OKANAGAN COLLEGE COURSE OUTLINE WINTER 2011

COURSE: INSTRUCTOR: Office: Phone: e-mail: Biology 121: Biology For Science Majors Dale Donovan C212 762-5445 Local 4705 ddonovan@okanagan.bc.ca

COURSE DESCRIPTION: A continuation of BIOL 111 with an introduction to the biological concepts necessary for second year biology. Topics include the physiology of reproduction, gas exchange, inter-organ transport and inter-organ coordination in plants and animals, and excretion and movement in animals. Ecosystem, population, community and behavioral ecology are discussed. TEXT (available in the bookstore) Campbell, N.A., and J.B. Reece. 2008. Biology: Eighth edition. Pearson Benjamin Cummings Publishing Company Biology 111/121 Lab Manual PREREQUISITE: Biology 111 LABORATORY SESSIONS: The laboratory component is an essential part of the course. Students will be expected to attend each entire lab period and to bring their lab manuals and textbooks. Some labs will reinforce and elaborate on lecture material. Other labs will present material which is best learned in the lab and will not be covered in lecture. EVALUATION Term Exam 1 Term Exam 2 Optional Assignments Final Exam (comprehensive) Term paper Laboratory Grade 15% 20% 1% each 25% (minus the number of optional assignments) 10% 30%

A number of optional Assignments will be handed out during the term. If you want to use these assignments for marks, you must complete the assignments (yourself!) and hand them in on the due date. The number of assignments you hand in will be used for marks and will reduce how much the final exam is worth. The exams must be written at the scheduled time. Exams will cover all course lecture material and assignments to date. The final exam is comprehensive. You must have a doctors note if you miss a scheduled exam. Final grades will be assigned as percentages. The Okanagan College Calendar provides letter grade equivalents. Normally, if either the lab or lecture component is failed, the maximum grade possible will be 49%. Students missing exams may be excused from the exam only with a written medical excuse or written compassionate leave excuse.

PLAGIARISM: Plagiarism is a serious academic offense. The OC calendar provides you with a definition of plagiarism. Essentially, it is presenting someone elses work or ideas as your own, either intentionally or not. Unintentional plagiarism usually results from poor reference citation practices or group work that is not acknowledged. Intentional plagiarism is intentionally trying to pass another persons work or ideas off as your own. The following lists the topics, in sequence, which will be covered this term. You are responsible for reading the material listed below; please read it carefully. The quizzes and exams scheduled below will cover our class discussions as well as assignments and reading material.
