Rick Shepas Head Football Coach Waynesburg University I would like to take the time to thank you for

the opportunity to speak today and represent Waynesburg University as well as our Jacket Football Program. Today over the course of the extensive sessions, I would like to present our philosophy on developing the Quarterback position at Waynesburg University. From: 8:30-9:20 SESSION #1: Preparation of a Quarterback & Play Caller Base Throwing Progression: Developing Arm Strength Base Footwork Progression: Getting Loose (Pre-Practice) 9:45-10:35 SESSION #2: Throwing Progression: Developing Touch and Accuracy as a Passer QB Footwork: Developing Movement with in the Pocket 11:00-11:50 SESSION #3: Basic Pass Game Philosophy vs Odd, Even and Man Coverage Progression Read Philosophy: NCAA ROUTE vs 7 Base Cover Looks QB vs ODD QB vs EVEN 3 Weak 2 Deep 3 Strong Cover 4 Rumble Weak Cover 6 Rumble Strong I think as we progress through the next three hours you will get a feel for why we have developed what I would consider a complete philosophy for developing Quarterback play at the both the High school and college level. Roll Highlight Tape at This Time

BEGIN SESSION #1 8:30-9:20 SESSION #1: Preparation of a Quarterback & Play Caller Base Throwing Progression: Developing Arm Strength Base Footwork Progression: Getting Loose (Pre-Practice)

Characteristics of a QB Mike Vick/Pat White VS Phillip Rivers/Kurt Warner

How we want the quarterback to think year round!! In the off-season (Include both Film Study and Weight Training) Pre-Season- Which in College Ball is both Spring Ball & Fall Prep o Power Transfer (prepare to throw 200 balls per Practice) o Prepare With Footwork Progression (No Strains or Pulls) o Develop the Understanding that a Quarterback has to break down the workload into 4 or 5 categories. Weight Training Throwing Progression Stationary Throws, Check Down Drills etc (Show Throw Progression Cut-up) Footwork Progression Bag Work, Escapes, Pocket Movement, Drops (Mechanics) (Show Footwork Progression Cut-up) QB/Receivers: Route Time Up(Short to Deep, and Situations) Sometimes Full Routes/Sometimes Last Phase for both

In-Season- Game Week Prep: Get the Game Plan In Early/Especially New Adjustments. SUNDAY o Prepare Opponent Cut Ups o New Route Concepts/Adjustments o Make that anything new or adjusted is practiced everyday o Manage QBs Arm: Number of throws in a week (Have a season plan)

In Game- Recognition and Communication between QB and Play-Caller

o How is the Opponent Playing Us No Cover Area- Underneath Cover Deep/Snug Coverage by Situation- Odd/Even/Man Answer List: How many answers do we have in the game plan to deal with any situation that we will face.

GAME MANAGEMENT!! Protect the Football No Picks Any Gain is a Positive Play Never Take a Sack (stay out of tough down & distance calls) Throwing the ball away is a positive play Clock Management

BEGIN SESSION #2

9:45-10:35 SESSION #2: Throwing Progression: Developing Touch and Accuracy as a Passer QB Footwork: Developing Movement with in the Pocket (w/o the Ball) (Show Throw Progression) On your Butt Feet Spread Apart Both Knees *One Knee On two Feet *Straddle Feet At you side *Transfer Step 10 yds. transfer 15 yds. transfer 20 yds. transfer etc Continue working on touch and flight of the ball. (Turn the Ball Over) On a String Circle Toss Bucket Toss Goal Post Throws Location Throws Check Down (Shep) (Mich) Jet Check Down

While the Tape is rolling with demonstration of the drills that have been discussed we want to emphasize the small fundamentals that we are constantly talking to the Quarterbacks about: How we hold the ball, the angular positioning of our arm in

relationship to the rest of our body, follow threw to finish, accuracy and touch. Why good mechanics are important. (We work exclusively on the pass game which means that a QB should expect to throw about 200 balls a day minimum. Over time mechanics will play a major role is the overall good health of the QB as he progresses through both the practice week and throughout the season.) You must have a plan to manage your QBs arm and the QB must be conscious of what is expected year round.

Noose: To Develop our philosophy on accuracy and to determine what is open to us in our offense. (Show Slide if available) Round-Up: To Develop throwing the vertical ball!! (Show Slide if Available) Goal Line Fade: Philosophy on throwing the red zone fade. (Location, Location) On Air Throws (Part of Practice Plan Indy Drills) Qb with Wrs Qb with RBs and TEs Qb with Wrs-Combination Throws Jet Pass Zone Blitz Routes (Show Footwork Progression) Footwork executed during the practice plan should simulate game situation. Develop a plan that fit into your weekly practice plan that will give your QB the confidence in the pocket and create a realistic pocket movement. Drops/Band Drops Step Outs/Step Backs Elway Drill 5 Bag Drills 3 Bag step outs Underneath Escapes Sprint Draw Escapes Option Drill

BEGIN SESSION #3 11:00-11:50 SESSION #3: Basic Pass Game Philosophy vs Odd, Even and Man Coverage Odd Cover Anytime you are talking about read progressions, the safety position will be in the foundation of the cover look. We try to take it one step further by making a quick check at the point of attack. The positioning of the SAM Backer for today is going to be significant in determining an Odd or Even Coverage if you can get a quick look. We are thinking ODD coverage if the defense ends the pre-snap with a single safety in the middle of the field. So for us 3 deep or man, we treat it odd. Now when attacking odd coverage, we are looking to identify flat defenders on each side of the ball. Depending on the route, QB can take a numbers advantage or use progression. Even Cover Quick check SAM Backer, find 2 Safeties on top. Now determine safety depth!! High Safeties, attack the strong side with High/Lows. Dont forget about the boundary corner. He is a potential blitzer. 2nd scenario: Quick check SAM, 2 safeties on top at funnel depth. Now we are thinking cover 4. Again identify the boundary corner. Work to strength or numbers. In our open game, against cover 4 we are looking for match-ups. Man Cover Run and Rub

Progression Read Philosophy: NCAA ROUTE vs 7 Base Cover Looks QB vs EVEN QB vs ODD 3 Weak 2 Deep 3 Strong Cover 4 Rumble Weak Cover 6 Rumble Strong The biggest question that you have to ask that prospective QB is: What is open to you? After that, its all about the Quarterbacks ability to move the defensive secondary with his eyes. Active Eyes
