is
projected to contain, on average, just 31 calories more
than white milk.
To see more of the nine essential nutrients found in
avored milk, visit www.oridamilk.com.
COUNTY SIGNS FIVE-YEAR
CONTRACT WITH ANIMAL SHELTER
From Staff Reports
BIG RAPIDS Mecosta County Commissioners
voted 6-0 to approve a ve-year contract to continue
services with the Mecosta County Animal Shelter,
which supersedes a short-term agreement signed last
month.
Under the new agreement, the animal shelter will
use lethal injection to euthanize unwanted dogs and
stop usage of its carbon dioxiSde gas chamber.
The shelter also is required to ensure that unwanted
animals only be sent to Cheri Hill Kennels a class
B medical research facility in Stanwood and its
on-site subsidiary. The kennel is licensed by the
U.S. Department of Agriculture to research animal
products on dogs, such as dog food avors or parasite
vaccines.
Animals sent to Cheri Hill are not allowed to
subsequently be sent to similar facilities, according to
the contract.
(Ken and Susan) DeVries shall ensure that no
animals be transferred from Cheri Hill to any other class
B dealer, said Commissioner Bill Routley. We felt that
onus should be on the DeVries since our contract is
with them and this is a stipulation in their contract with
Cheri Hill. It will be up to them to monitor that.
The new long-term agreement supersedes a six-
month contract approved last month, which was
penned to allow county ofcials more time to ensure
that Cheri Hill would agree not to send dogs to other
class B dealers.
The DeVries will be compensated $35,000 for 2012
to operate the shelter. That rate will increase annually
through 2016 by either 1 percent or by the Consumers
Price Index (CPI) ination rate, as determined by the
Michigan Department of Treasurer for property tax
purposes, whichever is greater.
In other news, commissioners Art Adleman and Eric
ONeil were appointed commission chair and vice
chair, respectively, for 2012.
Commissioners also appointed Paul MacKersie,
of Barryton, to the countys Department of Veteran
Affairs Board of Trustees. MacKersie is a member of
the Barryton American Legion Post No. 473.

ENERGY-EFFICIENT HEATING KEEPS
COST-CONSCIOUS HOMES COZY
(NewsUSA) - With many Americans watching their
budgets, heating homes has become an unwanted,
though necessary, expense.
According to the U.S. Energy Information
Administration, many American homes will experience
higher heating costs this winter due to increased fuel
prices. Thankfully, simple behavior changes and
energy-efcient appliances can help homeowners
cut their heating bills and still enjoy the same level of
comfort.
Energy-efcient heating means that you use less
energy to heat the same space, said Phil Weeks,
chief operating ofcer of Rinnai America Corporation,
a company that manufactures gas heating appliances.
This saved energy translates into reduced utility costs
for homeowners.
Some energy-efcient heating devices, like Rinnais
hydronic furnace, which works in conjunction with the
companys tankless water heater, can heat a home
while still conserving energy. Featuring a high-efciency
motor that offers up to 48 percent better efciency than
a comparable traditional motor, the hydronic furnace
is powered by Rinnais gas-modulating tankless
technology, so it uses only the energy needed to
maintain a rooms desired temperature. Because the
unit utilizes hot water from the tankless water heater to
heat air, the heat it provides is less dry than that of a
typical forced-air furnace.
Another efcient heating option is to forego a
traditional furnace in favor of a direct vent wall furnace.
These ductless units are capable of comfortably heating
whole homes or specic zones, depending on the need,
and save energy by constantly adjusting heat output
and blower speed to meet current demand. Rinnais
gas-modulating direct vent wall furnace also can serve
as a supplementary heat source for basements, guest
rooms, room additions and generally hard-to-heat
areas, thus reducing the demand placed on a homes
central heating system.
Of course, homeowners can take steps to help their
current heating units operate on less energy. Consider
the following efforts:
* Seal and weather strip doors and windows to
prevent heat from escaping the home.
* Reverse the direction of ceiling fans (so they turn
clockwise) to push warm air down from the ceiling.
* Minimize the use of bathroom and kitchen hood
fans as they can quickly remove heat from the air.

SOCIAL CHANGE: A NEW YEARS
RESOLUTION FOR 2012
(NewsUSA) - Political unrest, environmental crises
and economic challenges on a global scale practically
dened 2011. The Arab Spring ousted three iron-sted
rulers, a deadly earthquake led to mass radiation
exposure in Japan and Occupy Wall Street emerged
to be a historical, internationally united protest. The
year 2011 seized the idea of social change and ran
with it.
Will that momentum continue throughout 2012? All
signs point to yes, and Walden Universitys recent Social
Change Impact Report conrms the trend. The results
indicate the importance of social change and reveal
that people are taking action now and will continue to
do so in the future. The survey shows that more than
nine in 10 Americans (92 percent) have taken action to
engage in positive social change in the past year and
that more than half of them are committed to engaging
in future positive change as individuals acting on their
own or in informal groups.
Around the world, people are thinking globally and
acting locally, notes Jonathan Kaplan, president of
Walden University. People have a strong belief in their
own power to effect positive social change and make
a difference.
The Social Change Impact Report also states that
nearly nine in 10 adults in the U.S. (88 percent) believe
the best way to have an impact on the world is to make
change at the local level. At a time when many families
and organizations are vulnerable, and fewer resources
are available to support the socioeconomic challenges
that exist, individuals now more than ever have the
opportunity to make a difference in their communities
and beyond.
Walden University offers ve practical tips to
encourage citizens to participate in 2012.
1. Think about what kind of positive social
change you want to effect.
2. Assess what specic skills or expertise you
can offer to help address a particular need.
3. Connect your passion and skills with your
commitment to serve.
4. Research ways your workplace can get
involved in the community.
5. Use a resource that can match you with an
organization that needs your skills.

Impact Report, visit WaldenU.edu/impactreport,

PARENTAL FEARS
(NewsUSA) - The kids are in school,
which means they spend most of their
day without parental supervision. The
days when parents only had to worry
about their kids skipping class and
getting bullied for lunch money are
gone. Now, new threats have emerged
around cell phone use.
According to a survey performed by
Internet monitoring software company
SpectorSoft, sexting is parents primary
concern during the school season.
Absolutely, said Rebecca Hagelin,
a parent who uses SpectorSoft to track
her three teenagers. Its allowed my
children to enjoy all the benets the
latest technology has to offer them,
and its allowed me to protect them
from the dangers of some of the new
technology, she said. Its a win-win.
Smartphones with advanced Internet
capabilities have greatly increased
parental fears about cyberbullies, online
predators, sexting and the exchange of
inappropriate messages and pictures.
SpectorSoft reports that 82 percent
of all families surveyed contain at least
one child who has a smartphone. Even
if teachers and school faculty can keep
students off their phones during school
hours, who protects them after school?
Bryan Bowers, author of Keep Your
Family Safe Online, said that the
survey proves parents are starting to
gain greater awareness of what their
children are actually up to on their
phones and online. So many children
have smartphones, and this tells me
parents are starting to get the idea
that these devices can be a problem
for children, Bowers said. They are
starting to see the reality of what is out
there.
SpectorSoft, focused on monitoring
products for children since their
inception in 1998, has released eBlaster
Mobile for Android and BlackBerry
phones. This software keeps track
of all activity on these smartphones
by monitoring and recording text
messages, calls and Internet activity
and then sending that information to
the parent. It also has Geofencing
capabilities to enable parents to better
understand the whereabouts of their
children through their mobile devices.
Parents can create electronic location
boundaries -- or fences -- that trigger an
alert notication when their child enters
or exits a pre-dened area with their
mobile device.
eBlaster is designed for maximum
parental convenience and child safety.
The software can be downloaded from
its website, www.spectorsoft.com,
and then managed from any remote
location. Plus, it has a GPS function
reporting the exact location of the
phone in the event of emergencies.
MINIMIZE RETIREMENT RISK WITH
PERMANENT LIFE INSURANCE
(NewsUSA) - With persistent
economic uncertainty, retirement
worries plague many Americans.
Instead of dreaming about their golden
years, workers may be haunted by
the possibility of a retirement where
the idea of not having enough money
may not be hyperbole. Consumers are
looking to diminish risk and take control.
A nancial professional will tailor a plan
to t an individuals own nancial goals,
but permanent life insurance should
be a part of any diversied retirement
strategy and can offer security and
growth for those with a number of
working years ahead.
Permanent life insurance offers death
protection as well as the potential for
cash value accumulation, which can
be an important source of retirement
income. As the value of a permanent
policy grows tax deferred over time, the
cash may be used for any purpose.* This
kind of life insurance offers a measure
of exibility that enables consumers to
make choices and better manage their
nancial lives and can augment other
income sources like Social Security,
401k savings or pensions for those
lucky enough to have them.
The income stream from a permanent
life insurance policy may also help cover
the gap years, which fall between
retirement and the age when Medicare
and Social Security benets begin.
Most retirees will need the guidance
of a nancial professional to determine
the best use of resources during the
gap period and throughout retirement.
However, consumers should know that
a permanent insurance policy could be
the difference between retirement at an
age you desire instead of when Social
Security and qualied plan distributions
start. This additional resource may also
enable a retiree to delay the start of
Social Security payments, which will
ultimately deliver larger monthly sums
over time.
In addition to assisting with bridging
the gap years, a permanent insurance
policy may help cover unexpected or
planned expenses from healthcare
costs, to paying for a grandchilds
college education, to contributing to the
start-up of a family business.
No matter how permanent insurance
is ultimately used, if structured properly,
a policy can provide an income tax- and
estate tax-free death benet. Retirees
can then spend their retirement income
knowing they will still leave a legacy to
their children or a favorite charity.
To learn more about how to leave a
legacy and strengthen your retirement
plan with permanent life insurance,
please visit www.pennmutual.com.
