Air quality monitoring station opens


thE PhySiCS DEPArtmENt oF DE LA SALLE UNivErSity AND thE ENviroNmENt mANAgEmENt bUrEAU (Emb) oF thE DEPArtmENt oF ENviroNmENt AND NAtUrAL rESoUrCES (DENr) hAvE ForgED a partnership for air quality
monitoring on the campus and its environs. After itsinauguration last November 15, Through the partnership, anair quality monitoring station was installed near the Velasco Building (alongside Taft Avenue). The DOAS instrument is capable of measuring ozone, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and organic pollutants: benzene, toluene, and xylene. These are all air a talk on urban air quality analysis and a review of air pollution data collected in Manila was delivered by Prof. Vernon Morris, a Physics Department visiting professor from Howard University, Washington DC, USA. pollutants that must be measured under the Philippine Clean Air Act (Republic Act 8749). The monitoring of air quality provides the data required to assess compliance with current ambient guideline values which are intended to serve as goals or objectives for the protection of health and/or public welfare.

Forum tackles impacts of migration and remittances


with DLSU-AKI project coordinator Christopher James Cabuay. Reasons for migration were cited as ranging from economic asymmetries, demographic asymmetries, investment in human capital, maximization of household income, the culture of migration, to movement in natural persons. The forum also tackled how people remit to their home country for altruistic, exchange, strategic, and insurance motives as well as an arbitrage in interspatial differences in purchasing power.

About AUN/SEED-Net Established in 2001, the ASEAN University Network/SEED-Net Project is composed of 19 AUN members and 11 supporting universities from Japan. It has given scholarships to over 800 students and young teaching staff to study in masters and doctoral levels to strengthen the faculty qualifications and academic capacities of AUN members. The Network has extended its outreach from nine fundamental engineering fields to involve interdisciplinary research on the ASEAN regions common issues namely Biotechnology, Disaster Mitigation and Management, Global Environment, Natural Resources & Materials, and New or Renewable Energy.

Faculty wins National book Award

Nuncio received the National Book Award for his book Sanghiyang sa Mundo ng Internetgiven by the National Book Development Board and the Manila Critics Circle. The book explores Filipino cyberculture and critiques the ideological discourses evident in day-to-day use of the internet through blogs, social media, egroups and online games. It is published by Vibal Foundation and De La Salle University. He also co-translated Cory sa Aking Pagkakilalafrom its English version, Cory An Intimate Portrait,published by Anvil Publishing Inc. The translation bagged the St. Miguel Febres Cordero Award for Outstanding Filipino Translation given during the DLSU Faculty Recognition held lastAugust 10.

Students lead Discipline Awareness month


thE DLSU DiSCiPLiNE oFFiCE WAS rENAmED as the Student Discipline Formation
Office last October. Coinciding with this change was the Universitys celebration of the Discipline Awareness Month, with the theme for this year being 100 Years of Lasallian Excellence: Towards Another Century of Innovative Student Discipline Leadership, Formation and Advocacy. Activities related to discipline formationincluded lecture discussions and learning sessions. The activities were organized by the SDFO in coordination with different professional student organizations, the University Student Government, and other campus units. Different student groups presented various creative performances during the culminating activity of the Discipline Awareness Month on October 26 at the Amphitheater. They disseminated information on discipline-related policies to increase discipline leadership, awareness, and vigilance.

of Computer Studies hosted an open lecture entitled Emergency Management and Social Media: Convergence in Communication" at the Br. Andrew Gonzalez Hall. The lecture was just one of the many seminars hosted by the college to help heighten awareness on the role of media, technology, and communication on various issues and trends.
