In this image-conscious world, the opportunities available in hairdressing are endless. Successful hairdressers can take their pick from many top jobs, including tending to the looks of the rich and famous. How many jobs give you the chance to be creative and try new things each and every day?

How can I succeed as a hairdresser?

Some of you will have known since you were young that you would like to be a hairdresser or barber. Others dont get into it until much later.
Page 7

Page 10

How much will I earn?

Payment during training can be low, and the chances are that your wages will remain relatively low when you first start work. Once you are qualified as a stylist/barber, your pay will increase. You can also usually earn commission.

What is the national minimum wage?

For further information visit www.habia.org and click on Menu>Your Industry>Hair> National Minimum Wage

What is commission?

?
Page 11

Commission is something that hairdressers may earn on top of their wages. It is usually performance-related and is individual to each salon. You may earn commission on the amount of products you sell each week, and a proportion of the income from the number of clients you have.

What sort of hours am I expected to work?

Hairdressing salons and barber shops have to open when clients want to have their hair done. So be prepared to work late nights and weekends. Your exact working week will be agreed with your employer within the working time regulations.

Earning potential
There is really no cap on what you could earn. It all depends on how hard you want to work. The skys the limit once you have completed your training. Its all about how ambitious you are and how far you push yourself. There are lots of opportunities in the world of hairdressing.

Information you may find useful

After qualification
Once you have qualified, you will find there are plenty of chances to gain further qualifications and experience, all of which will help you improve your portfolio of skills and increase the opportunities available to you in your career.

Other options
Many people in hairdressing also go on to work in sales, marketing, public relations and photography, whilst others choose to concentrate on the business aspects of running a salon rather than working behind a chair. Finally, if you have enough experience, you can choose to go into education, working as a trainer or lecturer to pass on your knowledge and skills.

Page 15

Hairdressing overload
Rather than trying to be all things to all people, you can specialise in the qualifications you do. For instance, you may choose to specialise in barbering, African type hair, colouring, long hair or hair extensions.

Looking after yourself

As a hairdresser or barber your hands are essential tools for the job. Hairdressers are at risk of contracting dermatitis. Remember, always wear gloves when applying or removing chemicals.

Further guidance can be found on skin care and glove use at: http://hse.gov.uk/skin/information.htm
Page 16

Why is it important to look after your hands?

Your hands are an essential tool and can become dry, sore, and inflamed because they are frequently in contact with water, shampoo and chemicals.

How can I avoid getting sore hands?

Ensure that you rinse and dry your hands properly after each shampoo. Use barrier cream and moisturise them regularly.

My feet are killing me

Hairdressing involves a lot of time standing. It is important to wear a comfortable, full shoe to help prevent aching legs, sore feet and avoid any risk of injury from sharp tools such as se shoes a T he re scissors. Through bad posture, there is also a risk of long-term problems to the neck, shoulders and back. To help avoid this happening, stand with your legs straight and feet slightly apart to maintain even balance of your weight.

Trevor Sorbie The Bridal Hair Book

The book contains 15 bridal looks and illustrates them in six stepby step photographic sequences. The key theme of the book is modern weddings: not all girls get married in white or have long hair or are European - yet almost all bridal features in magazines and existing books (including ours) feature white girls in traditional white. This book will feature short hair as well as long, black, white and Asian women and a range of styles from a new version of a traditional long hair up, through to short hair, hair extensions, dreadlocks/twiglets, and wefts. It will look edgy and modern, but will be about commercial hair, looks you can sell in salon. All the looks are cross-referenced to a glossary of accessory items.
