DISCUSSION: OPTIONS FOR STREET LAYOUT History

+ Originally South St had a double center yellow line (DCYL) + DPW marked layout for painted center islands about 4-5 years ago + Experimented using paint as a form of traffic calming to narrow lanes + Tricky due to the variable widths of South StTime Consuming (tried to obtain 11 travel lane and 5 bike lane or 6 w/ parked cars) +March 2010-Revisit pedestrian safety and speeding issues for South St y p + March 2011-Nelson NyGaard Concept +Summer 2011-DPW repainted bike lanes

Recommended
Desirable two-way cycle track width: 12 feet Minimum width in constrained locations: is 8 feet.

DrivewayandStreetCrossings Specialcarecritical
Parking protected: no-parking areas Sight triangles. Color, yield lines, and Yield to Bikes signage Channelize vehicle traffic crossings Raised cycle track: raised crossings With sharp inclines on either side from road to sidewalk

Parking lane buffer: 3 feet is the desired width (to avoid doors and collisions)

+ Travel Lane Width and Bike Lanes (separate or cycle track ?) + Separate islands/turn lane or friction travel lanes ? + Crosswalk Signage and Safety Island? + Lighted Speed Signs? +Parking

DISCUSSION TRAVEL & BIKE LANE WIDTHS Travel Lanes DPW prefers 11 feet width Add Separate Bike Lane-New South St? Double Cycle Track or Separate Bike Lanes? 25 MPH ZONE: No Parking Double Center Line Bike lane (3 TO 5) ( ) Bike Lane different color (?) 35 MPH ZONE: Parking both sides (partially) Painted Center Islands ( ) Wide Bike Lane (5)

DISCUSSION HIGHLIGHT CENTER ISLANDS OR FRICTION LANES?

TOTAL AREA: 2,075 SY of center islands on South St COST: $100 SY for ribbed concrete and excavation= $210,000

DISCUSSION CROSSWALK SIGNAGE & SAFETY ISLAND? Rectangular Rapid Flash Beacon RRFB SOLAR PED SIGNS $17,000 (PAIR)

DISCUSSION CROSSWALKS- VISIBILITY AND CURB EXTENSIONS?

Summer 2010 6 Locations DPW installed MUTCD signs ($2,650) And Paddles ($1,000) + OLD SCHOOL COMMONS + TCL (NEAR MUNROE ST) + LATHROP HOUSE + HAMPDEN ST + REVELL AVE (MISSING) +SOUTH PARK TERRACE (MISSING)

PEDESTRIAN SAFETY ISLAND?

Curb extensions shorten crosswalk length and narrow travel lane at the same time. They can be used at midblock crossings or intersecting streets (ex. Elm & Henshaw at Smith College). Expense can vary depending on drainage, existing structures and layout (estimate $10,000). State only recommends curb extensions if there is parking available.

DISCUSSION SPEED SIGNS Police Department Speed Trailer Solar Speed Sign- $5,500

DISCUSSION: PARKING (where?)

No Parking (At All Times) Can be donejust takes time: Would require an Ordinance change Through the TPC, City Council and Ordinance Committees (process would take 4-6 months)
