ASR 4000CO

Access Switching RouterCentral Office

True Broadband Networks pose different challenges than simple enterprise networks, or broadband networks offering Internet as the only service. PacketFronts broadband solutions are purpose built for fulfilling the demanding requirements of True Broadband Networks. When many thousands of end-users have access to high capacity and triple-play services via numerous service providers, it is essential to have absolute control of the network. With regard to the specific challenges found in these networks, PacketFront offers its complete Intelligent Broadband Solution with a broad range of integrated functionalities. The solution provides unique technical features, keeps the investment and operational costs low and gives maximum flexibility to create differentiated services and increased revenues. While supporting an open access infrastructure, it also opens up possibilities for new business models.

The ASR 4000-CO series is the first router purpose-built for True Broadband Networks. It is an intelligent and dedicated device for connection and aggregation of end-users at the edge of the network. It has different types of integrated fibre interfaces and is adapted to fit in the central office premises. The ASR 4000-CO is not only transporting data, it also ensures that policies are enforced in the network. In PacketFronts Intelligent Broadband Solution, the ASR 4000-CO acts as a client in relation to BECS, PacketFronts control and provisioning system. It makes sure that service definitions specified in BECS are dynamically applied for all users. This includes everything from packet filters, bandwidth shaping and what range of IP-address to use. The ASR 4000-CO offers a number of single- and multimode fibre optical interface alternatives as well as electrical 100BaseTX interfaces. All versions also include two Gigabit Ethernet uplink interfaces. The interfaces can be equipped with a variety of single, multi-mode and 1000BaseT SFP modules. Based on PacketFronts proven ASR 4000 the new ASR 4000-CO is dedicated to be installed in the central office premises. It is standard 19 mountable and fits in ETSI 300mm Telco racks. It also has

redundant power options to ensure high availability required by network owners. To greatly decrease OPEX costs, the ASR 4000-CO is equipped with auto-provisioning features that are managed through BECS. Deployment of new units in the network, software upgrades, configuration changes and network services are also managed through BECS. This means that no local configuration of the ASR 4000-CO is required. In a True Broadband Network, services such as IP based television, telephony, radio, video, gaming and Internet will all share the same bandwidth. For this reason, the ASR 4000-CO includes functions that identify, prioritise, shape, queue and filter each individual traffic flow. When services such as IP based television and radio are offered in the broadband network, capacity and quality are key issues. The ASR 4000-CO supports native multicast and extended features that allow conditional access and increased performance. The aggregation of residential subscribers and SOHO end-users requires that the equipment in each end-user premises is given individual IP-addresses. In cooperation with BECS, the ASR 4000-CO supports the dynamic address allocation of private, public or service provider

specific addresses. This allocation is also enforced and controlled by features in the ASR 4000-CO. These include multicast source filters and traceability functions, prevention of ARP-spoofing and address conflicts. These features also play an important role in the prevention, and follow-up, of hacking and abuse. Furthermore, the flexible IP address provisioning is the basis for creation of openaccess networks. Since the network owner no longer needs to be the sole service provider, the risks, investments and costs of implementation can be shared between multiple players. With its unique features and functions, the PacketFront ASR 4000-CO will, in cooperation with BECS, enable new business opportunities, new roles and value chains that will revolutionise the broadband market.

Key benefits
Dynamic Enforcement Tailored for the specific challenges in True Broadband Networks, the ASR 4000-CO has unique dynamic interface configuration and end-user service provisioning by the decision point: BECS. In addition, it also contains specific support for hacker and abuse avoidance. Deployment and Provisioning The ASR 4000-CO supports automatic installation and configuration, which reduces installation and management costs. It also supports both automatic and manual enduser service provisioning. Integrated Fibre Optical interfaces The ASR 4000-CO does not need external unmanaged and expensive fibre optic transceivers. This is internal in the ASR 4000-CO. There are options for low-cost multimode fibre, intermediate and long reach singlemode fibre as well as single fibre models and traditional 100BaseT Fast Ethernet. Bandwidth Differentiation The ASR 4000-CO is capable of managing different bandwidth for individual services and users. This is implemented to the extent that it is possible to enforce different bandwidth to different services to the same device (MAC-address) on an interface. The ASR 4000-CO also shapes, and not only police bandwidth, which gives much better performance and accuracy than other means to limiting bandwidth. Open Access/Triple-Play Support Based on flexible IP allocation and dynamic configuration, the ASR 4000-CO fully supports multiple operators and service providers in a shared infrastructure. Traffic Management The ASR 4000-CO is tailored for transportation, classification, bandwidth management and conditional access for IP based services, such as Internet access, IP television, video, gaming etc.
