MOST Speeding up For future in-car infotainment systems, high-speed communications networks such as MOST150 are necessary. However, with increasing information data, even higher data rates in the gigabit per second range might become of interest. Alpine, together with Stuttgart University, presented an investigation and simulation of high-speed gigabit transmission for POF-based MOST networks. Several solutions for meeting this challenge are possible, proving that gigabit per second transmission over plastic optical fiber (POF) can be achieved. In addition, the new working group 412.7.1 inside the DKE (Deutsche Kommission Elektrotechnik Elektronik Informationstechnik) as well as KDPOF presented proposals to reach a data rate of 1 Gbit/s or more. The Way Ahead The development of new functions and features, speed grades and physical layers has always been driven by the MOST Cooperation, collecting the real market requirements of a broad community. Concerning the absolute speed grade for the future, technically, the range of 1 to 5 Gbit/s has been investigated already. certain video streams over the requirements have to be looked at. The first focus is on performance and innovation of the migration of features from consumer electronics such as Internet (Universal connectivity, radio and and video, UPnP online Plug-n-Play), But the important questions are: What does the automotive market really need? And, even more essential, what is the overall system cost, including an and automotive-grade connector system? network Some interface controller, physical medium boundary conditions are clear already: the bit-rate will be beyond 1 Gbit/s, both the optical and electrical physical layer will be available, and of course, MOST will stay a synchronous network providing a payload efficiency of nearly 100 percent, with the ability to seamlessly transport IP packet data. MOST150 Switch Matrix for Testing Various Telematic System Configurations

Mercedes-Benzs MOST Technology based telematic systems consist of various control devices and subcomponents, depending on the features selected and existing market conditions. These include market specific applications such as satellite radio in the USA or HDTV in Japan, as well as customer selectable options such as high-end sound or rear seat entertainment. The MOST150 devices are connected together in a ring topology, whereby the respective position of the individual device depends on the vehicle series. The resulting number of possible MOST150 telematic configurations corresponds to a multiple of the number of necessary test runs to cover all possible connection In close cooperation and with the The MOST150 switch matrix enables construction of a test bench for testing various configurations. This leads to automatic test runs without manual intermediate steps with a duration of up to 5 days. Another use case is, for example, to change the ring position of a MOST logging or stress tool, which means an advantage in thorough error analysis. Safer Driving with Driver Assist Systems

Comprehensive Look into the Integration of Driver Assistance Systems into the Gross Network Vehicle Driver assistance systems are about to conquer the market. The latest studies predict a growth from 9 to 62 million units per year throughout the years 2005 to 2012. Driver assistance systems are on their way to becoming an integral part of the vehicle with interfaces to many different clusters of electric/electronic systems in the car. Comparable to the human body, numerous functions have to be implemented and networked: sensors like for example radar, cameras or ultra sonic processing units and actuators like steering, brakes, ESP and airbag. Taking into account the complexity of the use cases and the different vehicle areas that have to exchange information, it is obvious that an adequate network infrastructure is of essential importance for the efficiency of the system. From a functional point of view driver assist systems have started to enlarge the functional range of classical infotainment systems. about 10 to 15 years ago, one can find With the increasing spread of driver assistance systems, more and more questions come to the fore on the technical and commercial optimization potential of the complete system architecture. Infotainment and driver assistance have an equal need for cost efficient gross building blocks from which subsets can be derived for different vehicle classes, expansion stages and special edition packages. In doing so, the layout of the functional packages, the partitioning of the functional packages in respect to the system components, and the networking of the components have to be examined. Comparing the needs of driver assistance to those of the infotainment world amazing analogies. The infotainment system components were then made up of radio and first TV receivers, amplifiers, telephones, navigation processors and voice control systems. The challenge lay in a suddenly strongly expanded functionality with equally undefined interfaces. The overall system was fragmented indeed, but at first it was arbitrarily difficult to connect the system components due to a lack of both an appropriate transport medium and standardized interfaces (APIs). This was the hour of birth of the infotainment networking via MOST. Considering the classical domains of electric/electronic architectures in vehiAs already mentioned, the analogies in the assignment of tasks for infotainment and driver assistance are enormous. This is particularly true on the networking cles it easily becomes clear that with the introduction of driver assist systems, a new, to date non-existent domain has to be created. And instantly the question arises, which network technology might be suited for that new domain. Does one of todays existing technologies - CAN, FlexRay, LIN or MOST have the potential to accomplish the task at hand? Or does it require another show of strength to introduce a technology not yet established in the car environment?

possible extent. And like in an infotainment system, the functional system model can be used for internal device communication so that for the application it does not matter whether the communication partner is sitting in the same control unit or connected across the network. The flexibility of the MOST network has already been proven: differing topologies such as star, chain and tree are equally possible, as are diverse physical layers: polymer optical fiber (POF), coax based electric physical layers as well as shielded or unshielded, twisted copper cables (STP/UTP). The MOST150 Specification Rev. 1.0 for the electric physical layer for MOST150 via coax cable has recently been released. Both physical layers are fully compatible. Depending on the grade of safety relevance, an level. The MOST network currently has three speed grades, 25, 50 and 150 Mbit/s and optical as well as electrical physical layers. For the field of assistance, adaptations in details are necessary, but these will only be expansions to a proven and tested network. The basic principle fits completely: sufficient high bandwidth at justifiable cost, excellent robustness in vehicles proven in more than 110 car models with MOST within ten years of field experience and an extremely stable basic structure for the standardization of application interfaces. An adequate functional system model like MOST offers a method of handling the complete driver assistance system. Special attention here applies to the consistency of the procedure down to hardware realization. To allow for information exchange amongst functional blocks, the functions analog to the infotainment world will be realized on control devices and control devices are connected by MOST. Without breach the The latest generation MOST150 already fulfils the requirements to the greatest Harald Schoepp (SMSC) functional system model will be realized on the communication level, and in doing so the relevant technical features for the driver assistance system will be addressed. adequate safety software layer that was not needed in the infotainment domain has to be added to one or the other application. MLX75608 has received MOST25 full performance. The new Melexis MOST25 FOT MLX75608 has a SOIC 24-pin footprint, and is identical to the Melexis MOST150 FOT in SMD. Standardization of the SMD package www .melexis .com for MOST25 is underway in the MOST physical layer working group. MLX75608 includes several salient new features, such as a two step wake-up process, and a status pin for the receiver. This pin is only put on low when the following two conditions are met at the same time: the modulated light is received and the received data rate is within the operation frequency range. Melexis expects to achieve full qualification around the end of this year.

Preparation for Serial Production of MOST150 FOTs

Serial production of the first car including MOST150 is coming closer and Hamamatsu Photonics fiber has delivered MOST150 optical

transceivers for the D-sample phase to its customers already. In this preseries production the semiconductor and assembly processes were further improved, testing and packaging issues were discussed and fixed, and other APQP tasks were finished, such as ppm target verification and process and machine capability evaluation. The fully automated serial assembly lines for the MOST150 transceivers are installed into a newly bought production building and the production staff is educated. While everything is being prepared for start of production, some remaining technical challenges are solved step by step. New developments and technologies always contain the risk of finding technical phenomena which were not known yet, but with its long experience with and deep knowledge of the semiconductor and assembly processes, such Hamamatsu Photonics in www .hamamatsu .de has approached, analyzed and solved issues continuously cooperation with its customers. Both FOT packages that are described in the MOST specification will go into serial production: the SMD package and the THM package. Both versions provide easy automated handling and support reflow soldering processes.

The new version 7.6 of CANoe.MOST offers developers and system integrators significantly improved filter options in projects with MOST150. Use of the VN2640, the new Vector Interface for MOST150, enables precise time stamps as well as direct access to the Electrical Control Line (ECL). CANoe. MOST 7.6 the simulation and test tool from Vector offers MOST users significant efficiency gains in their everyday work. The new versions revised Trace Window has a nearly unlimited event buffer. Users can now set up filters directly in the Trace Window by drag & drop; these filters quickly reduce the flood of data in the display, limiting it to just specific messages of interest. In addition, the VN2640 the new MOST150 interface from Vector provides ideal bus access. Precise time stamps for all events and low latency times enable accurate time representation of events on all channels. In gateway applicawww .vector .com/most/ tions, e.g. with CAN, the time stamps of CAN and MOST messages are synchronized, permitting exact measurement of routing times. It is also possible to access the Electrical Control Line (ECL) using CANoe. MOST and the VN2640. Synchronous display of the ECL signal, together with other MOST messages, provides valuable information for detailed analyses. Free programmability of ECL access lets users stimulate ECUs and evaluate ECU responses, eliminating the need for costly additional hardware solutions.
