Oklahoma Statewide Listings

Guide to Free and Low-Cost Dental Care

A guide with a purpose
This guide is published by the Delta Dental of Oklahoma Charitable Foundation to: 1. 2. 3. Help those who cannot afford dental care find free and low-cost resources. Help referral sources assist those in need to find care. Connect free and low-cost programs to one another to leverage their limited resources and multiply their efforts and results.

A message to those in need of care

Individuals requesting this guide typically have two issues a dental problem that cannot be ignored combined with scarce financial resources. The providers listed in this directory care about you and your situation, and they do all they can (given limited resources) to meet the tremendous need for benevolent and low-cost dental services throughout Oklahoma. There are two types of clinics/programs listed free and low-cost. If you have some financial means, the nonprofit low-cost clinics provide dental services for fees which are lower on average and the waiting period for an appointment is short. Free clinics and programs provide services at no cost and are made possible by volunteer dental professionals and support staff. As you can well imagine, the demand for these services is great, but the supply of volunteers is limited. Patience and perseverance are keys to receiving care, because most have long waiting periods for restorative services (such as dentures and fillings). However, every effort is made to provide timely care to those in pain and at risk for infection. Calling more than one organization and becoming familiar with their processes will increase your likelihood for treatment. Quick resolution is uncommon in this process but given time and tenacity, you will succeed at resolving your dental issue. We sincerely hope this directory helps you find the benevolent dental care you need.

Fall 2010

NEWSLETTER

Volunteer now for OkMOM 2011!

Volunteer registration is now open for the second annual Oklahoma Mission of Mercy being held February 4-5 at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City. Organized by the Oklahoma Dental Association, the 2-day free dental clinic event is funded by a $150,000 grant from the Delta Dental of Oklahoma Charitable Foundation. At the 2010 OkMOM in Tulsa, more than 1,800 patients were served by over 1,600 dental professionals and other volunteers. This years goal is to serve 2,000 patients! Last year the volunteer roster was filled by early January, so volunteers are encouraged to register early at www.okmom.org. Help spread the word by distributing the OkMOM Patient Information Flyer located on the Foundation website at: www.DeltaDentalOK.org/foundation.

Foundations new name conveys mission

To better capture and communicate its mission, the Delta Dental of Oklahoma Charitable Foundation is changing its name to the Delta Dental of Oklahoma Oral Health Foundation. Our Charitable Foundation is totally focused on oral health, said John Gladden, president and CEO of Delta Dental. We do not provide grants for non-dental related endeavors. Expanding the Foundations name to include oral health helps potential grantees to identify our mission and clarifies to the community what we are all about. Watch for the new name and logo in the coming weeks!

Foundation honored as member of OU Seed Sower Society

The Delta Dental of Oklahoma Charitable Foundation has been named as a member of the University of Oklahomas Seed Sower Society, which honors donors whose gifts to OU total $1 million or more. The Foundation was recognized for contributing more than $1 million to the OU College of Dentistry since 2001. We are deeply grateful for Delta Dentals exceptional support of the OU College of Dentistry, including generous scholarships for deserving dental students, key contributions for new software to assist the college with upgrading its clinic management systems, vital funds to help offset the cost of providing quality dental care to patients with little or no income, and funding for satellite learning centers for dental hygienists around the state, said OU President David Boren. Delta Dental of Oklahoma president and CEO, John Gladden, and Dr. Michael McLeod, Foundation Chairman, accepted the honor from the Dean of the College of Dentistry, Dr. Stephen Young, during the OU Deans Circle Dinner held at the Governors mansion. In his acceptance speech Gladden emphasized the importance of dental professional volunteerism. Without volunteer dental professionals you only have half the equation: the money half. With them you multiply the force of the money by 10 a powerful impact, Gladden said. The OU College of Dentistry is producing more than just dentists here. You are producing dental professionals with heart and a spirit of community and volunteerism like few other professions.

DDOK Honored by Beacon Awards

Delta Dental of Oklahoma has been honored as the winner of the 2010 Journal Record Beacon Award in the Small Business Category. The awards program, now in its third year, recognizes businesses and organizations Lighting the Way in Oklahoma by giving back to the communities that support them. Delta Dental was recognized for contributing more than $1.4 million to its Foundation in 2009 for the support of dental health and education related programs statewide. While we appreciate the honor, we salute the tireless volunteers and dental professionals on the front lines who provide free and low-cost dental care to thousands of Oklahomans who need it most. Its our privilege to partner with you!

Oklahoma Mission of Mercy (OkMOM) PATIENTS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What age groups will be treated? All ages will be seen. However, dentures will not be available. If I am under 18, do I need a parent or guardian present? Yes. Is there anything which would disqualify me from treatment? Each patient will undergo a simple medical exam at the start of your OkMOM experience. Some things that could prevent you from being treated include: having a fever at the time of treatment; uncontrollable, abnormally high blood pressure; or excessive bleeding in the past. Can I pre-register/set an appointment? No. All OkMOM services are offered on a first-come, firstserved basis. No pre-registration is allowed or required. How do I qualify? There are no qualification criteria. The first 1,000 people (approx.) will be served. How early should I arrive at OkMOM? The doors will open at 5AM. From our previous experience we expect people to begin lining up much earlier than 5AM. Please keep the following in mind: Patients will not be allowed in the building before 5AM. No exceptions will be made. If you decide to stand in line, it will be very cold outside. DRESS APPROPRIATELY. Collapsible chairs, blankets, and sleeping bags will be allowed. However, you will not have a chance to return them to your car and will need to carry them with you throughout the day. Tents will not be allowed. No exceptions. Security and portable toilets will be available. OkMOM is not responsible for lost or stolen items. What time will the clinic doors close? We will treat approximately 1,000 patients per day. Once 1,000 people enter, we will close the doors to any new patients for that day. Do I need insurance/payment? No. This is a completely free event. Because of the generosity of our volunteer dental professionals, we will not be filing insurance or charging patients for services performed. Can someone come with me while I am being treated? You are welcome to bring a friend or family member with you to OkMOM. They can stay with you while you are outside in line but we will require them to go the family/friends waiting area as soon as you enter the building. You will be able to meet them once you are finished with treatment. My entire family needs to be seen. Is that possible? Yes. However, we will only allow one parent/ guardian to go with children under 18 into the treatment area. Will breakfast/lunch be provided? Yes. We will serve free breakfast and lunch to all patients inside the clinic. Food and drinks will not be allowed on the clinic floor. Will there be translators? Spanish and Vietnamese translators; signers for the hearing impaired. Is there a limit as to how much treatment I can receive? Due to limited supplies, time and volunteers, we are limited to the amount of treatment we can provide each individual. Our first priority will be to treat your critical dental needs. When you enter our clinic, one of our volunteer dentists will meet with you and determine your treatment plan. (Dentures/partials are not available.) What should I bring to OkMOM? We recommend the following: List of current medications; one day supply of medications; baby supplies for a full day (diapers, formula, etc.). Bring these items with you in line; do not leave them in your car. Once your enter the building, you cannot leave to go to your car. Where do I park? Patients receiving treatment will be given a parking voucher AFTER treatment for the Santa Fe Parking Garage and the Century Center Parking Garage ONLY. Parking is on a first-come, first-served basis. If you do not receive treatment (or if you park in a parking garage other than Santa Fe or Century) you must pay for parking. Be sure to obey all posted signs to avoid fines or impoundment.
