Jesus replied with an illustration: Jew going on a trip from Jerusalem to Jericho was attacked by
bandits. They stripped him of his clothes and money and beat him up and left him lying half dead
beside a road.
By chance the Jewish priest came along; and when he saw man lying there, he crossed to the
other side of the road and passed him by. The Jewish Temple-assistant did the same thing; he,
too, left him lying there.
But despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw him, he felt deep pity. Kneeling beside
him Samaritan soothed his wounds with medicine and bandaged them. Then he put man on his
donkey and walked along beside him till they came to a inn, where he nursed him through the
night. Next day he handed innkeeper two five pound notes and told him to take care of the man.
If his bill comes to more than that, he said, Ill pay the difference next time I am here. (Luke:
10:30-35)

An Invention for a Cold Day
It was the bitter cold day in Maine in 1873 as fifteen-year-old Chester Greenwood was trying out
the new pair of ice skates. A frigid wind was whipping across an ice and freezing his ears. He
wrapped his head in the scarf, but the scarf was uncomfortable. Besides, the wool was itchy and
the scarf kept on slipping. Chester had the idea. He would make the covering for his ears. He
bent two pieces of wire so that they would fit over his ears. Then he joined the pieces of wire so
that they would fit over his head. After he returned home, he asked his grandmother to sew
pieces of fur over an outside of the earpieces and velvet over the insides. He adjusted the wires
so that each ear was covered with a fur piece. Later, Chester used the steel band instead of wire.
A band could be adjusted so that the pieces of fur and velvet would fit over the ears.
