The Indian cheese market has been experiencing good growth since 1999, a trend that is expected to continue over the next five years. However, although the market is expected to enjoy positive growth, Datamonitor predicts that the rate of growth will slow down from 2004 onwards. The market reached a value of $65.9 million in 2003, an increase of 39.6% since 1999, having grown with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.7% in the 1999-2003 period. This growth was considerably stronger than that of the Asia Pacific market itself, leading to Indias market share increasing by 0.2 percentage points between 1999-2003, accounting for 1.6% of the Asia Pacific market by the end of this period. This share is expected to remain stagnant between 2003-2008. The leading source of revenue for the Indian cheese market in 2003 was the processed cheese sector, which accounted for 73.9% of the market value. In value terms, this sector was worth $48.7 million in 2003, an increase of 35.0% since 1999. Despite its leading position, the processed cheese sector was outperformed by the natural cheese sector, which grew by 54.3% between 1999 and 2003. The natural cheese sector generated revenues of $17.2 million in 2003, equivalent to 26.1% of the markets value.
