DREHMO Ex-proof actuators

Oil & Gas

Wherever material flows through pipelines in liquid, gas or powder form, several kinds of valves are used to shut off or to regulate the rate of flow or pressure. For reliable remote operation of these valves, whether they be globe, gate, ball or butterfly valves or dampers, DREHMO electromechanical actuators have been employed successfully the world over for several decades. DREHMO actuators are used in oil and gas fields, pipelines, tankfarms, oil and gas terminals, power generation, chemical and petrochemical process industries as well as in water works and waste water treatment plants. Actuators have to move the valve to a mechanically definded final position or to intermediate positions, avoiding excessive torque during actuator travel and in the final positions so as not to overload the valve.

DREHMO Ex-proof actuators

Special devices therefore ensure that the actuator motor is switched off when it reaches a certain position, angle of rotation or torque. Special variants include part-turn actuators for 90 or 120 angles of rotation and thrust actuators, which transform the torque into an axial thrust by means of a thrust unit. In plant areas in which explosive gases may be present, actuators must have type-tested and certified explosion protection. The variety of torques and actuator speeds required in practice is met by a wide range of DREHMO actuators. DREHMO actuators can be fitted with torque and position sensor and signal processing systems to suit the various remote control requirements. The following product lines are available: DREHMO Compact DREHMO Standard actuators with limit and torque switches DREHMO i-matic actuators with smart integral control unit and non-intrusive setting as well as preventive maintenance features.

DREHMO Ex-proof actuators Basic principles and measures

Explosion An explosion is a sudden oxidation or disintegration reaction with a very high reaction rate which generates an increase in temperature or pressure, or both at the same time. The most common are reactions of combustible gases, vapours or dusts with the oxygen in the air. Conditions for an explosion For explosions to occur in atmospheric air, three factors need to come together: combustible material oxygen (air) ignition source In production plants and places of work, hazardous areas for explosions can form when the first two prerequisites for an explosion are fulfilled. Typical hazardous areas occur in chemical factories, refineries, paint factories, paint shops, purification plants, mills and stores for milled products and other combustible dusts, in tanking and loading plants for combustible gases, liquids and solid matter and in the mining industry. The first two components - combustible material and air - must be present in sufficient quantities for a potentially explosive atmosphere to form. The oxidation reactions are mostly linked to warming and pressure increase, thereby fulfilling the criteria for an explosion. Protection principles These are principles that eliminate systems, devices and components as ignition sources. Ignition sources that originate from friction and impact sparks and electrostatic charges are to be eliminated on explosionprotected equipment through the selection of suitable materials and through design measures. This is proven and confirmed by corresponding tests. Four protection principles can eliminate equipment as an ignition source. One fundamental prerequisite for all protection principles is that the parts in direct contact with the potentially explosive atmosphere must be unable to achieve an inadmissible temperature in view of the ignition temperature of the materials present at the place of use. The ignition temperature is therefore significant for all protection principles. Protection principles can be applied equally to electrical and non-electrical devices and to gases and dusts. The principles permit designs in various safety categories in accordance with the Explosion Protection Directive 94/9/EG: Category 1 - with highest protection level and therefore with a very high degree of safety Category 2 - with a high protection level and therefore with a high degree of safety and Category 3 - with a normal protection level and therefore with a normal degree of safety. DREHMO actuators fulfill the requirements of category 2. Construction regulations for explosionprotected systems, devices and components - equipment Dangers that occur when working with combustible gases, vapours and dusts are based on consistent chemical and physical processes. These dangers can therefore only be tackled in a consistent manner. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the European Committees for Standardization (CENELEC and CEN), the German Commission for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies of DIN and VDE (DKE) and DIN now issue almost fully consistent requirements. Their observance is required of manufacturers and operators and, in the event of increased protection requirements, monitored by recognized testing offices and authorities. Manufacturers of explosion protected systems, devices and components, builders and operators of plants work together to ensure that the prerequisites for the safe operation of plants in potentially explosive areas are met. Significance and advantages of division into zones The division of potentially explosive areas into zones has proved successful. This division takes into account the different dangers posed by potentially explosive atmospheres and makes it possible to provide explosion protection that corresponds to circumstances both from a safety point of view and in terms of costeffectiveness. The definition of the zones is consistently regulated for the European Union in Directive 1999/92/EG. It must be expertly applied to the actual conditions. IEC 60079-10 assumes an almost identical division for gases and vapours, which also applies to future plants in line with USA Standard NEC 505. IEC 61241-10 supports zone division for dusts. Potentially explosive areas are divided into zones according to the frequency and duration at which potentially explosive atmospheres occur. This division gives the scope of the measures that need to be taken in accordance with Appendix II Section A of Directive 1999/92/EG in connection with Appendix I of Directive 94/9/EG.

Potentially explosive areas Zone 0: Area in which a potentially explosive atmosphere of air mixed with combustible gases, vapours or mists is present either permanently, often or for long periods of time. Zone 1: Area in which a potentially explosive atmosphere of air mixed with combustible gases, vapours or mists can occasionally form under normal operation. Zone 2: Area in which a potentially explosive atmosphere of air mixed with combustible gases, vapours or mists is not expected under normal operation. This can still occur but is rare and only exists for a short time period.

DREHMO Ex-proof actuators Brief description

Multi-turn actuators for on-off duty Part-turn actuators for on-off duty Thrust actuators for on-off duty

The design principle of multi-turn actuators is to turn a multiple of 360 degrees at the output drive. They are designed to operate valves with 2 up to 1450 revolutions per stroke. Multi-turn actuators are fitted mainly to gate and globe valves which transform the multiple rotation of the actuators output drive into linear movement via a threaded stem. Multi-turn actuators for on-off duty (short time duty S2) mostly operate shut-off valves with only a few open-close cycles per month. Flanges and output drive designs of the multi-turn actuators are standardized in accordance with DIN EN ISO 5210 or DIN 3210 respectively and therefore fit on any modern valve design. Furthermore a multitude of special flange designs is available. The multi-turn actuators are classified in three housing sizes according to their rated torque: up to 60 Nm: actuator size D 30, 59 60 Nm - 250 Nm: actuator size D 60, 120, 249 250 Nm - 1000 Nm: actuator size D 250, 500, 1000 Torque values exceeding 1000 Nm are realized by additional spur or bevel gearboxes.

Part-turn actuators are a special type of multi-turn actuator for operating butterfly or ball valves, for instance, with an output drive movement of less than 360. Normally, the internal gear of the part-turn actuator is designed for travel of 90; special ranges, such as 120 or 180 are also available. The internal mechanical design of the partturn actuators DP30 ...119 differs from that of the multi-turn actuator, in that there is an additional second eccentric planetary gearing stage to adapt the actuator to the demands of the 90 movement. From actuator size DP 319 onward, a multiturn actuator is combined with an additional gear box. All the advantages of the planetary gear of the multi-turn actuators, such as handwheel operation without changeover, self-locking gear, long service life, lifetime lubrication, as well as the features already described, are likewise applicable to the part-turn actuators. The flange dimensions and the different output drives, such as plug bush with bore and groove, square bore and dihedron, all correspond to the usual standards, e.g. DIN EN ISO 5211. This means that direct mounting on the valve is possible. Accessories such as foot and lever with ball joints make indirect operation of butterfly valves possible depending on the structural and design conditions of the valves. Torque values exceeding 1600 Nm are realized by multi-turn actuators with additional worm gear boxes.

DREHMO thrust actuators can be fitted to valves which require a linear movement. The thrust actuator transforms the torque of a DREHMO actuator into an axial thrust by means of an integrated thrust unit. The required actuating force (thrust or traction) can be adjusted continuously and reproducibly. Thrust actuators are mainly used to operate globe valves. Thrust units fitted to the driving flange of a multi-turn actuator consist mainly of a trapezoid threaded stem, a metric screw bolt to join the valve shaft and an enclosure to protect the stem from environmental influences. The version described is used for direct mounting of the actuator to the valve. However, fork joint versions of the thrust actuators (indirect mounting) primarily operate butterfly valves for which direct mounting of a 90 part turn actuator is not possible or efficient for design reasons. Cardanic suspension of the thrust unit at the fork joint is also available.

DREHMO Ex-proof actuators Brief description

Multi-turn actuators for modulating duty Part-turn actuators for modulating duty Thrust actuators for modulating duty

The demands of modulating duty on the actuators and valves are very different to those placed by on-off duty. The most important requirements are: high switching frequency longer service life of all components less heating of the motor less backlash of gearing minimal hysteresis during reverse operation minimal delay time Modulating actuators are designed for S4 operation, what means: Intermittent service influenced by the heating of the motor during start-up. Duty cycles up to 35 % and cycle rates of up to 1200 c/h can be achieved at ambient temperatures up to a maximum of +60 C. All modulating actuators are based on the multi-turn actuators in the sizes DR30...1000. Long service life, snug fitting gear components and minimum delay times result from the solid gear design.

Modulating part-turn actuators of types D...R + MSG-R for operating modulating valves consist of a combination of a modulating multi-turn actuator designed for modulating duty and a high-grade modulating worm gear. Meticulously selected matings of materials for the power transmitting components of the worm gear take into consideration the high demands of modulating duty. The modulating worm gears are flange-fitted to the output drive of the modulating multi-turn actuator. The consistent observance of this modular design principle offers a highly economical solution for realizing practically all relevant output drive torques and valve operating times. The mechanical coupling of the gear output and the modulating part-turn actuator is achieved using the standard flanges and output drive designs in accordance with DIN EN ISO 5211. As with the part-turn actuators for on-off duty, accessories such as foot and lever are also available for indirect mounting on the output side of the modulating worm gear. A separate detailed selection list can be requested for modulating part-turn combinations over 3000 Nm.

The thrust units of the modulating thrust actuators of type actuator D...R + DSE also comply with the requirements for modulating operation. High-quality mating of materials and close fitting components are also used here. The thrust units are operated by modulating multi-turn actuators. A separate detailed selection list can be requested for modulating thrust drives over 80 kN.

DREHMO Ex-proof actuators Gear principle and function

The DREHMO actuators basically consist of motor, planetary gear arranged with torquebearing displacement worm, handwheel and integral switching device. All parts of the planetary gear are arranged around the hollow shaft. As several teeth always mesh simultaneously with this planetary gear (unlike normal worm gears), it is possible to realize a very compact gear with a long service life. Method of functioning for motorized operation The motor (1) drives the eccentric (3) via the spur gear (2). The planet wheel (4), which meshes into the inner gear of the sun wheel (11), is pivoted on the eccentric (3). As the two wheels have a different number of teeth, a relative speed is generated which is transferred by driver pins (12) to the driver plate (5), which is mounted on the planet wheel (4). The driver plate (5) is interlocked with the hollow shaft (10) via serration. Method of functioning for manual operation Changeover from motorized to manual operation is not necessary. During manual operation via the handwheel, the forces are transmitted via the worm (9), the sun wheel (11) and the planet wheel (4) to the driver plate (5) and then to the output drive. Torque-dependent tripping In addition to the inner gear tooth system, the sun wheel (11) also has an outer gear tooth system which meshes with the axial displacement worm (9). The displacement worm (9) is held in its central position by pretensioned torque springs (7). If a higher torque is exerted on the actuator than the torque created by the pretensioned springs, the peripheral force on the sun wheel (11) moves the displacement worm (9) from its central position and actuates the torque lever (8). On the torque lever (8), the torque switches are activated via the trip cam. 1

DREHMO Ex-proof actuators Standard actuators

Torque switches The task of the torque switches is to switch off the DREHMO actuator if a preset torque is exceeded so that a valve with a defined closing pressure is moved into position. In the case of travel-dependent switch-off, the torque switches serve as an additional safety switch to protect the valve from mechanical overload. Limit switch via counter gear The counter gear consists of 2 roller units that work independently of one another. Each unit is fitted with a microswitch which is assigned to a certain direction of rotation (clockwise or anticlockwise rotation). Limit switch via camshaft gear Another 4 limit switches are possible in combination with a cam switch unit and reduction gear. These switches can also perform switching functions for both intermediate and limit positions. Mechanical position indicator The mechanical position indicator continuously shows the valve position on the device. Blinker switch The blinker switch is a microswitch that indicates the movement of the DREHMO actuator. The signal it issues can be processed as a running message in the control unit. Heater Heating is provided to prevent condensation from forming in the switch housing of the DREHMO actuator. Potentiometer for remote continuous position indication Current position transmitter These devices are used for the electrical remote indication of the actuator position. Their function is to convert the current position of the actuator to an electrical signal. This signal is either shown on a display tool or passed on to a control electronics system for further processing. Reduction gear The following accessories require a gear that reduces the entire actuator travel of the valve to an angle of rotation 290: Limit switch in combination with camshaft gear, mechanical position indication, potentiometer for remote continuous position indication and current position transmitter.

Electronic position transducer

Application The EM 5.005 electronic measuring amplifier converts with the aid of a precision potentiometer travel or angle of rotation linearly into an impressed DC signal. Thus the positions reached by DREHMOActuators can be displayed directly, even over long lines, as an appropriate current value on an indicating instrument. Additionally, they can be evaluated by a computer. Versions When using the explosion-proof version (type EM 5.005) of the electronic position transducer, the valid standards for the installation of intrinsically safe circuits must be followed (EN 60079-14ff/VDE 0165).

DREHMO Ex-proof actuators Functionalities in detail for i-matic actuators

Combi sensor An electronic position sensor is used for continuous position detection, including the detection of intermediate positions. Interacting with the i-matic control unit, the sensor switches off the actuator when it reaches limit positions that have been electronically programmed and are nonerasable. At the same time the sensor can supply isolated limit position signals and an analogue 4-20 mA position signal. A second measuring input is used to make an analogue recording of the torque reached, which is then compared and evaluated with settable switch-off values in the control unit. Analogue measurement, signalling and evaluation of the torque is possible while the actuator is running. Phase sequence correction / Single-phase monitoring This module ensures that the actuator produces the correct direction of rotation for opening and closing the valve, regardless of the sequence in which the three-phase network phases are applied. Whether the closing direction is to the right or left is defined by remote or local parameterization. Valves / Position and torque characteristic curve The actuator comprises a function for recording the torque characteristic curve. The characteristic curves for plant commissioning on the valve and for cold and warm plant commissioning are permanently stored in the actuator. Either the central visualizing tool or the onsite laptop is used to display the curves. Characteristic curves stored here can be edited for a needs-oriented maintenance of valves. Signal memory In case of loss of main power supply feedback signals can remain at the current status with the following options: 24 V DC external supply of control voltage or battery pack (automatic rechargeable) or remanence relays

The i-matic series is fitted with position and torque sensors which are accommodated in a pressure-proof control unit housing (Ex d) together with the control unit and the local control station with LC display. Self-monitoring A self-monitoring process runs continuously in the actuator. To simplify troubleshooting, the process distinguishes between the following messages: Hardware fault Sensor fault Electronics fault Software fault Electronics temperature exceeded Motor temperature exceeded All malfunctions that occur are recorded chronologically in an error log. Commissioning / Non-intrusive calibration The local control station consists of an LC display, 4 buttons and an IR interface or Bluetooth interface as an option. The actuator can be set and parameterized locally via the pushbuttons without having to open the control system. Thanks to a clearly structured menu navigation, the setting values can be easily aligned to the valve. Furthermore, all parameters of the actuator can be set easily. To prevent operating errors and manipulation, access to the commissioning mode can be protected with a password. Fail-safe Should the external reference signal fail or the bus communication break-down, a user-definable fail-safe position can be set in line with process requirements or, if the parameter Fail as is is selected, the actuator can be arrested in the current position.

Remote parameterization While the plant is in operation, all settings can be remotely parameterized and permanently overwritten via the bus using the central parameterization and visualizing tool. The original setting can be retrieved with a reset command. Positioner You can use Modulating actuators are directly controlled i-matic-Explorer by a primary process controller (e.g. pressure, SiMATIC PDM temperature, flow rate) via a 4-20 mA FDT / DTM setpoint value. The integral positioner as a visualization software. compares the reference signal (setpoint value) with the analogue position signal Data memory generated by the actuator (actual value) Actuator-specific data is recorded in a nonand corrects the resulting difference. The volatile memory. Such data include electronic Xp parameter can be adjusted over a range name-plate, operating cycles, running of 0.5 %5 % to set the sensitivity of the times, error memory (dynamic maintenance actuator, optimally adjusting the modulating information) and data required for preventive actuator to the control process. maintenance. Power controller Electrically and mechanically interlocked contactor-type reversers are employed. For modulating control solid state relays are available as an option. Timer The timer can extend the actuating time over the entire stroke or over a userdefinable partial section up to the limit position. The timer operation in opening or closing direction can be configured by parameters. A further parameter determines whether the range for timer operation is specified using an internal setting or using an optional binary input on the interface for remote commands. Three values are applied for parameterizing the timer operation. - Pulse time ton (0.5 s to 30 s) - Pulse time toff (0.5 s to 30 s) - Start of timer (0 % to 100 % actuator travel) IR / Bluethooth interface In addition to the field bus interface, each i-matic actuator is equipped with an infrared port for connecting an on-site PC. In this way all data (diagnostic files) can be read out, parameters can be set, plus firmware can be downloaded. With our i-maticExplorer software tool, operating and setting tasks are made easy. For wireless communication a Bluethooth interface is available as an option.

Display and push buttons The local control station with graphic LC display (illuminated background) and multifunctional pushbuttons offer users a whole range of new options. The complete local control can be padlocked and secured with stainless steel cover against vandalism. Local control (local operation, parameterization, diagnosys) is carried out by push buttons and graphic LC-display. As an option, operation via magnetic pen is available.

IR-Interface / Bluetooth By means of an infrared interface, data can be transferred and read out by an external computer. Alternatively the data exchange can be handled by an external Bluetooth device, e. g. PDA, via a class II Bluetooth interface.

DREHMO Ex-proof actuators Control interfaces

Analogue/digital I/O
The connection of the i-matic by means of analogue and digital inputs and outputs takes place via the relay interface. The various assemblies, which are equipped differently depending on the variant, are operated directly by the central microcontroller (C). The command inputs and signal outputs are not only insulated against electrical potential, but are also bundled together to form smaller groups. The functions of the six command inputs and up to a maximum of eleven signal outputs can be allocated to the available channels as you wish. With the command inputs it is also possible to set the active level as voltage present (high active) or as voltage not present (low active). The physically available normally open contacts of the signal outputs can be configured via the software as normally open or normally closed contacts - signal output Out 7 consists of a single-throw contact.

Profibus DP (V1 / V2) single-channel / redundant

The connection of the i-matic by means of a profibus channel takes place via the single-channel profibus interface board. The ASIC that controls the profibus communication is connected directly to the central microcontroller (C). The central C supplies the ASIC with the required data, such as the bus address. The bus address can be set anywhere between 2...126 using the software. The transfer of the data to the profibus takes place via an electrically isolated RS-485 interface. The line redundant board is based on the single-channel board, but is extended by a second channel and an automatic selection logic. The actuator can be equipped with four digital inputs for 24 V DC and two analogue inputs for 4...20 mA. The conditions of these additional inputs are sent to the master station via the profibus protocol. In case of slave redundancy each profibus channel has its own ASIC, which is connected directly to the central C. The central C supplies the ASICs with the required data, such as the bus addresses, which can be set to different values anywhere between 2...126 for both channels. This means that independent communication is possible with 2 masters that send simultaneously. There is also the option of implementing the acyclic services of the DPV1 profibus to enable parameterization of the device and read-out of the memory for data acquisition, diagnosis information an documentation data via the fieldbus. DPV2 functions such as clock synchronisation and time stamps for events are integrated in the V2 Profibus extension. Profisafe: Safety communication acc. to IEC 61784-3-3 is supported by means of a certified Profisafe implementation.

Profibus with optical fibers
For plant installations with long cables and with high risks of EMC or lightning strike, profibus interfacing does not take place via twowire copper cables; instead, the participants are connected via optical fibres. For this purpose, a converter from copper RS485 technology to light signals (optical fibre coupler) is used both on the master and on the field devices. The following wiring concepts are supported in the i-matic series: Star topology Each actuator has a transmitter and receiver cable that connects it to the inverse coupler on the master. Line topology The transmitter and receiver cables are connected through via the optical fibre couplers in the actuators. Unlike the line structure in copper technology with T-connectors, the failure of a participant in this optical fibre technology interrupts the line. None of the participants further down the line can be reached. Ring topology The transmitter and receiver lines are connected through via the optical fibre couplers of the devices and there is a pair of feedback lines to the master, forming an optical fibre ring. Even if one of the participants fails or there is a line break, the rest of the participants can still be reached, as transmitting and receiving is possible in both directions.

Modbus RTU interface

The actuator can be controlled by Modbus RTU technology with an appropriate optional PCB-board. Two independent 2-wire RS485 channels are available on this board, each of them electrically isolated from the attached control logic. A dual channel UART connects the physical interface with the central microcontroller. The Modbus RTU communication protocol allows bitwise - single and multiple - and wordwise access to the linear mapped actuator input and output data by means of various function codes. If the actuator is equipped with the optional process inputs (digital and analogue), these values are available in the accessible actuator data mapping.
