District Manager, Northeast U.S. (1999-2011) Initially challenged to direct performance of six stores on Long Island, extendi ng scope to encompass as many as 16 stores in the New York metro area. Last dis trict included four high-profile flagship stores in Manhattan, with a total annu al sales volume of approximately $65M and a workforce of 400+ employees. S ucceeded the original GM nine months after store opening and was immediately fac ed with the challenge of managing one of only three Borders locations to be succ essfully organized by the UFCW and participated in contract negotiations as the operational consultant for the company's negotiating team. Challenges: Helped lead one of the most successful store launches in company his tory, capturing revenues of $11M within its first full year of operation, a full 22% above forecast. Recognized quickly the need to add new staff in order to ha ndle the record traffic, expediting the hiring and onboarding of 30+ new employe es by Week 10 after opening. Praised by superiors for meeting or exceeding sales plan, customer service goals, and budget performance (i.e., payroll, shrink, et c.) despite the difficult circumstances that followed during the first two years of operations. Key Achievements & Contributions: *Designed operating infrastructure where none existed, including clear processes and procedures guiding all facets of daily operations (i.e., opening/closing, p rocessing inventory, visual presentation, floor management, etc.). *Enhanced store-employee relations with tools and venues to facilitate communica tions, including regularly scheduled meetings that involved staff in critical id ea sharing and decision making. *Transformed a very contentious, divisive environment into one in which the staf f felt motivated, empowered, appreciated, and respected. As a consequence, union was de-authorized by the bargaining unit in 1999. Led a campaign on Borders' be half to thwart the union's efforts to organize another location. *Strengthened support to the sales floor by developing the floor management posi tion to serve as the bridge between frontline staff and store management to addr ess escalated issues and concerns. *Weathered declining revenues and other issues negatively impacting store operat ions and turned around performance. Re-engaged the staff, ignited sales, raised store standards, and drove overall improvement, achieving positive comp by end o f Year 3.

WALDENBOOKS - Kansas City, MO / New York, NY - 1986-1996 Progressed through increasingly responsible positions culminating in store manag ement roles for the Kmart-owned Waldenbooks, which, at the time, operated 1000 u nits in the U.S. After Kmart's acquisition of Borders, merger of the two compani es (Borders-Walden Group), and subsequent spin-off-all taking place in 1992-the company was renamed Borders Group and, later, rebranded as Borders. Store Manager, New York City | Staten Island | Kansas City Held full P&L and budget responsibility for three distinctly unique retail busin ess units producing annual revenues ranging from $600K to $5M. Directed strategi c planning, sales forecasting, and merchandising, as well as hiring, training, s cheduling, and performance of 20+ full- and part-time/seasonal staff. Challenges: Tasked with managing the company's flagship store in New York City, a 10,000-sq. ft. store embedded in the heart of Lower Manhattan. Responsible for supporting an operation more than 3x the size of an average Waldenbooks, hosted major author readings and signings, met regularly with publisher reps to augmen t and support broad title selection. Built a strong and vibrant corporate sales program, which eventually achieved $1M in annual sales.
