Academy for Microfinance Development in Asia (AMiDA) 2010 Project Proposal

WHAT IS AMiDA (ACADEMY FOR MICROFINANCE DEVELOPMENT IN ASIA) The 3rd AMiDA, Academy for Microfinance Development in Asia, will be conducted in May 2010, and build on the successful 2008 and 2009 academies. Modeled on worlds leading microfinance academies, the unique AMIDA provides affordable international standard training and best practices to microfinance practitioners and policy makers for the Asia/Pacific market. The AMIDA, in line with its founder MICRA Indonesias vision, strives to build the local finance sectors institutional strength, capacity and outreach, and to promote innovations and transparency, to help promote access to finance for low income populations and to develop local economies. Participants come from all over the region to share ideas, learn new skills, develop their knowledge base and to establish new business relations. The event provides intensive training programs focusing on technical issues led by international and Indonesian Asia/Pacific region microfinance experts. Classes and are held in a participative environment, with brainstorming and sharing of ideas enhancing the learning experience and ensuring practical skills are developed for the long term. Since 2008, donor and corporate organizations recognizing the importance of developing local microfinance sectors to enable low income people access to finance, have sponsored participants of the AMIDA and partnered with MICRA Indonesia. These organizations are: Mercy Corps (the founder of MICRA), GTZ, Hivos Triodos, HS Micro, Rekadesa, Moris Rasik, GTZ ProF1, GTZ Aceh, UNDP, TIFA Foundation, and Micra Philippines. The AMIDA 2008 and 2009 brought together over 200 participants, including 60 international participants, from 10 different countries thanks to our many sponsors. For this, our 3rd AMIDA, we plan to partner with greater numbers of participants and sponsors and continue to offer demand driven, creative and innovative courses to help MFIs understand the market and develop ideas and solutions to address market needs. We hope you will join us.

OUR VISION AND MISSION FOR AMiDA

Our VISION is to be a leading microfinance academy in the Asia Pacific region providing an affordable, market driven international standard education program for microfinance practitioners and policy makers. Our MISSION is to provide intensive training programs to build strength, capacity and outreach in Microfinance Institutions across the region, in a sustainable and progressive way, to promote access to finance for low income people and to develop local economies.

OUR PLAN FOR AMiDA 2010

We plan to carry out our 6-day AMiDA 2010 training from May 3-10, 2010 in Bali. The Academy plans to invite around 100 participants, both local and international. AMiDA 2010 will offer 10 courses in both Bahasa Indonesia and English over a 6 day period following after the plenary sessions. The courses and plenaries are designed and will be delivered in a detailed, thorough and practical way, with a focus not only on good to know but also on how to. Courses offered in AMiDA 2010 will include: the GTZ module on Human Resources Management; CGAP courses (Business Planning with MICROFIN and Product Development, Financial Analysis, Delinquency Management and Interest Rate Setting); the Citi/WWB module on Financial Risk Management; and other modules such as Micro insurance; and a MIS course. Plenaries offered in AMiDA 2010 will include: Future trends and scenarios for Microfinance in Indonesia; Identifying opportunities, threats and challenges; Agriculture lending, Lessons learned and success stories; Operational lessons for M-Banking ; Findings on womens cooperatives in Indonesia; Disaster preparedness for MFIs; Opportunities and challenges in Islamic Microfinance. The faculty members for AMiDA 2010 will include well-known international trainers: Michael McCord (MicroInsurance Center), Naheed Islam, Don Johnston, and Natasa Goronja, amongst others, and highly reputable local trainers, M. Syafii Antonio, Grace Retnowati, Ifdol Mahyudin, Erlyn Shukmadewi, Agung Meranga, Fadri Effendy, and others.

OUR TEAM FOR AMiDA 2010

Ms. Natasa Goronja, Executive Director Micra Indonesia, started work in microfinance 13 years ago, and has worked for CGAP (Microfinance Gateway and the Donor Information Resource Center), the Microfinance Management Institute and the Microfinance Center in Poland. Ms Nagwa Kamal, Chief Operating Officer, Micra Indoneisa is an experienced investment banker and auditor and a certified CGAP trainer. Prior to joining Micra at its inception she worked with leading Indonesian investment companies. Ms. Rini Radikun worked as Regional Vice President and Access Trainer for IMPAC, a Florida based company, prior to joining Micras Technical Assistance Unit.

WHO WILL PARTICIPATE AND WHAT THEY WILL GAIN

The participants will be: Microfinance practitioners including mid and senior level managers from rural and commercial banks, savings and credit unions and coops; policy makers and funders; and key industry stakeholders, such as government policy makers, international development agencies and social investors Participants will learn practical and applicable skills and knowledge about how to develop new microfinance products and services to strengthen their own institutions and broaden their outreach. The participants will also have the opportunity to share ideas, information and learn from other countries experiences

HOW YOU CAN HELP AND WHAT YOU WILL GAIN

We would like to provide your organizations with the opportunity to support the AMiDA 2010 and therefore, the microfinance industry in the region, by sponsoring participants in the event. To prevent market distortion, sponsorship donations are partial rather than full, whilst still enabling those participants who lack financial support to attend. Sponsors also have the option to choose a specific institution type or location. By supporting this event, not only can you play a role in helping to develop the microfinance industry in Indonesia but you may also have the opportunity to: Network with organizations and institutions in the microfinance industry and gain a better picture of the market Link with some of the sharpest minds and key players in the industry, most of whom have international credentials Help build the local economy and micro-enterprises through the MFIs that you support, which can be part of your Corporate Social Responsibility programs

Support specific MFIs or organizations whose programs are aligned with your corporate mission (list of the potential MFIs to support is attached to help you choose based on their financial and institutional profiles, as well as geographical locations)

SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

MICRA invites companies and organizations to contribute and take part in AMiDA by providing scholarship to local participants @ Rp 12,000,000 per person. Through the sponsorship, you: a. Play an important role in improving and developing an MFI and also the local microfinance industry (can be aligned with CSR or CSM Corporate Social Marketing); b. Receive new updates and information about recent microfinance industry developments; c. Receive an action plan from MFIs, including performance progress from related MFIs; and d. Have your company logo highlighted on the AMiDA website MICRA believes that this will afford many benefits to the organizations attending since this is an international training event which will be attended by participants from other countries, such as the Philippines, Cambodia, China, Canada and others.

IMPLEMENTATION FOR AMiDA 2010 SCHOLARSHIP

The AMiDA scholarship terms and conditions are as follows: MICRA will provide information on pre-selected MFIs (based on certain criteria that has been agreed previously) as potential scholarship recipient organizations for AMiDA. 2. Pre-selected MFIs will fill in the application form and write down their action plan. The action plan will be reviewed in detail after AMiDA. 3. There will be a scholarship committee consisting of representatives from MICRA and the sponsor organizations to select the credible and capable MFIs to receive scholarships from the pre-selected MFIs listed 4. The scholarship will only cover the tuition fee while other fees, such as: travel, accommodation, etc will be handled by the MFI or from other funding sources. 5. The scholarship is for the ONE named person and if a scholar wishes to have a family member accompany him/her, they will be required to pay for the additional family member/s. 6. Scholarship participants are obliged to sign and abide by this scholarship contract (Terms and Conditions here within) and return a copy to the AMiDA team for its records at the start of their course and retain a copy for their own records. 7. AMiDA may use information collected regarding the scholars in AMiDA Marketing activities. 8. It is the scholar's responsibility to set a good example, e.g. strive for best results, attend classes, finish the course on time and continue to demonstrate the exemplary participation attributes/grades by which he/she was awarded the scholarship. 9. All scholars should complete their courses and only authorized postponements (requested in advance from the participants, scholarship organization, and AMiDA team) will be considered and only in exceptional circumstances, and for a valid reason. 10. The Scholarship committee is not in a position to provide information regarding the non-awarding of scholarships and the committee's decision is final. 11. AMiDA team reserves the right to investigate and possibly withdraw a person from the scholarship program, if there is adequate proven evidence of serious allegations of illegal activities discovered. 12. AMiDA team will do the monitoring and evaluation after a specific period (3 or 6 months) to check 1.

whether the MFI has already met the progress that was suggested before AMiDA in their Action Plan. Failure to do will lead to the MFI being excluded from future scholarship opportunities for any MICRA events for 2 years. 13. The AMiDA team will then make a report to the sponsors about the progress results of the MFIs.
