Listening exam overview prep information ENGLISH 3061- Language to Inform The exam

You will view a short documentary, during the viewing you will take notes. Following the documentary, you will be asked a variety of questions and asked to share your opinion. ese are the kinds of questions that may be present on the examination
Subject- what is the subject of the 2ilm? You must use direct evidence from the 2ilm to support your answer. Purpose- what is the purpose of the documentary? To inform? explain? in2luence? Support your answer. Film Techniques -- lighting/ setting/ camera techniques (closeups etc) Effective speaking techniques (clarity, tone, pace) -- how are the used in the 2ilm to support the 2ilms purpose? Analyze a speci2ic scene and its impact on you. What does the 2ilms title have to do with the subject? How does the documentarian organize the information in the 2ilm? Is the documentary biased or fair?

When writing an exam you must WRITE CLEARLY and LEGIBLY! You must use full sentences. Correct spelling and grammar! Dont rush. Read the questions rst. Support your answers and claims with evidence from the lm. Never make a claim without support. Examples= more marks!! How do I study? Come to class! Go to the course website, read your notes from class, watch documentaries on your own and try to answer the questions above. View the documentary clips on the course website. You will read two news articles, and answer questions on them. Finally, you will write a very short informative report using one or both of the previous articles as your source. ese are the kinds of questions that may be present on the examination
Subject- what is the subject of the article? Use details from the article to support your answer Purpose- what is the purpose of the article? To inform? explain? generalize? in2luence? Support your answer. What kind of pattern of organization is used? Comparison/contrast Cause and effect Chronological Explanation Which article seems more valid? Find facts and opinions State your opinion on a question that the article or articles pose. You must support your viewpoint with facts from the article. Identify faulty logic in the articles. Is it a fair or balanced article?
