Introduction Evolant Solution Products Product Description General
Closures for fiber optic applications are used to protect splices on interconnecting, branching and distribution cables. Moreover, they must assure the mechanical as well as the electrical continuity of the cables as if they had not been interrupted at the splice point. This must hold true independent of the cable placement: either directly buried or in cable ducts with man-holes or in aerial cable networks. The mechanical continuity of the cables is achieved by affixing the cable sheaths, the central or other strain relief members. For protecting the installer and the electronic equipment, the electrical continuity is assured by electrically connecting the armoring and the metallic sheath elements or any metallic central members with each other or, if existing, with external grounding points.
Network Hierarchy Independent of the structure of a network, which can be designed in star / tree configuration or in ring / loop configuration, there are different hierarchy levels which require specific fiber management systems. Interconnection Level On the interconnection level the trunk or backbone cables form the direct links between central offices or between main branching points. Normally, future branching from these cables is not intended which means that future access to single splices is not planned. In this case, the standard splice tray can be used. For more comfortably - like fast access - Corning offers solutions with MFT (Multi Function Tray) splice trays. At this level ribbon cable may also be used, and closures can be supplied for this application. Branching Level Closures on this network level have to protect splices at the joints of main cables with branching cables. Also in these closures a fiber management system with multiple tray access - like MFT- is preferably used. Distribution Level These networks are planned for the present and the near future. They serve as a connection between the branching and the distribution or subscriber cables. The distribution cables are guided to termination points, like the curbs (Fiber to the Curb - FTTC) or the O/E switches of CATV networks (Optical Network Unit - ONU) or subscribers. On later demand for switching and extension, single access to each splice tray is required. This is realized with Evolant MFT- and Evolant MAX-System.

Access Networks
Part of distribution networks are also fibers of subscribers with very large volumes of highly sensitive data traffic, e.g. institutions or public authorities. These fibers require enhanced protection against interruption in the data flow. In closures of the whole network the fibers of individual subscribers are routed in separate splice trays (Single Circuit (SC) management). These splice trays allow undisturbed access to the circuits. The Evolant MAX-System with flip tray design offers compatibility with other network elements and combinations of Single Circuit (SC) and Single Element (SE) working in the same closure are possible.
Fiber Management
The fiber management is the inner design of the closure and describes the system of the organization of the buffer tubes, the fibers, and the splice trays. The fiber management has to support the level and the configuration of a network. Corning offers solutions with the following splice tray systems: Standard Splice Tray Two buffer tubes can be fixed at each of the four entries of the tray. For easier access at a future time it is recommended to store a maximum of 12 single fiber splices. The fiber excess length should be 1200 mm and is stored in the the tray. With bending diameters between 60 and 80 mm it is guaranteed that the stored fibers are free of any stress and attenuation increase. For storing the splices in the Standard Splice Tray, splice organizers are required .
Standard Splice Tray
MFT Splice Tray The splice organizer for 24 heat shrink or crimp splice protectors are fixed in the MFT splice tray. With a minimum fiber bend control of 60mm the fibers are proteced against stress, also when the fibers will be moved. Additionally, the MFT provide a real fiber management, e.g. to change the direction of fibers. Together with the multiple tray mounting access it is also possible to manage complicated network structures.

MAX Splice Tray The Evolant MAX system can be used for access network applications with either single circuit (SC) or single element (SE) trays or a mixture of both, in accordance with the network requirements. The fiber itself is guided from the fixed cable end through distribution channels and threaded into the trays directly through the rotation point of the splice tray hinge. This patented method guarantees no stress to the fibers and will prevent any attenuation increases in case of future tray access. The minimum bending radius requirement is 30 mm. Also a full fiber management system is included. The complete Evolant MAX system allows all possimark each splice tray with different numbers and colours.

Canister Closure configuration

In canister closure configuration all cables are fed into the closure on one side only. The closure body is in general formed like a canister. With excess length of cables stored preferably in a ring, the complete closure can be taken away from the storage location to a work station for installation or maintenance. Also for fiber managements installed and placed preferably in a vertical position, a butt closure configuration is of importance. Thus, butt configurated closures are mainly installed on poles of aerial lines or in manholes of duct respectively of direct buried lines.

Evolant Solution Products Product Description Closure End Caps
Two end cap designs for the UCNCP are available - mechanical cable entry or heat-shrink cable entry sealing. All end caps are provided with a feed-through for external grounding or to insert a valve for flash testing. Mechanical two-section end caps are paired with two prefabricated cable entries in the intersection for the installation of uncut cables. Six cable ports are available for branching cables sealed with silicone compression fittings. Heat shrink end caps are designed with one oval cable entry port to accomodate the installation of uncut cables and seven circular ports for the cable entry of branching cables.

Evolant MAX Fiber Routing and Management System

The Evolant MAX Fiber routing and management system is built with an aluminum frame and pre-assembled with sixfold guiding units for the splice trays. These guiding units are on both sides of the frame or individually stacked with large buffer tube storage. If the buffer storage is removed, it is easy to snap in the guiding units to enlarge the splice tray capacity. The fiber itself is guided from the fixed cable end through distribution channels and threaded into the trays directly through the rotation point of the splice tray hinge. Closure Strain Relief System

Strain relief is provided for the cable outer sheath and for the central strength member to combat mechanical forces. It is compatible with most common cables.

One raster unit is required for the SC tray and two are required for the SE tray. Two SC trays can be replaced by one SE tray or vice versa.

UCNP Universal Inline Closures

The UCNP (product family of Universal Closures) is designed to protect splices and to store excess buffer tube lengths inline to fiber optic cables. The closures are useable with all network types such as aerial, duct or direct buried networks as well as in all network levels such as interconnection, branching, distribution or access levels.

The longitudinally split closure tube is closed with two plastic bars. They are affixed by using only a plastic hammer and are secured with pins. For re-open only a plastic hammer is required. Permanent elastic longitudinal and round seals allow the closure to be opened and re-closed as often as required without additional installation material. The round seals are applied pre-cut with a joiner in order to allow installation of uncut cables or during repairs. The two end caps incorporate the strain relief absorbing mechanical forces, which may be applied to the cables from the network side. Two metal bars interconnect the two end caps. On the lower bar the fiber management system is installed. All closure sizes are available with two different fiber management systems included in the pack. UCAO Inline Closure with Multi-Function Tray (MFT)

The UCAO Closure (Universal Closure Access for Optical Cables) provides environmentally protected sealing on splices of fiber optic cables. In addition, the unit provides excellent cable strain relief and space for excess buffer tube storage. It can be installed with all common cable sheaths and is suitable for buried, duct and aerial applications. Due to its compact design, it is ideal for the connection of low to medium distribution cables. The ease of opening and closing makes this closure ideal for access networks.

Both the cable sheath and the central members are strainrelieved with clamps locked into the lower half shell. The same clamps provide an electrical connection and external grounding if required. The tightness of the closure can be flash-tested by using the optional tightness testing set.
Design
The body of the closure consists of two half shells made of plastic that is resistant against all environmental influences. The intersection of the half shells is sealed with a reusable silicone ring. The closure has an integral hinge on one side and five stainless steel and plastic tensioners on the other side. The tensioners can be closed by hand and easily opened with a screwdriver. To prevent unauthorized access, an anti-access device option can be installed on the clips. The two cable entries on each endface of the closure can accommodate cables with outer diameters of up to 21 mm. The cable entries are placed between the cable entry wedges in the lower half shell. With a four-cable entry set, including multiple strain relief and a filling piece, each cable entry can be adapted to fit four cables of up to 8 mm in diameter. Alternatively, a closure with sealing wedges, each containing one port with compression fittings, is available. The tray holder contained in each closure should be inserted into the lower half shell. It can accommodate up to six MFT splice trays with a fast and easy single tray access. The buffer tubes can be installed direct up to the splice trays. With an optinal Buffer Adapter Set the fibers from one tube can be separated to differt tubes. Or rather fibers from different tubes can be brought together into one tube. Each MFT splice tray provids 4 buffer tubes entries.

OPGW STAR Closure MFT

This metallic canister closure has especially been designed to connect and protect the fibers of Optical Ground Wire cable (OPGW cable) placed on top of high voltage power transmission lines. The closure is used to connect OPGW cables with each other or with aerial cables with plastic sheath.

Main Components The main components of the closure are the canister, the cable entry plate and the strain relief. All three parts are made of stainless steel. The canister fixed to the cable entry just by turning the closing ring. The sealing between these parts is possible through the use of a rubber O-ring. Fixing devices are available for poles and metal pylons.

5 Cable Entries The OPGW STAR Closure comes with the ordered cable entries. The cable entries are sealed with rubber inserts within the compression fittings. Addtional sets can be ordered for standard cables sizes from 4 up to 21mm and for central tubes of OPGW cable sizes from 4 up to 9mm. On the lower side of the cable entry plate there is a plug (sinter metal) which allows venting of the closure. Cable Strain Relief A strain relief set covers OPGW and standard cable diameters from 8.75 to 21.5mm. The strain reliefs consist of the tube-shaped body and a clamp with six screws. Adapters for the different cable diameters and cable strain reliefs are included. Fiber Management The tray holder can accommodate up to six MFT splice trays with a fast and easy single tray access. For the OPGW cables fan-out kits are used to seperate the fibers from the central tube into different buffer tubes. For loose tube cables Buffer Adapter Sets must be ordered. With Buffer Adapter Sets the fibers from one tube can be separated to different tubes or fibers from different tubes can be broght togehter into one tube. Each MFT splice tray has 4 tubes entries. With the world's largest range of closures, Corning offers a complete line of solutions for connecting and distributing all types of communication cable. Closures are used to provide protection for splices on straight, branching and distribution cables. The mechanical and electrical continuity provided by the closures must be as though if there had been no break in the cables at this point. This requirement applies regardless of the location of the cables, e.g. buried directly in the ground, installed in ducts or on aerial cable routes type of cable, e.g. pressurized or grease filled design of the cable, e.g. with laminated sheath or armoring. The mechanical continuity is achieved by strain-relieving (anchoring) the cable sheaths. The electrical continuity of any armoring or metallic foils in laminated sheaths is provided by a high-quality, low-resistance bond to ground bonding lines. It is provided to protect the installers and the electronic equipment from possible overvoltages which these cable elements may develop from external sources and then discharge. In addition these bonds can be connected to external grounding points. Closures are generally classified according to their design into mechanical and heat-shrink types.
Mechanical closures comprise rigid closure tubes or domes with one or two end caps for the cable en-trances.
The sealing between the closure components themselves and to the cables is made by means of plastic compounds such as sealing tapes or gels or by silicone seals. Pressure is applied to the seals mechanically, i.e. with clips, hooks or screw fasteners. Mechanical closures can be re-entered and closed as required for maintenance or system expansion purposes. The main product of this type offered by Corning is the range of Universal Closures UCN, designed specially for the pressurized primary cable network and hence to withstand maximum stressing. There are also various solutions available for the non-pressurized secondary network, e. g. within the UCA range. UCN Universal Closures UCN are designed to protect straight or branch splices on high pair count copper cables against environmental influences. The closures can be installed on cut or uncut cables and are suitable for direct buried, aerial and underground installation. They are suitable for pressurized and non-pressurized cables. UCNV Universal vault closures UCNV serve to distribute outdoor trunk cables onto indoor distribution cables within exchanges. There, the vault closures can be installed in any position in cable vaults or other spaces. The size of the vault closure to be used depends on the number of distribution cables to be led out, as well as on the number of pairs and the conductor cross-section. UCA The UCA closures are designed to protect splices at straight and branch joints on communication cables in unpressurized secondary networks. The closure can be assembled on all common copper cable types. It is suitable for cut and uncut cables and can be directly buried in the ground or installed in manholes and on aerial cable routes between and on poles as well as on walls.

Copper Closure
Heat-shrink closures comprise heat-shrinkable sleeves which are wrapped around the splice and the cable ends.
The closure is shrunk down using a gas torch to contract uniformly around the splice and the cable ends. An adhesive coating, also thermally activated, on the inside of the sleeve ensures an effective seal. There are different types of heat-shrink closures available for both the pressurized primary network and the non-pressurized secondary network.

Inline Closure UCN

Application
Universal Closures UCN are designed to protect straight or branch splices on high pair count copper cables against environmental influences. The closures can be installed on cut or uncut cables and are suitable for direct buried, aerial and underground installation. They are suitable for pressurized and non-pressurized cables.

The two-section end caps incorporate the strain relief that absorbs the mechanical forces which may be applied to the cables. Detailed installation instructions are enclosed in each closure pack. Installation requires a "Tool Case for Installation of Universal Closures UCN" which has to be ordered separately. Two metal bars interconnect the two end caps. On-site hand-drilling of the cable entries provides flexibility with regard to cable diameter, number and arrangement of the cables. During installation of the end caps, the strain-relief disks are automatically pressed by two aluminum collars onto the cables. The compression guarantees excellent resistance against push and pull. The longitudinally split closure tube is closed with two plastic bars. They are pushed on by a hammer and are secured with pins. Permanently elastic longitudinal and round sealings allow UCN: easy Installation with Clamping Bars the closure to be opened and re-closed as often as required without the need of consumables. Each UCN is equipped with test valve and external grounding device.The two half shells and the two closing parts are very tightly joined by non-corroding screws. There, the vault closures can be installed in any position in cable vaults or other spaces. Application
The UCA closures are designed to protect splices at straight and branch joints on communication cables in unpressurized secondary networks. The closure can be assembled on all common copper cable types. It is suitable for cut and uncut cables and can be directly buried in the ground or installed in manholes and on aerial cable routes between and on poles as well as on walls.

Design

Distribution Closure BPR

Applications
Closure for non-pressurized cable networks, especially designed as a distribution closure for up to 10 subscriber cables, but also useable as in-line closures for low-paired distribution cables with up to 30 pairs. Use: in manholes, in buildings, in the ground, on poles and on aerial cables.

Gland sealings for other cable diameters or configurations are available. Sealing of the low-paired distribution cables is achieved using sealing parts in combination with sealing tapes placed in the lower half shell and in the two upper closing parts. In addition one or two twists of sealing tape around the cables ensure a reliable sealing of the cable entry area. The housing of the BPR consists of 4 parts: lower half shell, two upper closing parts and one upper half shell. The lower half shell is equipped with 2 cable glands each on both sides for insertion of max. 4 subscriber cables. Glands not used are closed by means of dummy plugs which are part of the kit. Each of the two upper closing parts is designed for accommodation of 3 cable glands. That means in connection with the 4 cable glands of the lower half shell 10 cable glands in total for the distribution of subscriber cables. An upper half shell is used to cover the closure. In case of re-opening only this half shell has to be removed. The cable entry areas are not influenced. The seams between the half shells and the closing parts are sealed with a special sealing element. All the parts of the BPR housing are tightened with non-corroding screws. Heat-shrinkable Closures GSC CP, GSC C and GSC
Design
The reinforced closures have been developed to meet increased demands in cable networks. For this purpose, a PE net has been integrated in the heat-shrinkable sleeve. This considerably increases the split resistance during shrinking and its mechanical strength. The inner side of the sleeve is coated with hot-melt adhesive which guarantees a watertight and secure bonding to plastic and metal-sheathed cables. A temperature sensitive paint on the sleeve indicates that sufficient heat has been applied to the sleeve. The closure kit consists of the heat-shrinkable reinforced sleeve with closing channel, a liner or a canister, a shield connection lead and installation accessories.

Features
Heat-shrinkable Closures SCX, SCX C High split resistance due to integrated PE net Environmentally friendly sleeve composition out of PE laminate and PE net No ingress of water into the homogeneous composite material Very high mechanical strength of sleeve composite No cable strangulation due to regulated shrink force of the sleeve No overheating of cable conductors due to reduced heat during the shrinking process Insensitive to sharp flame settings IP 68 In contrast to the closure series GSC the sleeves of the closures SCX and SCX C are not reinforced. The sleeve of these closures is made of one PE layer. The inner side of the sleeve is coated with hotmelt adhesive which guarantees a watertight and secure bonding to plastic and metal-sheathed cables. A temperature sensitive paint on the sleeve indicates that sufficient heat has been applied to the sleeve. The closure kit consists of the heatshrinkable sleeve with closing channel, a liner or a canister, a shield connection lead and installation accessories.

Design
The sleeves are made of fully cross-linked polyolefin. The inner surface is coated with hot-melt adhesive which ensures a permanent and reliable sealing. In addition, the reinforced GSC R sleeves are equipped with a PE net embedded between the outer and inner sleeve layer. A flexible stainless steel channel is used to close the sleeve. This channel can be cut off after cooling down of the sleeve.
Installation
The sleeve is wrapped around the cable area to be repaired or protected. With the flame of a standard gas torch the sleeve is shrunk down onto the cable sheath.
