-----------------------------------------------------------StarOffice[tm] 8 Office Suite -----------------------------------------------------------This file contains important information about this program.

Please read this in formation very carefully before you begin. You can find the latest information on the web at http://www.sun.com/staroffice. Note: If you want to upgrade from an evaluation version to a full version of Sta rOffice, see the "Upgrading an Evaluation Version to a Full Version" section of this document. -----------------------------------------------------------Notes on Installation ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------System Requirements -----------------------------------------------------------Microsoft Windows 98, ME, 2000 (Service Pack 2 or higher) or XP Pentium compatible PC (Pentium III or Athlon recommended) 128 MB RAM (256 MB RAM recommended) 320 MB (multi-language version: 500 MB) available hard disk space 800x600 resolution (higher resolution recommended), at least 256 colors

Please be aware that administrator rights are needed for the installation proces s. Difficulties starting StarOffice (for example, applications hang) as well as pro blems with the screen display are often caused by the graphics card driver. If t hese problems occur, please update your graphics card driver or try using the gr aphics driver delivered with your operating system. Difficulties displaying 3D o bjects can often be solved by deactivating the option "Use OpenGL" in 'Tools - O ptions - StarOffice - View - 3D view'. You can install StarOffice 8 along side of an older version of StarOffice. If yo u later choose to remove the older version of StarOffice, you must call the inst allation program of the newer version and choose 'Repair'. This ensures that the new version is correctly registered in your system. Please note that copy and paste via clipboard between StarOffice 6.0 and StarOff ice 8 might not work in StarOffice format. If that happens, choose 'Edit - Paste Special' and choose a format other than StarOffice, or open the document in Sta rOffice 8 directly. Please make sure you have enough free memory in the temporary directory on your system and that read, write and run access rights have been granted. Close all o ther programs before starting the installation. -----------------------------------------------------------Updating an Existing Adabas Database to Adabas D 13 -----------------------------------------------------------Before you install the Adabas D 13 database application, you need to remove olde r versions of Adabas D from your operating system. To remove an older Adabas D a

pplication, use the corresponding StarOffice setup application. Do not delete th e database files. -----------------------------------------------------------Upgrading an Evaluation Version to a Full Version ------------------------------------------------------------ In any StarOffice application, choose Help Purchase StarOffice. Note: To purch ase a license key for StarOffice, you need an Internet connection. - If you already purchased your license key, click Next. - If you need to purchase a license key, click Get serial number, follow the ins tructions on the web site, and then click Next. - Enter the license key in the box and then click Next. - Click Finish. -----------------------------------------------------------Network Installation: Error When Calling the StarOffice Quickstarter -----------------------------------------------------------If, when starting the system, problems should occur in calling the StarOffice Qu ickstarter (for example, invalid link), this is probably due to the fact that th e network drive on which the network installation is installed is not or not yet available. In most cases, this happens when the network drives are logged in via a login sc ript, thereby establishing the connection for the network drives parallel to run ning the programs of the autostart group from which the Quickstarter is also sta rted. To avoid this problem, the network drive should be connected via the system's se rvices. If this is not possible, the link used to call the Quickstarter can be r emoved from the autostart group of the system, or the Quickstarter can already b e disabled when installing the workstation installation. If the system administr ator already disabled the Quickstarter during installation of the network instal lation, then the Quickstarter cannot be selected by the user in a later workstat ion installation. -----------------------------------------------------------Server-Based Configuration and Limited Java Functionality -----------------------------------------------------------When the StarOffice configuration is stored on an LDAP server and managed remote ly via the StarOffice Configuration Manager, the Java Environment is not correct ly initialized on program startup, and some Java related features of StarOffice do not work: - Switching off Java support in Tools - Options - StarOffice Security will only take effect after restarting StarOffice - Some network properties are not set. This may restrict Java components in perf orming network related activities. - The class path that can be extended in Tools - Options - StarOffice - Security - Classpath will not be operative. As a workaround, Java classes can be copied into the lib/ext directory of the Java Environment in use. - The Java locale will be the default provided by the Java Environment. The lang uage settings of StarOffice are disregarded. - The "Security checks" and "Net access" settings specified in Tools - Options StarOffice - Security - Java are not evaluated. Instead, Security checks are al ways enabled and the Net access is set to "Host". ------------------------------------------------------------

Important Information for Asian Versions ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Vertical Writing Support In Windows 98 and Windows Me -----------------------------------------------------------The Asian language fonts that are installed with StarOffice (AndaleSans UI and H G Mincho Light J) do not support vertical writing in Windows 98 and Windows Me. To enable vertical writing in these operating systems, choose Tools - Options StarOffice - Fonts, and then use the Replacement Table to replace the StarOffice fonts with the appropriate fonts from your operating system. -----------------------------------------------------------Important Accessibility Notes -----------------------------------------------------------Due to a problem within the Java(TM) Runtime Environment (JRE), you have to set the operating system locale (language) to "English (United States)" or "(EN-us)" . Only this setting enables you to work with programs like ZoomText. However, th is problem no longer exists in Java versions 1.5. (Note: The program WindowEyes does not work with StarOffice, because it does not support the Java Accessibilit y API.) Note: Windows users also need the Java [tm] Access Bridge For Windows Operating System 2.0 (or higher). You can download the software from one of the following web sites: http://java.sun.com/products/accessbridge/ http://java.sun.com/developer/earlyAccess/accessbridge/ -----------------------------------------------------------Windows Screen Readers -----------------------------------------------------------You can use the following screen readers with StarOffice: - Ai Squared ZoomText with 7.11 and 8.1 - Freedom Scientific JAWS 6.10 (StarOffice Writer only) Note: The JAWS screen reader operates with limited functionality in StarOffice W riter. For more information on the accessibility features in StarOffice, see http://www.sun.com/staroffice/accessibility. -----------------------------------------------------------Shortcut Keys -----------------------------------------------------------Only shortcut keys (key combinations) not used by the operating system can be us ed in StarOffice. If a key combination in StarOffice does not work as described in the StarOffice Help, check if that shortcut is already used by the operating system. To rectify such conflicts, you can change the keys assigned by your oper ating system. Alternatively, you can change almost any key assignment in StarOff ice. For more information on this topic, refer to the StarOffice Help or the Hel p documention of your operating system. -----------------------------------------------------------Problems When Sending Documents as E-mails From StarOffice -----------------------------------------------------------When sending a document via 'File - Send - Document as E-mail' or 'Document as P

DF Attachment' problems might occur (program crashes or hangs). This is due to t he Windows system file "Mapi" (Messaging Application Programming Interface) whic h causes problems in some file versions. Unfortunately, the problem cannot be na rrowed down to a certain version number. For more information visit http://www.m icrosoft.com to search the Microsoft Knowledge Base for "mapi dll". -----------------------------------------------------------Using Info-ZIP -----------------------------------------------------------StarOffice uses Info-ZIP to create and unpack the StarOffice installation, as we ll as for packing and unpacking the StarOffice XML file format. Info-ZIP program s (ZIP, UnZip and other utilities) are available free of charge and can be used in the source code and as an executable program. They can be attained by visitin g Anonymous FTP sites such as ftp.uu.net:/pub/archiving/zip/*. -----------------------------------------------------------Used / Modified Source Code -----------------------------------------------------------Portions Copyright 1998, 1999 James Clark.
