hyBRID enGIneeRInG
Safariland maintains one of the most advanced armor-testing laboratories in the nation. Located in Ontario, California, our laboratory tests a variety of products including ballistic, spike, edge blade, multi-threat and fragmentation resistant soft and hard armor. With the advent of the NIJ Standard-0101.06, Safariland has enhanced its laboratory facilities to include two full-length ranges that test against high-velocity handgun and rifle threats. It also features armor conditioning equipment and hard armor impact and thermal testing equipment. In addition, high-speed photography enhances the study of armor design and gives Safariland engineers the ability to build better performing, safer armor.
ReSeARCh AnD DeVeLOPMenT
A cornerstone of Safarilands armor designs is the use of trusted materials to balance the need for protection against a wide array of threats with the need for comfort and affordability. To accomplish this, Safariland utilizes hybrid armor designs that incorporate the use of woven, felted and shielded aramids, uni-directional polyethylene, and high-strength polypropylene composites. The Safariland NIJ Standard 0101.06 family of armor solutions features an array of state-of-the-art armor materials for unprecedented ballistic, fragmentation and trauma reduction.
ARMOR TeChnOLOGIeS
What makes Safariland armor different? Proprietary, patented armor designs that allow the officer to maintain mobility and stay in the fight.
Geometrics Technology Safarilands most advanced armor technology utilizes a patented process that forms overlapping geometric shapes within the armor design to create multiple zones to isolate the effects of multiple impacts. Geometrics technology provides a durable armor structure with increased resistance to perforation and trauma, along with low impact movement and rapid impact recovery following a ballistic event. Curv Framing, Solid and Strip Technology Safariland uses high-strength polypropylene composite material within the armor design to enhance the armor models ability to resist perforation and reduce backface signature (trauma). Core Matrix Technology Safariland uses multiple layers of aramid
ballistic material felted together with ballistic or polypropylene fibers to create a three-dimensional core that creates a flexible uniformed structure across the entire armor panel, along with excellent resistance to perforation and reduction of backface signature (trauma).

The Safariland Vest Check program provides law enforcement agencies with statistical data on the tested performance of its armor throughout the body armors warranted life. Vest Check is a collection of data from samples worn in the field and tested for ballistic integrity, durability, protection and comfort. The vest test data gathered from field samples help the Safariland armor engineers continue to improve and develop armor that meets and exceeds the needs of its customers.
Radial Offset Pleating Advanced technology for female armor goes

beyond the development of unstructured armor designs. These form-fit female armor designs incorporate multiple sub packs of pleats to form a contoured area for the bust. This area provides 360 protection around the bust while maintaining a high level of flexibility and comfort.
hard Armor Technology The design of hard armor plates, helmets and shields relies on both the art and science of armor engineering. The combination of materials such as aramids, uni-directional polyethylene, alumina ceramic, and fiberglass with proprietary designs and advanced manufacturing allows Safariland to produce the most advanced hard armor products in the industry.
The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) has recently introduced its latest guidelines for body armor, NIJ Standard-0101.06, Ballistic Resistance of Body Armor (July 2008). This standard is a complete revision of the prior standards, including NIJ Standard-0101.04, Rev. A, Ballistic Resistance of Personal Body Armor (June 2001), and NIJ 2005 Interim Requirements, Bullet-Resistance of Body Armor (September 2005). At Safariland, we closely followed the development of this standard and are prepared to meet and exceed it with an entire family of armor solutions that continues our legacy of protection and comfort. The NIJ Standard-0101.06 presents minimum performance requirements that will ensure body armor meets a certain level of performance and safety for the law-enforcement community. Changes to the standard noted below, including new threats and new test procedures, will result in improved protection against a wider range of threats.
