CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1

Background of the Project

Today, as human being transportation become an important role for getting a comf ortable life. Human not realize that next 50 years, global population will incre ase from 6 billion to 10 million and in order aspects, the number of vehicles wi ll increase from 700 million to 2.5 billion (Husain, 1964). Car or automobile is one of the examples of transportations media. The word automobile comes from the com ination of the French word auto , which means self and the Latin word mobilis , w ving. The term car is synonymous with the understanding that the vehicle can sea t people in there and has four wheels. Designing a new vehicle involves the design and development process. Normally, e rgonomics will take place and be the main guide when the process of the designin g of the new vehicle. Packaging, or setting up the vehicle architecture, has alw ays been a fundamental element in the creation of a successful product, which is why the main objective here is to understand the package-development process fr om day one. Cars like the VW Beetle, Jeep Wrangler, BMC mini and the McLaren F1, for example, all pushed automotive design forward in their own way and still in fluences car design today. The beauty of the car depends on how we concern about the product with all our h eart in relation to the expected performance of the product. Normally, consumer always attract to a certain car related to its aesthetic value. However, this st atement is not good because aesthetic value is nearly importance as the safety o f the car, this can simplify as the ergonomics. Then, anthropometry is related t o the ergonomics factor and they play an important role in the design phase. The scenario or problems nowadays that associated with the vehicle packaging wil l be focused on ergonomics aspect in order to improve the satisfaction of consum er nowadays. During the process of car packaging studies, the literature review of the project used as a guideline. With all the data gathered, the benchmarks w ill be selected. Overall, this thesis describes and discussed the approach, deve lopment aspects and evaluation phases of new generation or new design for car pa ckaging. 1.2

Objective of the Project

This study mainly aims to study and learn the role of ergonomics and why it is i mportant while constructing car packaging. The objectives are; 1. 2. d. 3. 1.3 Study and learn the application of ergonomic in car design process. To develop 3D data of car packaging based on ergonomics factor considere Evaluation of the car packaging been developed using CAE analysis.

Problem Statement

There are a few problems with the packaging or vehicle architecture of a car. As an example; some of the commercial cars do not follow the ergonomics factor suc h as the safety and comfort of the vehicle (Jack Benton, 2005). This can influen ce the performance and comfort of the passenger during driving or sitting in the vehicle. It also can bring bad injuries for the passenger if car manufacturer t ake for granted about ergonomics aspects (Joachim Rix, 1997). This project research has been extended from the study about ergonomics design b y Burger et al. (1977). Besides that, the relevant of this research have been su pported by Matthew B. Parkinson (2006) in their technical report about Optimizin g Vehicle Occupant Packaging. The objective of the process of the packaging is u sually stated in terms of percentage of accommodation which is quantified as the fraction of the driver population achieving some targeted level of fit or comfo rt (Roe 1993). These findings indicate that comfort and safety are important fac tors to consider in the design of car packaging in order to avoid related discom fort and disorders. The problems that will be studied in this project are: 1. Understand the design of the current car packaging. 2. Explain the importance of the ergonomics when building a car packaging. 3. Study the current trend or problem of the current car design. 4. The relationship between anthropometry parameter of the drivers with veh icle packaging. 5. Application of CAE in conjunction of the ergonomics design. 1.4 Scope of the Project

Scope of this project will be covering the case study through the literature rev iew for ergonomics and vehicle packaging. The journal, technical paper, and rela ted text books will be use in the process of literature review. The scope of thi s study includes the 3D drawing data using the CAD software. Analysis of ergonom ics will be conduct. The findings will be compiling, validate and compare with t he existence data for the present car packaging. Scopes of this project are; 1. Conduct a literature review on the role of ergonomics related to car pac kaging. 2. Study on the current trend and scenario of existing car packaging. 3. Study the international standards and regulations related to car packagi ng and ergonomics. 4. Study and understand about the human factor, safety and anthropometry. 5. Establishment of benchmark for data collection activity. 6. Design and development of car packaging digital data using CAD software for comparison purpose. 7. Ergonomics analysis using the CAE software.
