TRANSFORMED BY THE GOSPEL: LIFE, CITY, WORLD

New Years Commitments

There is something so attractive about a new year and the possibilities of a fresh start! Many of us use the last weeks of a year to reflect on and evaluate what we have experienced during the past 12 months. There have been many positives and challenges in my life. I am continually grateful for my incredible family and caring friends. Im thankful for three months of sabbatical and the fulfillment of a dream of spending time in Hawaii! As I enter into 2012 there are a number of commitments I want to make for myself personally, and also for Pacific: 1. Prayer - When I think of all the things I can do this year, I believe the most important is prayer. I commit myself to praying daily, yes for myself and those close to me, but also for Pacific and that God would give us favor in our city and make our witness powerful through His Holy Spirit, for family and friends who do not yet know Jesus, and for God to renew our city. 2. Leadership - I commit myself to investing in the development of leadership. When we believe that the Church is the hope of the world, then no sacrifice or commitment is too great. You probably agree with me that we can fill our time with so much fluff, much of it even good fluff, but my heart yearns to see Holy Spirit empowered leaders who lead passionately and courageously as they follow Jesus. 3. Growth - There are two areas of growth - ones I have control over and ones that I dont. I commit myself to consistent spiritual habits like reading Gods Word, believing that the resurrected Jesus wants to speak to me through it. While I believe in the leadings and promptings of the Holy Spirit and am incredibly grateful for them, God also regularly speaks to us from His Word. I also commit myself to a small group/life group where I experience authentic community. In case youre wondering, the areas of growth I dont have control over are the challenges, problems and pain that I experience. While I cant control these events, I can control my response and attitude, knowing that God uses all of them to grow me into the likeness of Jesus. 4. Serving - I know something shifts in me when I serve others especially the poor and less fortunate. Sometimes before Streetlight I think its too cold or wet to go out, and then I think of all the people who actually live out in such conditions. Its so humbling. 5. Witnessing - I need to tell people about Jesus. I love Him. I believe Hes the Way, the Truth and the Life and that His resurrection changes everything. God forgive me for so often keeping that life-changing and eternity-altering news to myself.

TRANSFORMED BY THE GOSPEL: LIFE, CITY, WORLD

A Church for the City

As we begin 2012, we are starting our most important message series yet. Through the month of January, were going to be looking at what it means to be A Church for the City and unpacking our vision statement Transformed by the Gospel: Life, City, World. We believe that our vision is from God, and so we need to both understand it and passionately live it out.

At the end of the series were going to invite you to commit to what is called Covenant Community: a opportunity to link arms and look each other in the eye and say were committed to this vision together. Would you do me a favor on the off-chance you miss a Sunday? Please listen to the podcast, because its important to understand the commitment were inviting you to make.

Our next Alpha Course begins on February 1st at 6:30 pm at the Granville Island Church Planting Hub (above Whet restaurant). Who is Alpha for? People who are seeking to understand who Jesus is, and if His person and claim answers the question Is there more to life than this? It is also an excellent course to help ground you in the essential elements of the Christian faith. You may not be interested in attending Alpha but let me challenge you about the people in your life who may be. Make a list of them. Pray for them and then invite them to come participate in Alpha with you.

Alastair and Julia Sterne

Please keep Alastair and Julia in your prayers as they say goodbye to their friends and family in Florida and begin the move to Vancouver. God has been going before them and led them to a great condo in Adam and Sandis building. You wont want to miss February 5 when we introduce Alastair and Julia in person and hear their story and calling!

PRAYER
That Pacific would be renewed by the Gospel and empowered by the Holy Spirit. That who Jesus is and what He has done would grip us and hold us through 2012. That Vancouver would be renewed by the Gospel. That our family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers would repent and invite Jesus into their lives. That God would give us boldness and courage to tell others about Jesus and that people would be receptive. That our next Alpha Course would help many people discover and accept Jesus. That Alastair and Julia Sterne would have a good transition and continue to experience God going before them as they join Pacific in February. That God would comfort Michael Leahy as he grieves the death of his grandmother.
