 has long been recognised that the Vatican and Alex-
ITandrian Manuscripts contain two different recensions of
the Book of Judges. No one would venture to dispute the

statement which Grabe made in his Letter to Mill in the year

1705: "omnibus mediocriter tantum Graecae linguae peritis

primo intuitu patet Vaticano et Alexandrino codice duas di-
versas dicti libri (Judicum) versiones, vel saltem duas Edi-
tiones saepissime ac multum inter se discrepantes contineri."
Whether we should follow him further in his preference for
the text of the Alexandrian MS, and in his identification of
the Vatican text with the Hesychian recension, are questions
not so easily answered.
No final verdict can yet be pronounced, but a preliminary
investigation of the earlier chapters leads to the surmise that
the true text of the Septuagint is probably contained neither
in the one nor in the other exclusively, but must be sought
for by comparing in detail, verse by verse, and word by word,
the two recensions, in the light of all other available evidence,
and especially of the extant remains of the Hexapla.
In any case the differences between the two recensions
of the Book of Judges are so great that in the Larger Edition
of the Cambridge Septuagint it will be impossible to pre-
sent the textual evidence clearly if the text of alone be
taken as a standard, the readings of MSS which contain
the A recension being treated as variants. It will therefore be
necessary to follow the plan inaugurated by Lagarde in his
Septuaginta Studien (Gottingen, 1891), and print the texts of
A and on opposite pages.
Accordingly for purposes of collation a trustworthy Edition
of the text of A for the Book of Judges in a convenient form
has become necessary. And the Syndics of the University
Press have decided to publish it uniformly with the Manual
Edition, in the hope that some readers will find it a con-
venient and useful adjunct to the first volume of that Edition.
The text of the MS has been closely followed, and every
variant has been recorded in the foot-notes. It has not been

thought necessary to record the abbreviations. The proofs

have been collated with the photographic facsimile published
by the Trustees of the British Museum in 1881.

Dr F. G. Kenyon, Assistant Keeper of MSS in the British

Museum, has promised to examine, for the purposes of the
Larger Edition, the corrections made by later hands through-
out the O. T. Books in the Alexandrian MS. In thus sup-
plying what Dr Swete has pronounced to be a real need',
Dr Kenyon will earn the gratitude of all students of the
Septuagint. For the Book of Judges the result of his investi-
gation is embodied in the notes of this Edition. That the
MS has suffered less from correction in this Book than else-

where will be seen from the following statement which he has

kindly sent us for insertion in this Preface.
"The question of correctors' hands is not of much im-
portance in the Book of Judges ; the corrections being few,
and for the most part confined to the removal of obvious
errors. In the critical notes attached to the following text,
A* denotes the original writing of the MS ; A^ corrections made
by the original scribe himself (which are almost always simple
amendments of slips of the pen, not implying any alteration

of reading) and A-'^ corrections made by the principal reviser
;

of the MS. This is the hand which has elsewhere made a

large number of important alterations in the text but in the ;

Book of Judges it is not much in evidence. In date it would

appear to be not much later than the original writing, and
may be proifisionally assigned to the latter part of the fifth
century, or the beginning of the sixth. In only two cases in
the present book are corrections made which appear not to be
by either A' or A^ In one of these (v. 8, for .%)
the date of the correction is uncertain, and may be quite late

the other (viii. 22) would appear to be of the fifth or sixth

century."
