2011DanGoodman Thisworkistheseventhinaseriesofarticlestheauthorhaswrittenonblunders madebytheSupremeCourtoftheUnitedStates.Originally,hedecidedtowriteon onlytwomistakesmadebytheSupremeCourtoftheUnitedStates.However,the authorreconsideredafterwritingaboutthethirdblunderoftheSupremeCourtof theUnitedStates,tonotplaceanylimitonthenumberofblundershefindswiththe SupremeCourtoftheUnitedStates. TheseventhblunderoftheSupremeCourtoftheUnitedStatesisinthecaseofthe SlaughterhouseCases(83U.S.(Wall.16)36,1873).Theblunderoccursatpage74, wherein,itiswritten: Toremovethisdifficultyprimarily,andtoestablishaclearandcomprehensive definitionofcitizenshipwhichshoulddeclarewhatshouldconstitutecitizenshipof theUnitedStates,andalsocitizenshipofaState,thefirstclauseofthefirstsection wasframed. AllpersonsbornornaturalizedintheUnitedStates,andsubjecttothe jurisdictionthereof,arecitizensoftheUnitedStatesandoftheStatewhereinthey reside.... Thenextobservationismoreimportantinviewoftheargumentsofcounselin thepresentcase.Itis,thatthedistinctionbetweencitizenshipoftheUntiedStates andcitizenshipofaStateisclearlyrecognizedandestablished. NotonlymayamanbeacitizenoftheUnitedStateswithoutbeingacitizenofa State,butanimportantelementisnecessarytoconverttheformerintothelatter. HemustresidewithintheStatetomakehimacitizenofit,butitisonlynecessary thatheshouldbebornornaturalizedintheUnitedStatestobeacitizenofthe Union.
