Connecting to Standards Learning Outcomes

12.E.2b Describe and explain short-term and long-term interactions of the Earths components.

Use logic to reconstruct the position of large islands and continents as they appeared 220 million years ago. Draw and describe Earths layers and how they cause the structure of the earths surface to change. Understand how the interior and exterior of the Earth work together to keep the Earths crust constantly moving and how that relates to earthquakes.

Assessment Formative Assessment:

Walking around room to see if students are actively exploring Pangea puzzle and Earths structure activities. Active participation in discussions.

Summative Assessment:
Students will be asked to: Draw and label the Core, Mantel and Crust on a diagram of the earth. Write answers to writing prompt: Compare Earths crust with its interior, ( Looking for at least basic concept of Core (hot and solid), Mantle(hot and liquid), Crust (moving rock). ) What causes an Earthquake? Pressure and heat within the Earth causes tectonic plates to move shaking the earth. Quality will be based on students reading/writing abilities.

Incorporating audio/visual, kinesthetic/hands-on activities into the lesson as well as using technology. This will help English language learners better understand the concepts discussed. Graphic organizers will be provided for those needed more help on assessment.

Opening @10 minutes

BIG IDEA: The Earths Crust is constantly moving. Working Backwards: Allow students to explore Pangea Puzzle. See if students try to fit pieces together like a puzzle, then place the continents where they are today. Brainstorm if they think the continents move or not... if they do move... can you figure out where they used to be? Build interest by showing youtube video on Pangea. Allow students a few more minutes to explore the way continents possibly fit. (5 mins) Activate Prior Knowledge: Brainstorm a little about the continents and why they move. Try to focus students on structure of earth, inside and outside, heat and pressure, crust, rocks, and tectonic plates. KWL Chart (optional) Set Purpose: Brainstorm - Has anyone ever felt an earthquake? Do you think they appear randomly, or in a pattern on the earth? Tell students that there are reasons earthquakes happen in particular areas of the world and we are going to find out why. (we will be learning more about tectonic plates next week) 1. 2. Continental Drift/Pangea/Crust Structure of the Earth VOCABULARY over the course of the unit. Continental drift- The continents were joined at one time and have since drifted apart because of plate tectonics. Core- Located in the center of the Earth. Crust- The outermost layer of the Earth. Mantle- Located below the crust. Fault- A crack in earths crust found along transform boundaries.Pangaea- The last supercontinent. It started breaking up into smaller continents 200 million years ago. Plate Tectonics- Plate movements. Plates- Pieces of the crust and uppermost part of the mantle; loosely joined together to form a jigsaw puzzle over the surface of the Earth.

Core Instruction @30 Minutes

1.

Brief explanation on the earths crust - tectonic plates (will learn later, but will have maps on their desks showing the tectonic plate locations) continental drift. Overhead on the structure of the Earth. Discus general information about the core, mantel and crust. Model how to label a diagram have students label, core, mantel and crust. Explain how earthquakes occur because the pressure and heat inside of the earth force the tectonic plates to squeeze or stretch with great force Visual Learners: Show quick 33 second youtube video of what the structure of the earth may look like. Gives students a good idea of why the crust is moving. Plate Tectonics: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryrXAGY1dmE Visual/Kinesthetic leaners: Pass out play-dough and students will work in pairs or by themselves to create the earth using the structure: core, mantel and crust. Once they have made their earth they can use dental floss to slice it in half. This is a good example of the earths structure.

Closing @10 Minutes

Summarize: Put the Earth diagram transparency back on the projector (erased) go over the structure of the Earth with students to make sure they understand it. Questions: What is the difference between the core and the mantel? What is the Mantel and the crust? How do the things we have learned about explain how an earthquake is caused? Assessment: Assessment: Compare the inside of the Earth to the outside. What causes an Earthquake? All of their work will be placed in a graphic organizer.

Enrichment/E xtension

Ask students to bring home their Pangea Puzzle and ask their parents to try it. Encourage students to explain to their parents how earthquakes occur. Encourage students to find out more about the Earths structure, tectonic plates, continental drift and earthquakes. Students can research what interests them and create powerpoint presentations to present to the class.
