PRINCIPALS REPORT
Welcome and Happy New Year to all our students and families. It has been a smooth start to the year with students beginning their respective courses and participating in academic, physical and cultural activities. The teaching staff is particularly pleased with the 2009 HSC results. Twelve students achieved an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) of 90 and over. Our dux Jessica Qi attained an ATAR of 99.65, which admits her into Commerce/International Studies at the University of New South Wales. Approximately 80 students have received offers for university placements. As well, Rohmone Kozlovas artwork has been selected for exhibition in Art Express an honour indeed. Congratulations to all our year 12 of 2009 for their individual successes. There have been some staffing changes for 2010. Mr Murray Kitteringham, has been promoted at the end of 2009 to Deputy Principal at Bidwill High School. Mr Anthony Karam will be acting Head Teacher PDHPE for Term 1. New staff that we have welcomed to Fairvale are: Mr Alvin Mak - Teacher Mathematics Mr Matthew Budeja - Teacher Science Ms Jo Eggleton - Teacher CVTC Years 11 and 12 have had a session of study skills in Week two. Hopefully the advice, strategies and tips they received will be helpful in their regular study periods. Also, Year 7 had their Orientation to high school with their two days of activities and the program was well received by all. There is ongoing construction around the school: The School Sign at the front of Newling block has been revamped and placed near the Bini shell thank you to the P & C and Year 12 (2009) for their partial funding of this project. All seven Science labs are currently being refurbished as a result students will be the beneficiaries of a much improved learning environment. The new Language Centre is underway and already the steel frames are in place. This will be a great addition to the school when completed. Could I please ask parents and guardians to be particularly careful driving around the school perimeter. We have many construction vehicles on site and it is important that parents and guardians do not park in Zarlee Street. Please note that Zarlee Street is a private road and is for staff parking and buses only. Do encourage your children to walk to school if you live in the local area. Walking is good exercise and also eases the congestion around the school area. Students who require transportation to school can be dropped off in the Kiss and Drop Zone on Thorney Road.

Furthermore, it is important for all students to attend school everyday and be on time. The school day begins at 8.45am, and it is a good practice to aim to arrive at school by 8.30am. Parents/ Guardians can assist by first dropping off their high school children and thereafter any primary school children in their families.

Please organise family holidays in school holiday periods. Students who take time off in the school term are disadvantaged in terms of their learning and this can result in them not meeting the Board of Studies course requirements. Finally, congratulations to Carissa and Justin Holland on their success at the Wrestling Championships in Singapore. Carissa attained a bronze medal and Justin a silver medal in their respective divisions. Well done a great achievement! Principal

A Message from Fairfield Council

YEAR 12 FUNDRAISING EVENT - VALENTINES DAY 2010

As part of Year 12 school formal fundraising activities roses and balloons were sold for Valentines Day. Leading up to the day many students were involved in the ordering and selling of the goods, basically organised by Lang and Robert Tran. Two very dedicated and driven students, they must be given credit for the success of the event. Although a very big team effort on behalf of Year 12 (sorry guys, too many of you to list individually), these two students were an absolute standout. Thursday afternoon saw a team of extremely dedicated students preparing the roses for delivery on the Friday. This involved the stripping, de-thorning, wrapping and ribboning the roses to be distributed, under the guidance and expertise of Roo Quayya El Hawat. 750 roses and the inflation of 400 balloons does not necessarily sound like a lot, but it took 14 students up until 7:00pm to finish the job. Overall, Year 12 raised $1700. The teamwork and the organisation from Year 12 was amazing, and watching students step up and take responsibility was a fantastic thing to see. Many thanks to the staff and students who supported our cause and bought a rose or balloon. This definitely gave everyone the chance to spread the love whilst raising funds. Well done Year 12, we are extremely proud of your efforts. Truly a hard act to follow. Ms Plant and Mr Handley Yr 12 Advisers

Understandably, swimming is a highly specialised sport and many students find it extremely challenging, so these students need to be congratulated for their perseverance, commitment, motivation and dedication to the sport. Thank you for making the carnival a satisfying and rewarding experience for each other. These students will now compete in the Landsdowne Zone swimming carnival to be held at Prairiewood Leisure Centre on the 1st March. Zone and Regional Representation at Combined High Schools. Fairvale High Schools 2010 school leaders are looking forward to a productive year representing their fellow students; engaging with the local community and raising awareness of world issues. Our aim this year as members of the Student Representative Council is to encourage and direct the student voice says Jasmina. We are looking forward to further student involvement, whilst building upon existing student leadership skills.

HAT FULL OF TRICKS

The new King of Swing. It has been dubbed The Miracle of Burnett Street. Never before has anyone taken to a batting line-up like Fairvale High School teacher Anthony Karam. The Parramatta third grade bowler destroyed North Sydney at Merrylands Oval taking career-best figures of 7-3 off 9.4 over's. Karam started the year in fourth grade with his brother Steve, deciding to take on a mentoring role with the clubs juniors, but club injuries forced the all-rounder up into third grade. Karam is also the Fairvale High School cricket coach who recently guided the

school to its first win in six years. Pg. 5
