Materials The batch distillation experiment consist of several different types of equipmen t and materials.

Takeing a look at Figure 1. you will notice the different components of the lab. Image (Figure 1). (I was thinking of changing the colors, the blue color was de fault. Can change later) Taking a closer look at the system, we can see that it consist of a heating jack et, still pot, condenser, refrigerated bath, a reflux junction attached to a valve, vents, and a reciever. The still po t is initailly filled with a feedstock of raw sugar cane juice. It is heated with the heating jacket that is wrapped aroun d the still pot. Once the feed solution reaches a temperature vapor will rise through the column and into the condenser where some of the vapor will condense into liquid and return to the still pot. The condenser is attached to the refrid gerated bath which allows cooled water to flow through the condenser and condense the vapor. The remaining vapor will t hen either be returned to the column or subcooled into a receiving resovour. Additional material that would be needed are syringes, thermometers, stop watch, SRI Gas Chromatograph (GC), and a computer. As one can easily guess, the thermometer will be used to take temperat ure readings and the stop watch will be used to record the time when needed. The syringes will be used to remove samp les of the solution from the still pot, receiving resivour, or from the column itself. Once a sample is taken, the GC wi ll be used to analyze the sample and provide a composition of the sample. Finally, the computer will be used to retri ve the GC data and to input all data received throught the experiment Methods (Brief start-up idea) 1) Time to reach S.S. - Start timer and jacket heater at same time. Take samples of the gas vapor and record time taken. When vapor compostion remains constant, system has reached steady state. Take sa mples at intervals of 1 min (or another value) Make sure you are running under total reflux. 2)Optimal Conditions ro distill inlet mixture as it approaches the expected outl et concentration from upstream distillation process- Figure out from other group what is an expected outlet concentration fo r a distillation process (beer column). Play with temperatures and reflux/boil-up conditions to find the optimal conditi on. 3)Develop systematic method of estimating the time that would be necessary to di still the product to different final compostions in the receiver- Run experiment at different condition while keeping track of ti me. After data is collected some sort of correlation or trend may be derived. 4)Construct Plot- Run experiment and collect data.
