Introducing a Continuous Improved Energy Efficiency Program in MediumSized Industry Sector, under 3,0MW Total Power
Plytas Nikiforos Supervisor: Liakos Harilaos PhD Mech. Eng
The era of cheap oil comes to an end, and the climate is deteriorating. Soon we will not be able to buy and consume the same amount of energy both for cost and environmental reasons. A large amount of energy is wasted due to malfunctions. We cannot continue to waste the energy. If we want to keep the environment to a sustainable level, we must make wise and efficient use of energy. The implementation of a continuous improved energy efficiency program can act in various ways facing economic and environmental problems With proper control of the energy consumption we can achieve the same production and living standards, with less energy than before Better air quality, and improvement of the environmental conditions and raise of living standard are related to reduce of emissions Generally a mentality of energy efficient behavior can only lead to better environmental, economic and living conditions. That is the main idea that this project will try to support.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The aim of this project is to present the benefits that the implementation and use of a continuous improved energy efficiency program has in a variety of aspects. The main objectives are: Review of the best practices and results, from experiments, implementations and bibliography. Present the Worldwide, European and Greek present situation and actions towards energy efficiency.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES
Under this project, the opportunities and benefits that will derive, by the implementation of such measures in Greek industries will be examined. We will try to promote the best available methods and practices that could be easily and effectively implemented in the local industry. We must discover the most energy consuming sectors, what measures could be taken to reduce energy consumption in the most effective way as well as what are the possible obstacles that prevent some energy conservation measures to be installed DESCRIPTION

Choose an industry or an industrial sector in Greece and examine its situation. We will analyze the present industry situation and locate its special problems and needs, towards energy efficiency. If real study is not possible there will be a simulation. According to the situation outcomes, a basic methodology will be proposed, that will meet the special needs of the industry. The reasons for the methods selected or rejected will be discussed, as well as possible benefits in all aspects. (environmental, financial etc)

The project will start with a full bibliographic review describing the Worldwide, European and Greek present situation and actions towards energy efficiency. Similarities and differences among theories and projects will be discussed. Present situation of the industrial sector in Greece. What steps have been made, what are the conditions in the industry, is there any space for energy efficiency? A Real industry will be contacted and supply data. In case this cannot be held, the results will derive through statistical data, published observations and reports, and examples from other industrial sectors. The study will focus on the basic energy consuming sectors of a small industry. Lightning, heating spaces, air conditioning, consumption of basic production procedure, main mechanical and machinery equipment.
Then according to the results and the bibliographic and literature background, a basic methodology will be proposed, calibrated to the specific needs of the industrial sector (or the case study). It will not only include technical improvements, but also qualitative parameters, education, mentality of the people, motivation etc. The outcomes will be discussed critically analyzing the reasons for the selection of specific methods and actions. Why one method is preferred to another, what the results mean, can more efficiency be achieved? The possible benefits in all aspects will be discussed. Financial, environmental, cost effective, at short, medium and long term period .According to the special circumstances that exist in the industry, proper methods of efficiencies will be proposed. The reasons for this selection will be justified and the advantages and disadvantages of the approved and rejected methods relatively to our industry, will be discussed taking under consideration the previous implemented examples, theoretical background, cost

effectiveness, etc.
