as good results, acquisitions, buy back or de-listing in a weak market. Volumes for some of these companies have surged manifold due to interest on the part of short-term traders and arbitragers; they make small profits by entering and exiting the counters on a daily basis. For example, TTK Healthcare zoomed 38 per cent to Rs 565, accompanied by a significant jump in turnover in the past one month, after reported upbeat earnings. The management also said that revenue would double by next fiscal year on the back of ongoing expansion of production lines. What sends alarm bells ringing is the low delivery percentage volume for some

of these stocks. The delivery percentage for TTK Healthcare, Hercules Hoists and Kothari Products fell to as low as 5-9% in the past few sessions. Deven Choksey, MD from KR Choksey Securities said, If the delivery-based volumes drop and intra-day volumes go up, it is a concern and is bad for the market. While some of the shares could have seen genuine buying interest based on strong fundamentals, there could be some amount of speculation in others. Mehraboon Irani, Principal and Head Private Client Group from Nirmal Bang Securities said, Multi baggers are always created from small companies. However, investors should beware of chasing stocks which rise without understanding the fundamentals of the company. Kishore Ostwal added, Investors should always look at the valuation price to earnings or price to book ratio, before investing. If the stock has run up and valuations are not justified, it can be an expensive bet. Additionally, not all stocks have had a decent run-up with an increase in daily average turnover. Some of the stocks have given negative returns; Mukand Ltd., manufacturer of stainless steel, declined over 3 percent even though it was one of the top traded stocks on the Bombay Stock Exchange.

Delayed capacity expansion, increasing coal and wage costs are likely to impact margins and keep the stock price under check

teel Authority of India Limited (Sail) touched a 27-month low of Rs 116.10 on Tuesday on the back of 29% dip in net profit to Rs 838 crore for the first quarter ended June 2011. The average realisation for the quarter increased 4.5% year-on-year (y-o-y) and 3.2% quarter-on-quarter (q-o-q) to Rs 39,313 per tonne, reports suggest. A 19.6% rise in volume on y-o-y basis helped the company clock in higher revenue of 20%. However, on a sequential basis, volume at 2.75 million tonne (MT) declined by 12%. Increasing coal costs, higher dearness allowance (DA)-linked wage costs and rising fuel expenses led to margin compression. As a result, the earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (Ebitda) declined to $97 a tonne, compared to $149 a tonne in the previous quarter and $163 a tonne in the year-ago period. The q-o-q Ebitda decline was mainly due to higher-thanexpected employee and power costs and the overall cost push from higher cokingcoal prices, notes a research report from Daiwa Capital Markets.

MARGIN PRESSURE
The margins are expected to remain under pressure as the full impact of higher coal costs will be seen from the second quarter. Analysts at Bank of AmericaMerrill Lynch observe that Sail may provide for wage hikes for nonexecutives due January 2012, impacting employee costs and putting margins under further pressure. Moreover, the management has guided for flat volumes in FY12. The company plans to expand its saleable steel capacity from 12.6 MT in FY11 to 20.2 MT by FY15E. However, the pace of expansion is slow. The Bhilai steel plant, which is the most profitable of the Sail plants,
reported 10% lower production (1 million tonne versus 1.1 million tonne earlier), says Nomura report. The management has guided that production should pick up during the quarter and this plant should be back to its normal operations. Even at Bokaro steel plant, the production was disrupted due to problems with coke oven batteries. As a result, the coke had to be purchased externally, leading to an increase in cost of production. The company expects normal operations to resume in Q2FY12.
OUTLOOK
PINC Research observes that persistent delays and cost overruns have led to a rise in capex costs by around $1200/tonne. Analysts reckon that though the 2 million-tonne-per-annum (mtpa) Rourkela blast furnace may start functioning by FY12-end, the integrated steel plant at Rourkela will commence operations only by mid-FY13. The expanded steel production from the IISCO plant in West Bengal will commence around that time. In this backdrop, analysts have cut volume estimates to 12.4 MT in FY12 and 13.7 MT in FY13. Given all these concerns, out of a total of 38 recommendations available on Bloomberg in the last one month, only 34% analysts recommended a buy on the stock and 66% maintained a Hold / sell rating.

hishir Bajpai and Vinay Khattar remained immune to the sharp market fall in the last five trading days. The relative outperformance can be attributed to their investment in Inventure Growth & Securities, which zoomed nearly 80 on debut today - August 04. The Smart Portfolios benchmark, the S&P CNX 500 index, portfolio value declined over 3 per cent to 9.50 lakh, while Bajpai saw a minor cut of 0.6 per cent in net worth, and Khattar logged a gain of 1.5 per cent. Ajay Parmar, however, who remained on the sidelines, registered a loss of 2.8 per cent in the last five days. The two active fund managers - Bajpai and Khattar took a diverse route this time around. While the former continued to churn his portfolio and remain fully invested, the latter preferred to raise his cash levels. For more details log on to smartinvestor.in/sp

eliance Industries' prized KG-D6 gas fields have seen output drop over 27% to around 47 million standard cubic meters per day in June, the Oil Ministry said. "Production from KG-D6 field reached 60 mmscmd (in 2010). However, from December 2010, the production started declining and for the month of June 2011, the average production from KG-D6 field was around 47 mmscmd," the minister of state for petroleum and natural gas R P N Singh told the Lok Sabha. In written replies on KG-D6 fields, Singh said the government had in 2006 approved an investment of $8.8 billion in two phases in developing Dhirubhai-1 and 3 gas fields in the KGD6 block (Phase-I: $5.2 billion and Phase-II $3.6 billion). Dhirubhai-1 and 3 (D1 and D3) fields were estimated to have a life of 13 years
with peak natural gas production envisaged at 80 mmscmd. "The average gas production from the KG-DWN-98/3 (KG-D6) block during April-June 2011 is 48.60 mmscmd, which is less than the approved field development plan (FDP) rate of 70.39 mmscmd," he said. This production is made up of output from D1 and D3 and MA oil field in the block. The MA oil field produces about 8 mmscmd of gas while the rest comes from D1 and D3.
A local court rejected the bail pleas of prime accused in the multi-crore accounting "fraud" in Satyam Computers, B Ramalinga Raju and seven others. The accused had sought bail on the grounds that the Satyam trial was not completed by the stipulated time of July 31 and all prosecution witnesses were examined. Earlier, cancelling Raju's bail last October, the Supreme Court said the accused may file bail plea only after July 31, 2011 if the local court trial is not over till then.

Japan joined Switzerland and sold one trillion yen ($12.6 billion), while its central bank eased monetary policy. These are efforts to tame currencies buoyed by safe-haven demand from investors fretting about the health of global economy. The intervention in Asia and London pushed the yen well beyond 79.50 yen to the dollar, a two week low, from around 77.10. Tokyo's action followed days of official warnings that the yen rise could derail Japan's recovery from the tsunami destruction.

The trading pattern indicates significant short-covering below 5,360; at the same time strong support is seen around 5,240
he Nifty August futures opened on a positive note, faced resistance at 5,440 and closed below a crucial support level due to selling by other time-frame traders. We had hinted in this column yesterday a strong possibility of testing extend support at 5,350 and a resistance above 5,436. The August futures settled at 5,340 after consolidating around 5,415 on concerns that rising rates may stall economic expansion and reduce corporate earnings. The market undercurrent remained weak and intraday fall from the days high of 5,440 can take the August futures around 5,241. The August futures may face strong resistance above 5,415-5,440 as the other time-frame traders were net sellers in that range. The market profile for the day suggests responsive selling as index opened within value area (5,360-5,425) and made an attempt to trade above the value area. Sellers enter the market and auction price back into value area. Also this selling occurred within yesterdays value and market closed below the days value and hence it was responsive selling. It was net selling day as TPO counts above point of control (PoC-5,415-5,420) were higher at 69 per cent. The trading pattern in the August futures below 5,360 suggests major short covering at lower levels. The August futures saw significant selling above 5,415, indicating profit-booking at

the higher level. The traders were net sellers in the range of 5,390-5,415. The initial balance (IB) range (5,405-5,440) saw change of hands and selling by top traders. The market picture chart hinted at upside resistance at 5,505, but continued volume- based selling can take the August futures below 5,300 tomorrow. Strong support is expected to come around 5,240. The immediate trend is likely to remain weak as options traders covered significant short positions in 5,300-strike put options. The trading activity in the 5,200-5,100-strike put options rose substantially as participants bought these puts to protect long positions in index futures. The Nifty is likely to stay below 5,400 in the near future and, hence, they have increased short positions in 5,400-strike call options. The buy-side volume was seen in the 5,400-strike call options which indicate hedging of short positions in August futures.

TECHNICALS
to be well placed, is going to a correction. As long as the stock trades below Rs 68, it is likely to test Rs 55 on the downside. On the upside, if the stock rebounds above Rs 68, then it could rally up to Rs 85. Last close: Rs 532 Target: Rs 500 Ranbaxy has closed below the short- and medium-term moving average, and the weekly Stochastic Slow too has turned negative. The stock is likely to exert selling pressure as long as the stock trades Rs 545. On the downside, the stock is likely to test Rs 500-level.
Last close: 5,332 Heavy selling in the latter half of the day has brought Nifty closer to the 5,300-level. It could now be just a matter of time before it tests 5,300. If the index fails to hold on to 5,300, we could re-test the June lows of 5,200odd levels. The chances of markets falling lower seem higher, given the weak technicals. Tomorrow, the index may seek support around the 5,2905,260 levels and face resistance at 5,375-5,400.
